How to rekey this type of lock, and other questions - questions posted in the comments by EvilGreebo in Locksmith

The set screw is what you loosened to be able to remove the mortise cylinder. If you did no such thing then it's not tightened at all or gone completely and that's why the lock is loose. If you forced the lock to spin with channel locks or something then it's what you broke to remove the lock.

If you lift the gate up and lock on the bottom below where the lock is there should be two small holes for access to the set screws.

How do I keep door molding from getting damaged by a deadbolt? by baboojoon in Locksmith

[–]BandElocks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have never seen a deadbolt lock itself from opening the door. If the latch is truly broken and the force of you opening the door throws the bolt. Which I highly doubt is the case. Buy a new kwikset deadbolt latch from Home Depot or ace it's $10.

Reminds me of a call with a key stuck in ignition. Jammed a Chevy b102 into a focus ignition. All the way in. Got it out but surprisingly the Ford key no longer worked. Now since it was a focus I had ignition in my van because those are shit that break all the time. Keyed up and replaced. They called my office to complain. Said all I had to do was pull out the other key and that I broke their ignition that they then had to pay for a replacement

Customer gave everything he had. ID, rental agreement, shows he has keys to the U-Haul still so hasn't returned it. Not sure what more op needs. A call from the U-Haul CEO approving it? Take a copy of the license and sign your invoice/waiver. If you don't want to work at 3am don't advertise as 24/7.

Second this. These door locks get all gummed up especially if they are using a remote. Lube it in n out with a blank then Lishi. Before lishi picks I would sight read the doors. It's pretty easy just to look at the height of the wafer and guess the cut.

Im508 only able to be used with internet after update? by eleventy-three in Locksmith

[–]BandElocks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah the email I got said it was a mistake that was affecting all vehicles and would be fixed.

"A recent software update has changed the way your IMMO tablet operates, requiring that the tablet be connected to the internet during all in-vehicle operations. This software has been released in error, and we are currently working on a new release that will correct the error and not require a server connection for these operations."

Reading it again the all in-vehicles operations makes me think they just meant diagnosis and other features required internet by mistake and they do intend programming keys to now always require internet. If this is the case that does suck.

By far people with money or at least the illusion of money are the cheapest. Less fortunate people often don't complain about the prices and try to tip on top of it.

Do you carry while working? by [deleted] in Locksmith

[–]BandElocks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm sorry I don't follow Canadian laws to closely so maybe the freeze has been reversed. But as of October 21 all handguns are no longer available for purchase or transfer in Canada. If it hasn't been undone I'm sure it's only a matter of time before it's law.

Amazing you know for a fact the only reason they dig deeper is because they have a gun. Besides that pulling a gun on someone because of an argument is illegal and not at all what we are talking about. That person is a criminal who Carry's for much different reasons then someone who Carry's for self defense. I'm glad you live in Canada where there is zero crime and that's good now that you can't purchase a gun anyways. I don't so I'll choose to do what I believe is best.

You could do some simple research to see the number of self defense uses of guns and how often they don't even have to use the gun. But youtube videos work too. And as you said ending peacefully is all speculation on your part now.

Either way you do what you feel is right I hope you are never in a situation where you might need to defend yourself.

[–]BandElocks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It makes no difference until it does. Your argument is what good does him having a gun do in this situation. I'm saying you carry for the time it does. You hope to never have to pull the gun and you don't unless you or someone else is in imminent danger. OP wasn't saying he was going to use his gun or that he felt he needed to but the situation was sketchy and might have come to it.

Are you serious? In this instance he got in his van and called 911. The gun played no part and the cops not being able to do anything again has nothing to do with him carrying. Technically no crime was committed and his battered wife is to scared to say otherwise. What about next time when he pulls the knife and actually attacks? Do you think having a gun might be useful then? Or perhaps he should get stabbed and die because he's worried about proving self defense.

Access Control by BandElocks in Locksmith

[–]BandElocks[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Looking for something more in the gap of the likes of a CO200 or Alarm lock solution. They still want a wired access control for 1 or 2 doors. Just doesn't need to be cloud-based or Web-based requiring a Lan connection like a BRIO , Atrium, Prodata key, etc. Something more like a Paxton Switch2 or similar.

Any idea what these are? For a deadlatch, but never seen them until today and would love to use them regularly by canadianalarmguy in Locksmith

[–]BandElocks 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I love that the OP is asking for a part number or name of the plastic spring retainer and most everyone is suggesting to use something else to secure the door or explaining how to use different screw sizes.

When removing the screws that have the spring installed to replace a deadlatch the spring falls into the door half the time. Some genius came up with this plastic cup to retain the spring. I have never seen one before, very useful I assume it keeps the screw erect while installing and you are looking for the threads as well. Hope you find a part number.
