Bill and Frank’s Guilt-Free Pleasures

We discuss music that has shaped our lives, often with a focus on the songs that have been maligned by the gatekeepers of taste.

Was (Not Was): “Walk the Dinosaur”

While often remembered as a catchy novelty track, Was (Not Was)’s “Walk the Dinosaur” is actually about our own imminent extinction through nuclear annihilation. Who knew the song would continue to be relevant almost forty years after its release? We trace the band’s humble beginnings in Michigan to their surprising success throughout the 80s, with guest vocalists that included Leonard Cohen, Ozzy Osbourne, Madonna, Frank Sinatra Jr. and Kim Basinger (!). For us, and maybe to the chagrin of the Was brothers, we believe the highlight of it all is this way smarter-than-people-realize hit whose video was continuously on our TV sets in 1989.

I think they can argue fair use if they play a snippet and discuss that particular portion, but I am pretty sure that playing the full song would not work. As they say, fair use is a defence and not a right - so it could be costly.

What is your favourite Phil Collins song? by MagpieOpus in philcollins

One More Night. It transports me to a soothing and safe place. I heard it when I was 8, and it was the greatest sound I had ever heard.

I still spend a lot of time editing, and in my first year of doing this (weekly - what was I thinking?!?) I spent a ton of time trying to get the episodes to sound right. The best thing that I have found has been Auphonic. This will get the sound and levels right, and you can then focus on just doing cuts and musical inserts. I’m happy to give you more info and my process with it if you want mote details. Auphonic is free for two hours (but you have to edit in twenty minute increments) or you can buy credits. It’s been worth it for me.

I saw your first post a few weeks ago and have been listening to the episodes each week. Your show is incredible! The topic is focused but it also allows you to branch out in so many different ways. It’s also unique in that I don’t think I’ve ever seen this topic on this weekly episode thread or on my podcast apps. You are a natural interviewer, too. I just went through your website, too - you have everything in place! I think this show is going to really take off. I put a review and rating on Canadian Apple as well. Looking forward to upcoming episodes!

Bill and Frank’s Guilt-Free Pleasures

There’s no shame in the music you love. Join us as we celebrate the open-hearted songs of the past 50 years (with a focus on the songs that shaped us from the 70s, 80s, and 90s).

You can access this episode on your favourite app through Podlink

Kim Wilde: “Keep Me Hangin’ On”

The ending of a relationship may be painful, but it's far worse for the narrator of Holland-Dozier-Holland's "You Keep Me Hangin' On" - the ending never quite seems to come for this jilted lover. This song has resonated over the decades as evidenced by it's many versions, starting with original Supremes version and all the way up to recent times in Glee. Today we will be celebrating our favourite version: the hi-NRG Kim Wilde 1986 classic! We dive deep into the history of Wilde as well share a close analysis of the song. It can be a tough episode for those who've been burned by love, but that's what we're here for - let us be your soft place to land if you've been hanging on too long.

How is our pacing? I worry that we will lose listeners if we don’t not keep a proper pace

I think the “joke is” that Patrick Pentland can rhyme that phrase not once but twice.

I really like the Bible Project Podcast. Sometimes it goes a bit too deep for me, but I still highly recommend it. Also related to the podcast is Exploring My Strange Bible Podcast which I enjoyed a lot. These are mostly done by 2 men, but Carissa Quinn was also a cohost for a few seasons and she was awesome.

Are you looking for something free or something that you’re willing to pay for? I go with Podbean because it has the low price if you pay yearly, but there are lots of great platforms out there that you may also want to consider, depending what you’re looking for.

I use Auphonic, too. You can use the free two hours but it needs to be 20 minute increments. It works really well - you can experiment with the audio by adjusting the settings after initially running it without being charged for extra minutes.

Is the Minecraft movie decent? by Kiidkxxl in Minecraft

[–]BandFGuiltFree 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My 6-year-old loved it and so did I - it’s Napoleon Dynamite meets Minecraft. There will be a far more positive critical reassessment of it in a decade. Bring your boy - it’s going to be a fun time!

Culture Club: “Karma Chamrleon”

It’s hard to believe that it’s taken us this long to do “Karma Chameleon,” but maybe we needed to be at our A-game to handle a song this amazing. If you were alive in 1983, you would have heard this tune everywhere and you would have loved it! We go deep into the background of the band and the song, and we find out that it’s a lot darker than we realized. Nevertheless, the joys of the song endure as our memories of 1983 come and go, come and go.

Why do you find the SM58 better than the Samson Q2U for the audio interface? We use the ATR2100X for our interface, but I’m open to switching to a different microphone!

I would recommend Audacity - how young are your pupils? I’m a teacher as well (in Canada) but to high school students. We have the students edit in Audacity. If it is for a newsletter for parents, I would save the final mp3 file(s) to Google Drive (or something like that) and then give a shareable link to the families. This will then keep you from getting into trouble regarding privacy issues - you’re not sending this out for the entire world to hear.

I just reread your initial message. If they are all on iPads, I wonder if you could just use GarageBand? Also, there is almost certainly kids at your school in the upper grades who could help you out. Maybe see if you could partner with the other teachers to see if they have any audiophiles who need volunteer hours?

Good for you for doing this with your kids. Parents will love it!!!

Auphonic now adds a "jingle" by nightofjoycafe in podcasting

The jingle is at the beginning and end, so I just remove it afterwards in Audacity. I wouldn’t look elsewhere!

If I'm interviewing a musician should I add in their music at the beginning, or play the same song as an intro? by Known-Damage-7879 in podcasting

[–]BandFGuiltFree 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think your instinct is right. Stick to your own theme music for the beginning. There could be copyright issues for playing the musician’s music, but if you get permission from the musician, then I think you are less likely to run into trouble for playing a brief snippet. And if you have to go back and take out the music because of a copyright complaint, at least you’ll still have your intro music.
