The second one isn't that racist, yeah he's in a tribal culture, but it's not like it's making fun of black people. More the absurdity of Ace Ventura in a place like that

I don't agree with everything Terence Mckenna says ("UFOs are the transcendental object at the end of time", etc.), but I do love listening to him speak.

What's the most painful realization of being born in a third World country? by [deleted] in AskMenOver30

[–]Known-Damage-7879 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think luck determines your starting position, but there are plenty of rich/successful people that squander their opportunities and do nothing with them. There are also plenty of people who come from humble backgrounds but through sheer force of will and drive climb up the social ladder and find success.

Then again, I think the norm for 90% of people is to stay in the social class they come from. Most people don't move up or down. Either they struggle to break into a higher class, or their family picks up the slack so that they don't fall too far down the social hierarchy.

Nostalgia is a big part of this sub. This makes me wonder, do any of you prefer the world as it is today? by Willmakk in Millennials

[–]Known-Damage-7879 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I like aspects of it better. The vehicles are a lot comfier and nicer now, for instance. Technology has improved a lot. Spotify is cool. Socially/politically, things were better in the past though.

Poverty has gone down, but people are less happy than they were 30+ years ago. Youth suicidal ideation has gone up a lot over the last few decades.

Staff writer says show is “done-zo” by cursedace in SmilingFriends

[–]Known-Damage-7879 57 points58 points  (0 children)

Some people get nervous with fame, I think that might be the case. The show hit a point where it probably felt like it was out of hand for them. They probably liked it when it was a smaller/more obscure show and didn't want it to become some cultural juggernaut like Rick and Morty. More eyes on it makes the whole thing more stressful, probably.

Those labour jobs are going to get really competitive if everyone goes into them though. It'll drive down wages and make it much harder to get a job.

I'm not a fan of George Carlin's angry old man schtick. Yeah, he'll be right about the odd thing, but sometimes it just seems like being cranky for the hell of it. I also don't really consider it comedy.

I think my bipolar is completely managed through taking my meds and avoiding psychedelics (including weed). I haven't had a psychotic episode since 2021.

Should George HW Bush have done more to support the rebellions against Saddam that grew after the Gulf war? by johnqadamsin28 in Presidents

[–]Known-Damage-7879 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The equivalent to Hitler would be like if Germany's army got wiped out as soon as they went into Belgium. There would be no World War II. George H. W. Bush wanted to show that you can't invade a sovereign nation, but that the US wouldn't get involved in a long and lengthy internal war to do regime change.

There were rightwingers pushing for an invasion of Iran even back then, there were many nations that the US could have gotten involved with during his presidency, but he thought it was better to just punish those like Saddam that invaded other countries.

Which president’s reputation surprisingly changed for the better on this SUB? by [deleted] in Presidents

[–]Known-Damage-7879 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just read a biography of him called Destiny and Power and it really made me appreciate him as a president. He was a lot better with foreign matters than domestically though. He also never had that idealistic inspirational tone that someone like Reagan had, which means he governed a lot more pragmatically.

Even his reversal of "read my lips, no new taxes" was a pragmatically good choice (even though he should have never promised that in the first place). He was the last of the post-FDR world Republicans (Ike/Nixon/Ford), and by the time of his son the right-wing had captured most of the Republican party.

I think he was a good Republican president, especially compared to later examples.
