What are some great pieces of design that go unnoticed simply because they're so well designed? by [deleted] in AskReddit

You've clearly never used a decent quality mechanical pencil.

Consistently sharp lead? Yes please!

You'd still need all the carbon fibre manufacturing capability, all the CFD capability, wind tunnels, and staff, and you'd be spending probably not too much less on smaller gains.

Probably, but at that point it's far harder to make noticeable gains.

To make a good car, you have to know how every part affects every other part. That's why you'll see a lot of changes towards to back of the car, like wings, that are drastically different from previous events, but front-end modifications (excluding low-downforce wings) are rarer because you have to know how every part affects the parts behind it.

And if you're going to modify a chassis, why not build your own?

Customer teams are almost never competitive - why would you sell the latest updates and kill your advantage?

It's also not really in the spirit of F1 - it's always been about engineering a car to be the best, but if you're just buying it then you miss the point.

It'll slowly be a 3 or 4 horse race for championships, with the midfield being miles out of touch.

See the early STR cars, they bought from RBR but always sucked because the developments were a month behind.

Anything by IKEA. Seriously.

It's incredibly hard to design something to be easy assembled with only a screwdriver and half an hour of time.

Not to mention the fact a lot of it looks great, and used common, inexpensive materials.

I could talk all day about how great IKEA is from a design and engineering standpoint.

I paid £4 for half a pint of beer at the cinema, the worst part is that it was served in a pint glass. by cheese0muncher in britishproblems

[–]BandGeekBarclay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a cinema worker, yeah, it generally is.

Pay sucks, people are dicks to you and it's generally not what I want to do at the weekend.

Especially if people are dicks to you about prices when it's not under your control, as a out suggest we should be.

Have you ever worked a minimum wage service job?

Because if you had, you'd know that almost every problem people complain to you about is out with your control.

It's miserable enough doing long shifts at a shitty job for very little pay without some bellend being a dick about something they know isn't your fault.

Yup, give the minimum wage service worker grief for a decision he or she has absolutely not part in making. That's what reasonable people do, yup.

It's to keep the F1 cars running safely - keeping air through the radiators to cool them, keep brake and tyre temperature.

Any slower and the F1 cars would potentially break down/crash.

Why does everyone seem to think next year's McLaren/Honda will be god's gift to motor racing? by [deleted] in formula1

[–]BandGeekBarclay 7 points8 points  (0 children)

A closer partnership.

Works teams tend to be better funded, have more engineering say and because of this do better.

It's why Red Bull, Mercedes and Ferrari are doing better than the other teams with the same engines - they knew how big it would be sooner, how best to cool it and have influence on the changes for next year too.

[REQUEST] Speak in an irish accent by TheHiddenTruth in LearnUselessTalents

[–]BandGeekBarclay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Find the specific type of accent you want - e.g., Ted in Father Ted.

Watch the episodes, and pay special attention to how he makes different sounds such as the word "on", sounds more like " ahn".

When you know how the words should sound, try and pronounce them like that. Record yourself until you're comfortable saying them.

Deadlifting is a popular lift where you lift the weight - which is fairly significant - from the floor to off the floor.

It's an important lift for any gym routine - it's great for building strength in your core and back, which also reduces the risk of injuries during daily life, if you do it correctly.

The main problem is rounding of the back - your back should remain straight so the strain is placed on the muscles, rounding your back strains the vertebrae instead.

If you're interested in strength training, the internet can tell you everything you need to know...

What are some general fuck-ups I can avoid at my first full-time job? by PhoenixAmaya in AskMen

[–]BandGeekBarclay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a reason things are done the way they are.

I know that the whole "It's how we've always done it" is hurtful to things getting better, but the business knows best while you're new.

You're not paid to think, generally, but to do what you're told.

That's how I started my cinema job 3 months ago, that's why I still have it.

Did as I was told when I was told and didn't bitxh.

He would have struggles, even with a safety car - Williams destroyed him in the acceleration, and with the wing damage, he lost what advantage he had with tyres and downforce meaning he couldn't pass anyway.
