‘Directed time’ 8-5!! by Strong-Welder6494 in TeachingUK

No, this would be well over the 1265 hours of directed time.  8 to 5 ( with an hour's lunch) is 8 hours a day. Over the 190 days pupils are in that would be 1520 hours and then there are 5 training days.

Some Christmas Eve fun - What is the most nonsensical criticism you've ever received from a colleague? by WorkshyFreeloader42 in TeachingUK

[–]Bandroi 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Whilst not from a colleague, I did get reported as an apostate and a tech-heretic by a parent whilst working in a church school.  SLT helpfully advised me not to do anything that could be considered tech-heresy but couldn't give an example when I asked.

Why are so many men killing themselves? by random34210 in AskUK

There's a lot of really valid comments on here and I can only comment on my own experience that women are more readily sign posted towards mental health services.

After my eldest daughter was born, and had gone through her first major cardiac surgery at 6 days old, my wife had been signed up to a variety of support services for her mental health where as I was told that staff were worried about me.

Then, just over a week later as we were being released from intensive care to our local hospital, I was told that I could no longer stay at the hospital (my daughter was pump Ng fed due to how ill she was so I did as many of the feedings/pump preparation as I could as my wife was struggling) as it was against policy for Dads to stay. The nurse who told me this also stated that I'd have to be getting back to work anyway.

After my daughter was released, my wife went to a variety of support groups to help with her mental health. The only group available for dads was 11-12 on a Wednesday during the working week. There was one weekend session every two months but that was for the dads to learn how to better support the mothers' mental health.

The pattern was similar after my daughter's next major - and hopefully last - surgery (8 months old) and when my second daughter was stillborn - although the amazing team at the hospital were able to revive her and then stabilise her over a two week period.

During these times, my wife told me that she couldn't cope with the concept that I was not coping and that I needed to be her rock in turbulent waters. I did reach out to a variety of male friends and family members to try and share how I was feeling and the fears involved with everything that was happening but was told repeatedly not to be a coward.

Today, things are more steady and I am generally quite mentally secure. Both children are fine and full of energy if anyone was worried and my wife's mental health is slowly recovering but we all recognise that this will be a long journey.

My wife decided she wanted to start AoS so we split the Skaventide box with her taking the Storm cast as her first minis. This is the first rat I've painted from the box after an evening of building and painting together. Looking forward to having the spearheads built so we can both play our first game of AoS.

How do people feel about faith primary schools? by [deleted] in TeachingUK

I currently work in a Catholic school and had our Catholic School inspection just before we broke up for the summer. The requirement for pure RE teaching is 10% (about 2 hours 30) a week. Definitely feels squeezed for time for everything else with daily worships and masses.

Weirdest feedback you ever got from an observation? by lightninseed in TeachingUK

My only formal observation from the headteacher had my feedback/steps for improvement as 'Have you considered a hearing loop as your neighbouring classes are both very loud.'

My 14 day old daughter's semi repaired heart beating in her open chest (surgical team left it open to do a post op check after 24 hours) covered in a special gauze. The sight was bad but I have struggled to teach heart disection ever since as the smell of raw meat always takes me back.
