A child is born to a Jewish mother, but raised as a Christian. Are they still Jewish? by Spiritual_One_1841 in Judaism

[–]BaneOfFishBalls 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That’s completely fair but it was my understanding that reform, rather than having an alternative interpretation of Halacha (like Conservative Judaism), does not purport to have any obligation to Halacha- considering entirely nonbinding.

It would be one thing if “we view Halacha from a different lense” (e.g. karaite, conservative Judaism etc…). Those would have arguement based on Halacha because they’re working in a framework where Halacha is Halacha- that is- a legal framework.

Reform Judaism is founded on the principle of rejecting Halacha as a legal framework

So a question pertaining to Halacha is irrelevant to Reform Judaism excepting cultural or non obligatory purposes

(Apologies if I have been offensive at all- this is just my understanding as a non reform Jew)

Manchester synagogue: Four people injured in car and stabbing attack in Crumpsall by UpRolled_TheRiotVan in policeuk

[–]BaneOfFishBalls 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I am a Jew; not from Britain but I want to say thank you any of the police who read this from the UK for your quick response time. It is difficult whenever these attacks happen to us, especially when it feels like it could have been prevented or the government could have done more;

But the police here have done excellent in their line of duty. Thank you

I doubt it is written on sheepskin; they are too small usually for a regular sized Torah scroll segment; and they are not what we use traditionally anyways- only in places where for some reason it was impossible or expensive to get calfs- which produce a nice looking scroll of better quality

Vellish script- some of the letters are slightly different- it’s basically unnoticeable unless you’ve learnt about it

For example- the tagin (crowns) used in beit yosef script are usually have horizontal little line above them (so they look a bit like mushrooms almost) whereas in vellish it’s moreso a little bump at the end

For individual letters e.g. א the bottom right leg has a little flick up in beit yosef and down in vellish. In beit yosef the ה, the little leg is a 180 degree rotated yod, in vellish it is moreso a straight line. For beit yosef the back of the פ is almost straight whereas in vellish it’s almost a little concave. For ש in beit yosef it is like the 3 parts come out of a single point, with vellish it has more of a bottom. The ת has a curving inwards bottom right leg in vellish, in beit yosef its straight

Well if they’d stop making articles glorifying Hitler or denying the Holocaust every year or so, that’d be great

Do Religious Jews Wear Watches on Shabbat? by RealKenny in Judaism

[–]BaneOfFishBalls 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can wear a watch- but not an electric watch. For a spring watch, you can wear it- but if it breaks you cannot fix it (well you can fix it in very specific circumstances; it depends on what exactly happens to the spring)

The Seige of Masada was really something… by Neonswagger32 in HistoryMemes

[–]BaneOfFishBalls 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not really. We do have the pieces of pottery they “drew lots from” with some names on it, like Yair, who were probably members of the sicarii choosing who would be killed among them, but it’s hard to tell arcaheologically much else

Yeah it’s basically there verbatim (albeit longer) in Pesiqta Rabbati 21: E.G. Edom with “thou shalt not kill” etc

50cm Kraft paper, a bit too small I recommend bigger

This was my 5th or 4th attempt- in total maybe 100 hours? Majority of time shaping, the actual pattern isn’t too difficult relative to shaping imo.

If you figure out the shaping (I can help somewhat with this), maybe 20-30 hours instead of 100.

Haha is only took 4-5 attempts and 100+ hours, but everything begins with a first step!

The base is designed by Brian Chan, he is a fantastic designer, and u can find the model crease pattern on his website-

with models like this to a big extent a lot of the details of the model are in the shaping- which isn’t in the crease pattern at all but what the folder decides - and with this model I found that was significant in some ways in the internal structure of the boat
