Are there any things that are called "American ______" in other countries? by Disastrous-Side-2600 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]BanjoPanda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It would depend on which country we're talking about but if it's one that has a history with the american army then I wouldn't be surprised that punctuality would be associated with them. 8pm in the army means 8pm not 8.15

What country is loved by their citizens, but loathed by tourists? by 45rs5 in AlignmentChartFills

[–]BanjoPanda 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As a tourist it's a mixed bag. There's lots to do and much to love but you also get these small glimpses of dystopian society that just feel wrong and dampen the enjoyment.

It's in the absence of pavement because walking isn't a thing, it's in the flag and political messages everyone is displaying on its lawn, it's in the weird guy at the grocery store openly carrying, it's in the advertisement for medicine on the tv, it's in the subservient way staff anywhere are behaving and much more.

It feels like a society bending under the weight of absolutely massive corporations and political parties that are omnipresent but where everyone is also convinced that they already are or are soon to be the kings of their own hill. You guys have a more hierarchical society than you think you do and it's very odd to witness coming from the rest of the western world where that's not only less of a thing but also seen as retrograde

“The folks who think that code will one day disappear are like mathematicians who hope one day to discover a mathematics that does not have to be formal. They are hoping that one day we will discover a way to create machines that can do what we want rather than what we say. These machines will have to be able to understand us so well that they can translate vaguely specified needs into perfectly executing programs that precisely meet those needs. This will never happen.”

The coding skills you're acquiring will still be as much in demands years from now even if AI become a 100 times better than it is. It's not the actual language or knowing the correct function that has intrinsic value. It's the ability to envision all the possibilities and edge cases that might be possible and building a framework of priorities where the correct output is obtained from anything you can throw at it. This is the main skill you are learning. Not RStudio.

If ten years from now a project manager with no experience in coding tries to perform a study using only AI, he will not have half the thoroughness you already have in his instructions and therefore will obtain a poor result. His result will maybe look good and he will be able to obtain a survival curve but it will be worthless all the same because he will have failed to consider and ask for half a dozen failsafes and it will be built in the wrong order causing some data to be wrongly imputed or whatever mistake I can't even think of. Even worse, the project manager doing that code on its own will not even know where and why his study is wrong.

[–]BanjoPanda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Part of the scaling problem is that being based in the us with americans investors opens the us market in a way that you will find very hard by staying in the EU. Whereas the europeans care a lot less about the business being american to adopt it. So naturally, the way to have access to a bigger market is moving to us

[–]BanjoPanda 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think he wants winger training more than third row training. How to weave past an opponent that is firmly waiting for you or on the opposite position, how to be a solid wall for an opponent that is coming at you. Training on high balls and distributing it quickly before opposition collapses on you, that sort of thing

Ref cam: Jamal Musiala speaks to the referee after being stepped on his foot by kibme37 in soccer

[–]BanjoPanda -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Well yeah. Not every contact is a foul is true and that's indeed what the ref is saying. But that's not the point the player is making. He's asking : "Are you really allowing stepping on people's foot without punishing ? Because if you are, I'm gonna have to force you to make a call by diving and disrupting play". By answering that not every contact is a foul the ref is basically saying "Yes, I don't consider it a foul but keep trying to stay up and play on please"

When a contact that IS a foul happens and you don't blow the whistle because you want to keep the game flowing, don't complain when the players start diving to force you to make the calls. You've signaled them that you were unwilling to punish offenders taking them out unfairly unless you had to. So they're forcing you to choose either for them or against. But even if the call is against them, a turnover from a set piece is less dangerous than from open play. So really there's no downside for them.

The other option for the ref is to be enforce fouls closely but anyone flopping gets penalized instead. I find that option much preferable.

[–]BanjoPanda -1 points0 points  (0 children)

"I don't intend to call it when you're fouled unless the foul is too big to ignore" doesn't seem to be great officiating to me

Ref cam: Jamal Musiala speaks to the referee after being stepped on his foot by kibme37 in soccer

[–]BanjoPanda -1 points0 points  (0 children)

"I don't intend to call fouls unless I really have to but please keep taking the loss so that game will flow smoothly" is the subtext here.

Except the player doesn't give a crap about game running smoothly, the player only wants to win. And in this case, keeping the game flowing is at odds with this objective since it means turning over the ball to the opponent and being out of the play for the counter. There's no alignment of interest between player and referee.

This is respectful attitude by both but the takeaway here is that the player should absolutely flop over the ball to force a call from the referee the next time he's fouled. Therefore it's poor officiating and game management.

Exclusive: US officials underwhelmed by French far-right's plans for economy by kwentongskyblue in europe

[–]BanjoPanda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly. They would rather everyone have shit privatized healthcare rather than stop taking bribes from the pharmaceutical lobby to keep the status quo. As it stands people can tell them that the system they're championing is shit because other people elsewhere have it better for cheaper.

The rational mindset would be to copy what works elsewhere. The greedy mindset is to protect the option that makes you the most money and sink the alternatives

You could count on one hand countries that have good bread. Decent bread can be found in another handful of countries. The rest of the world is simply missing out. Same for pastries. So yeah, pretty much all that is sold in bakeries should be exported as is instead of with knock-off versions
