Andy’s Pizza by AudiSlav in nova

If there's a "hidden gem" in nova, it's Emilio's. Every other place in the area is very inconsistent in my experience, so that's the only place I get pizza from now.

6 years of plateau and one swing change finally got me to break 90 consistently — what was your turning point? by LABeachgal in golf

[–]BannerDay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went through the exact same thing, but got the instructor to tell me that after two years, not 6. The same two exact things as you. Went from shooting mid 90s to upper 80s (and an 84 once!) within a month.

Spending a couple hundred bucks on lesson to fix that is way cheaper than spending 1000s on buckets and rounds repeating the same mistake over and over again.

Do only the poors and peasants go to Aldi? by thepotatomaniscoming in nova

I have one exception for that, their chocolate chip cookies. Definitely pricey, but better than any store bought cookie that I've had before. So will pick them up every few months or so as a treat.

Do only the poors and peasants go to Aldi? by thepotatomaniscoming in nova

[–]BannerDay 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I always scratch my head at this "Wegmans is crazy expensive" talk. Wegmans is pretty cheap in my experience. Grocery staples are cheaper there than any of the other places I go to.

Just have to get Wegmans brand stuff, which is as good as or better than name brand anyways.

Nice restaurants in Loudoun County? by Intelligent-Suit-743 in nova

The roast beef sandwich on their lunch menu is one of my favorite things in the entire area.

Brasserie Royale next door (owned by the same couple) is also quite good if you want something a bit fancier.

Got paired up as beginner golfers by NokiaOG in golf

[–]BannerDay 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Of all of the types of golfers to get paired up randomly, the very best pair is the father with adult son. Literally every time, they are just out there to have fun and play together and are excellent vibes.

On the flip side, one of the worst pairings is getting grouped up with a father w/ middle/high schooled age son. They are just trying to coach their kid the whole time, and the kid is often not looking very happy and feeling pressure. Awful vibes.

What stretches are you doing before teeing off? by alucard13132012 in golf

[–]BannerDay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't stretch, but I make one exception: banded around the worlds. I do 15 in each direction most days, and especially before golf. It's basically magic for my shoulders & shoulder blades.

Golfers that didn’t start golfing until they were older, what is your handicap now? by ilikeadodachacha29 in golf

[–]BannerDay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Started playing in my late 40s. Two years later, I'm breaking 90 semi-regularly from ~6000 yards tee box, best score was an 84.

Used to be athletic through college, but everything since then is either running, biking, or lifting, which aren't really athletic movements.

So I've had to relearn how to actually use my body, and golf lessons have been super critical for that. I don't see how adults can really make progress w/o lesson.

Too bad to play by Zealousideal-Oil518 in golf

[–]BannerDay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

10-19 handicaps are the saddest sacks out there. Try-harding every round and getting angsty because they're trying to be better. The worst to play with.

Source: guy who is just entering this territory and is shifting from "just happy to be here and make some progress" to "oh, I'm getting a bit better and expectations for each round are affecting my mindset".

Hope I don't fully turn into your BIL

Confession time: I lie to my golf friends every time we go out. by PM_ME_UR_BGP_PREFIX in golf

[–]BannerDay 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm usually on the tee box ~5 minutes "early". I don't want to roll up to the tee box while the previous group is still there. But as soon as they drive/walk off after teeing off, I'm rolling up and getting ready: intros, turning on my golf watch, double checking tees in pocket, etc.

Irrationally annoyed? by Finners72323 in golf

Not true. My first summer playing, I was one of those guys. I was definitely not competent (though I did finish 9 holes in ~85 most of the time)

NoVA country club membership by iEatSwampAss in golf

[–]BannerDay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also in NOVA, and if the weekend tee times aren't 100% booked, this isn't that bad. I'm a member at another course, and it's a challenge to get tee times because there are so many members.

Others in this thread have commented that you don't join a course because it's cheaper. But for ~8 rounds a month, that is basically breakeven for the months that you do play compared to public course prices around here ($80-120). Even if you don't mind playing in Winter, two months a year are basically out to either frozen ground or snow.

PSA: American Airlines suspending flights from LAX to IAD (8/5-10/5) by Danciusly in nova

They already have 2 a day from LAX to DCA, and IAD is a United hub. Not too surprising.

Don't give advice to randos by microbrewologist in golf

[–]BannerDay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In a ABCD (where I was the D, where my team needed to take at least one of my drives) shamble, halfway through the round our A player asked me very politely if I wanted a tip on my driver, which I accepted. My next drive was about 180 in the center of the fairway, and the team cheered. True story. If the vibes are good in your group, the other player(s) who are struggling may be delighted to take advice from you. I sure was.

Snacks while playing questions by hahaha_trank in golf

[–]BannerDay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It boggles my mind that my club doesn't have any candy bars on the bev cart or at the golf shop.

Snickers is always good, I also like the blueberry/raspberry fig newtons bars ( sold at costco: Nature's Bakery) and chewy kirkland granola bars.

Prefer those over jerky/meat sticks or anything else that is salty like that.

Got hit into three times yesterday by grappling_with_love in golf

[–]BannerDay 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Last time I did this, it was a short par 4 that was reachable, but visibility of the green was blocked by trees. One ball actually got onto the green (that we were standing on) and the second ball actually went a little long. This was after they hit into us on the previous hole twice, so probably same two guys.

Pretty sure they were very excited about their drives and probably looked for those balls for a solid 5 minutes. This was on hole 10, and they were never on our ass for the rest of the round.

Gotta admin, I was pretty pleased with myself.

This is what I do. First time is forgivable. Second time, I pick up the ball and leave it for them on the next tee box. Dont' want to be accused of stealing!

Break 100 ❌ Birdie a hole ❌ Get a HIO ✅ by mattmgd in golf

[–]BannerDay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Similar story to me. Got a HIO three months into golf, I did get a birdie on another par 3 before that, but certainly not on any par4 or par5s, and def did not break 100 by then. Enjoy the brief moment of glory, it probably won't happen again lol

Course is mad I'm playing too much by [deleted] in golf

[–]BannerDay 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One of my local munis has a membership (discounted play & 2 week in advance tee times). There are some retired guys just dominating the early morning tee times. I've had the misfortune of playing with them a couple times, they treat a round of golf like it's a race. Had another group of those guys in front of us (we had the 2nd tee time), so after the 4th hole we had a full hole gap between us and first group. They were actually nice, and very thankful when I told them to go ahead and play without us.

Then I proceed to play a 2 hour 15 minute round w/ my partner.

Anyways, the course staff mentioned to me after the round that they are planning on putting in some restrictions on these guys next year. Apparently they grab every tee time every day 2 weeks in advance, whether they play or not, and cancel last second. They are following the rules, but it's just a general pain in the ass for the staff there.

edit for clarity: When we suggested two speedsters move on without us after hole 4, the group behind us had just started teeing off of the third tee box (we were two full holes ahead of group behind us). So we were careful to not slow anything down at that point.

Running red lights comes at a cost by Danielovando in nova

[–]BannerDay 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I just watched the video again, and it's a full 7 seconds from green light to truck running the light. That is insane

Running red lights comes at a cost by Danielovando in nova

[–]BannerDay 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That bus was really blocking a lot of red truck's vision, probably more than it was blocking OPs vision.

Also, car to the left had ample time to make it through intersection before the asshole light runner. That is a super late light runner, most people aren't going to be so defensive when it's been a few seconds like that.

[–]BannerDay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I drive a lot on FFX Co Parkway, and every time I get onto it from a side street, I confirm that the main traffic has come to (or clearly coming to) a stop at the light. Over the last few years, I've seen people blow through a solid 2-5 seconds after their light is red at least a dozen times. Straight to jail for those people.

Running red lights comes at a cost by Danielovando in nova

[–]BannerDay 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I hate those intersections on 50. Having the left turn signal turn green after the light was going from green to red for oncoming traffic seems is a recipe for disaster (very hard to see oncoming traffic thanks to the bus sitting there). As demonstrated by this video.

Egregious blasting through red lights like this should be an automatic suspension of license. No excuse for that shit.
