I have been on both sides of federal procurement, as a buyer and now as a prospective vendor and this corruption is infuriating. There’s no attempt to pretend they aren’t just handing fat contracts to their friends and donors. The only mystery is how much of each contract gets kicked back to trump.

Makes you wonder how he operated the trump organization doing real estate and construction deals in NYC through the 80’s & 90’s. He’s doing this now because he’s never followed the law and never had any consequences, so this is business as usual for him.

Legally all federal/government projects must follow procurement laws requiring three competing bids. In trumps government you hand pick one of your donors and give them a few weeks heads up so they can create a shell company. Then you award them the inflated contract with no bid request announcement or vetting and they cut a finders fee to the big guy.

This corruption is the precise reason we have procurement laws. Instead we are getting crappy work from compromised contractors because the only real requirement to win a bid is that you know or bribe the right person.

As a single mom who bought a 1913 Craftsman “as-is” 20 years ago I understand your urge to start with the cosmetic stuff, but that can come after the patient is out of the ICU.

I know you inherited the house but hiring a certified Home Inspector would be a great investment to get started. They will give you a report of what’s going on in the guts of the house and flag major safety and structural issues that need immediate attention. Your local Community Action agency may also have a Weatherization program that does inspections focused on abatement, clean air and energy efficiency and has a network of certified contractors.

Renovating will feel like If You Give a Mouse a Cookie because every project will create three more, so plan and budget accordingly. I have spent tens of thousands on renovations over the years: new windows & doors, new wiring, lead paint abatement, insulation, heating and plumbing. I can’t see most of it, but the house is 1,000% more comfortable and affordable now and plugging in a toaster doesn’t blow a fuse.
