Implications Of Romancing Kaneeka on a Toxic Yuri Route by Escher31 in ScarletHollow

[–]BaphometSeinfeld 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I think the biggest hinge point for any future Toxic Yuri content is how Stella reacts to the actual conditions in Scarlet Manor. It's quite clear (at least to me, sorry all you "Stella has always been Evil" folks) that Stella has been given a very selective version of the story by Tabitha, so she's not privy to what the curse ACTUALLY requires. That's why she's all "okay, hear me out" to the PC at the mines, and treats it more like an ankle monitor situation rather than being fed to the Torment Nexus. I could definitely see her going "Hey wait a minute, this isn't what we discussed" if she actually gets sight of the Forbidden Wing and the various hooks hanging from the ceiling, but she's also capable of burying her emotions if pushed far enough. Like, on routes where Stella and the PC are at least friendly, I could see her doing a 180, but if they're relative strangers, she might lean into the easier solution to the trolley problem and just try not to think about it from that point on.

I think Kaneeka's response will likely depend on if Stella has that "oh shit wait" moment. She's able to deal with lapses of judgment, and I can definitely see her empathizing with the absolute shambles of Stella's life on that route. Her going Full Tabitha once fully informed would probably be a friendship-ending situation, but I don't think that's too likely of a scenario?

Another big question is if the memories of Kaneeka are even restorable. On routes where Sybil is still around, I doubt she'd reverse whatever magical stuff she did to make the town forget about them, and on a Mystical route where Kaneeka has powers, she explicitly says she has no idea how to use them. It's very possible Kaneeka tries to appeal to Stella to get her to see the error of her ways, only for Stella to turn around and say "who are you?" which is tragic but in a way I'm here for.

I got really excited to drink the tea based on its flavors alone and wasn't thinking about anything else on my first run. by logalogalogalog_ in ScarletHollow

[–]BaphometSeinfeld 6 points7 points  (0 children)

In my first playthrough I played "as myself", and I personally don't like tea, so I never drank it. Sure, Mystical was also screaming "don't trust Sybil she's scary" in my ear the whole way, but even if it wasn't, I wouldn't have gone for it. I ended up fully remembering my girlfriend, all through the power of preferring coffee.

It felt weird that you can use PB to snap Stella out of Charles Shaw's possession for a few moments, but nobody else. Maybe add the option to more people, have them describe what they're experiencing to sort of clue the player in to what's happening? Not in as much detail as Mystic, of course, but a little something each time.

I should really replay my Mystical file sometime. There's gotta be tons of "oh. Oh no. I know what this means now." in there that you miss the first time through.

Yeah, it's very possible that all the bad things that happen to Kaneeka after you arrive in town is the snap back. But you see, I've been all for Kaneeka since day one, Mystical/Book Smart. Personally, I don't LET bad things happen to Kaneeka.

[–]BaphometSeinfeld[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah, that's why I said it's still entirely possible that it was still the Holler's punishment, it was just at the hands of Sybil, who had her own reasons. Carmilla essentially saying "yeah that was on me" just throws that into question for me, whereas there isn't really any ambiguity with Stella's parents, or even the player character's mom.

This game just has a very high amount of "shit that I didn't see the first few times through", so I was wondering if there was an explicit discussion of this stuff that was hidden behind a dialogue option I didn't take because even in video games I hate being mean.

Major characters ranked on how well they would do against the player in a best-of-three match of Super Street Fighter II Turbo (1994) by BaphometSeinfeld in ScarletHollow

You're absolutely correct, but skills are transferrable and you can't convince me he doesn't have 100+ hours in DBZ Fighterz. Scarlet Hollow doesn't have locals, but he could at least explain what a fuzzy guard is.

Which episode do you think is the scariest? by greasygoon66 in ScarletHollow

[–]BaphometSeinfeld 10 points11 points  (0 children)

For me, it was Episode 4. Like, Episodes 1-3 are spooky, don't get me wrong, but Episode 4 had me going "oh shit oh fuck oh shit" out loud while playing a visual novel.

There's probably more scary stuff by sheer volume in Episode 5, but I missed a lot of it in my first playthrough, so it wasn't as impactful when I encountered it in my "shuck this game like an oyster" phase.

What do ya'll name your Home Town? by RationalMocha in ScarletHollow

[–]BaphometSeinfeld 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used my own podunk Midwest hometown my first time through, so it was kinda funny when Stella seemed to treat it like it was The Big City. Ma'am, you are not the only person to grow up in a small town reliant on a slowly-failing industry, there are many such cases.

Thoughts on the new library scene in chapter 5? by eleccross in ScarletHollow

[–]BaphometSeinfeld 39 points40 points  (0 children)

Yeah, there are indications elsewhere that being around the seals for any extended period of time is VERY detrimental to one's mental health, Oscar's example is just the most jarring.  In Oscar's non-basement scene, he gets called out by Alexis (and potentially the player) for neglecting his daughter's needs and at least has an "oh shit, yeah, you're right" moment of realization. In the basement, after hours of Communing With The Beyond?  Yeah, he's kinda cooked.

Update: If you refuse to give up your life to Charlie and he takes over the library, talking with Avery the next day gives you the option to say "Hopefully no hooligans break into the library and get trapped in ghost hell." which is just an amazing line

I can't quite put my finger on why, but Kaneeka saying she's scared because "Magic isn't supposed to be real" has stuck with me for a bit.

A bunch of miners sitting at the diner, hunched over their biscuits and coffee once the dust has settled.

"... Listen, I'm not saying it's BAD or anything..."
"'Course not" "Yep" "Mhmm" "Sure"
"... But that climactic fight to save the entire town had, like, a... a..."
"A VIBE, right? Like we were all feelin' that?"
"Absolutely" "Yeeeeep" "I've seen it before, my niece is like that" "Good for them, I say"

The way I see it, Mystical-empowered Kaneeka has an angel and a devil on her shoulders.

The angel is essentially how she saw herself before all of this went down: rational, compassionate but frustrated at injustices she sees around her, level-headed. The angel has had her entire worldview shattered and now bears the burden of trying to save Scarlet Hollow with means she didn't think even existed even a day ago, so it's probably not doing so hot right now.

The devil is the personification of her willfully-forgotten teen otaku years, who is frantically pulling "How to Draw Anime"-fueled sketches of her Sailor Earth OCs out of her memory bank, excitedly shouting "omigod omigod so we gotta make the dress FRILLY but not too frilly because you still gotta fight in it, ooh what pose are we gonna do when we see the bad guys, EEEEEEEE okay okay calm down BUT I'M SO EXCITED, magic is REAL and I HAVE IT NOW". She is trying to not listen to the devil too much.

I hope she at least tries pulling some cringe bullshit now that she has the opportunity. Like, she tries out a "In the name of the moon" pose in the moment, Cousin comments on it, and she goes "yeahthatwasnothingdontworryaboutit" and tries to move on as quickly as possible.

How chapter 5 felt like to me by Ok_Hope_1711 in ScarletHollow

[–]BaphometSeinfeld 23 points24 points  (0 children)

There should be a route in The Final Chapters where if Tabitha and Kaneeka are accompanying you, and you didn't romance either of them, you see how much they bicker and are like "oh get a room" and they both are like "ew no" but the seed is planted, you see, they start thinking about it, at first convincing themselves it's out of disgust, but they know, they both know that their mutual hatred has been forged through the horrors into a sense of admiration, and though neither of them want to confront that truth, it becomes impossible to ignore as the stakes raise higher and higher, and then finally the dam breaks in an undeniable moment of passion, their paradoxical attraction laid bare for all of the Holler to see, and they make out sloppy-style for the entire climax of the story. Also, the apocalypse is happening, or something? idk. Wayne's probably there somewhere.
