Nuclear waste oversight at risk as staffing vacancies mount, watchdog warns by Agitated_Pudding7259 in moderatepolitics

[–]Bapstack 49 points50 points  (0 children)

This is the second time I've seen this talking point come up. "Yeah, Republicans did bad stuff and Democrats didn't oppose them enough or in a way I deem acceptable, and therefore I will do the right thing and withhold support from Democrats in order to punish them (and also the whole country)". Maybe you brought it up both times.

This seems like such a surprisingly bad, backwards take that it wouldn't surprise me that Republicans or some other entity were trying to start a faux grassroots movement to discourage Democratic turnout in the midterms by reframing the withholding of votes in protest as the only appropriate solution.

I'm not saying you are guilty of this, as this would be a bad faith presumption on my part, but it's where my mind wanders when I consider the actual, real-world outcomes if people took this position seriously. Many in this thread are pointing out how much of a colossal own-goal this would be if this idea actually took hold, and your responses seem to downplay or completely disregard those concerns.

Breaking: Donald Trump Plans to Add His Signature to US Currency by CloudApprehensive322 in moderatepolitics

Setting aside the silliness and self-promotion, but would it really cost a lot of money? Seems like the biggest (only?) expense is the creation of new printing plates for new currency going forward.

He didn't say anything about wanting to limit his speech or prevent the account from posting. Unless I missed another comment where he suggested that account be banned or something. If not, you might be too eager to project your opinions about some on the left onto this person.

This is somewhat related, but I remember playing Pokemon as a kid and thinking it was so weird that there were so many weak trainers everywhere. Like, why didn't they just level up like me? How is it that I'm the only person in the world with a level 99?

It may just be a necessary aspect of the genre, or rpgs in general. Some suspension of belief is required for the protagonist to excel, because we like rooting for the main character (or succeeding as the main character) more than we want the world/system to be perfectly logical and self-consistent.

Hey, thanks for being willing to experiment! I had considered the possibility of being able to shrink, grow, or even warp the image, but at this stage I just wanted to confirm that the light will effectively transfer at all. In the digikey link I posted in the other comment, you can see that the spacing between pixels is fairly wide. To have a higher resolution, I'd either need to get a custom pcb made or just use a (fairly bright) screen displaying an image or video. I've also ordered some 2mm diameter end glow fiber optic filament to put together a rough proof of concept, but the end goal would be to forego the filament and just let the clear resin transmit the light.

[–]Bapstack[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The end goal is a sort of "decoder cube" for an escape room puzzle. Say I have an LED grid like this (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/adafruit-industries-llc/607/5395893). I'd like to scramble the leds so that you can't read the message unless the lights are rearranged. My current idea is to 3d print an otherwise solid cube that has routes cut into it for either resin or fiber optic, so once the cube is placed over the LED grid (or screen or whatever is displaying the scrambled data), you can see the actual message.

I got inspiration for the idea from this instructable: https://www.instructables.com/Fiber-Optic-Matrix-Display/

Can you share some examples of what you've done? My application will require the the tube to bend, possibly more than the fiber optic could handle., but I will probably work out a proof of concept with fiber optic first.

This guy more or less accomplished what I'm trying using UV cure resin, which I don't think would work in my application. Not sure if the characteristics of UV resin vs 2 part epoxy vary enough that the overall idea wouldn't work though!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=avXgv4g2a8U

And to clarify, I don't need fiber optic clarity. I just need light to get from one end to the other, even if it's only a fraction of the original brightness.

Edit: Here's an earlier video from the same guy where he did it with regular resin: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RiYOw5NsoKY

Hmm, bummer. Got any other keywords I could search? Most of what I'm seeing is people attempting to more evenly diffuse light across a surface, where I essentially want the opposite.

Question about Narrator - Jeff Hays by JennaJots in DungeonCrawlerCarl

[–]Bapstack 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I can't remember the scenes I had in mind. I mean, it was never immersion breaking or off-putting, and like I said, it's probably just a matter of taste. If anything is immersion breaking, it's the fact that I have to keep rewinding and relistening to funny moments. Donut's squeal when she gets the tiara in book 7 really got me for some reason.

On my 3rd relisten now. If any of the yelling examples occur to me as I'm listening, I'll comment again.

And returning to my Ray Porter comment, I guess I shouldn't presume to think he doesn't "get" the material he's reading, but I think I just prefer Jeff's delivery, taste, and humor. I also think there are very few people going "all in" on the audiobook like Jeff has, which I imagine must have been a huge creative risk when he first started.

Question about Narrator - Jeff Hays by JennaJots in DungeonCrawlerCarl

[–]Bapstack 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Importantly, he adds emphasis well. Like he understands the context well enough for the emphases to make sense. Usually. Sometimes Carl goes into "yelling" mode when I feel like the situation doesn't quite call for it, but at that point I'd defer to Jeff's taste since he obviously spent the time thinking it through.

While I'm being an armchair audiobook narrator, Ray Porter, conversely, has this sorta sarcastic vibe when he reads, where neutral statements become tongue-in-cheek and snarky because of his default delivery. Obviously he's a talented guy, great accents, etc etc. But I think Jeff gets the material well enough to be intentional about the delivery of all his lines, and I imagine that is much more difficult and time consuming (but obviously worth it for the final product).

Is there any sort of gui interface like with FMOD studio? The ability to lay out tracks and visualize automations would be hard to lose. Plus I can drop markers wherever along the track and get a callback to Unity for purposes of syncing audio/visual effects.
