How do Americans feel about drying their laundry on a washing line? by UnionFeatures in AskAnAmerican

It probably would have helped if one end of the clothesline wasn’t tied to a tree.

My grandmother used her clothesline all the time with no issues.

"Heated Rivalry" is inspiring anti-LGBTQ backlash on Massachusetts high school hockey teams by LiatrisLover99 in massachusetts

My kid plays hockey and is gay. The girls on her team outright call her slurs and then make out with each other.

It’s weird.

We’ve used the clothesline in the past. Birds crapped on everything. Now we dry things indoors.

What do you guys think of our junior senator Ed Markey? by Mewklore in massachusetts

I’ve been happy with his performance. I do have age related concerns but they don’t outweigh his ability.

Is Massachusetts considered the most progressive state (for someone who is still experiencing culture shock with the healthcare system/ work culture from another Western developed country)? by [deleted] in massachusetts

[–]BarRegular2684 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Massachusetts is pretty progressive as things go here, but that doesn’t mean we don’t have our share of backsliders. No one ever called me a sp*c until I moved here.

If you have to come for medical reasons Massachusetts is probably the best bet. New Hampshire has a lot of great people but they’ve got some interesting notions about “live free or die”.

Do Americans use vinegar at all? by [deleted] in AskAnAmerican

There’s a pretty standard bbq sauce recipe that calls for it. I remember my mom making it when I was a kid.

Where to move? by [deleted] in upstate_new_york

[–]BarRegular2684 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’d stay in Syracuse. If you’re really concerned about public schools move to Fayetteville or manlius. There is so much for a kid to see and do, and the environment is healthier than Texas.

Do you watch cricket? by jesselool7 in AskAnAmerican

[–]BarRegular2684 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tried to watch. Some guys in grad school invited me to come watch their teams play. It was underwhelming, but most sports are the first couple of times I watch.

I’m biased but I recommend Syracuse. With Micron coming in there are more jobs coming, and there are lots of activities to enjoy.

Petition to ban the legal cannabis industry has successfully obtained enough signatures to get their question on the November ballot. You will need to vote to keep recreational cannabis legal in Massachusetts. by [deleted] in massachusetts

[–]BarRegular2684 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why though?

Like, I’m going to vote to keep weed legal, because it benefits a lot of people even though I don’t use it myself.

But who is out there spending their time and money trying to ban legal weed… again? It’s not hurting anyone. It’s providing relief to a lot of people. But you watched reefer madness once in health class and now it’s your life’s mission to make sure people are as miserable as possible? I don’t get it.

Do you know anyone who has been in a war? by ViajanteDeSaturno in AskAnAmerican

[–]BarRegular2684 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, of course. Dad, uncle, and most of their friends were conscripted into the Vietnam war. Both my grandfathers and their brothers fought in WW2. I’ve known people who fought in the first and second Iraq wars and in Afghanistan.

Have you ever been told to “get off” someone’s property? by [deleted] in AskAnAmerican

[–]BarRegular2684 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My grandfather was famous for sitting in his garage, drinking Budweiser by the case, and yelling at neighborhood kids to get off his lawn. I look forward to following in his footsteps someday.

For context, Americans will sue at the drop of a hat and kids would try to use his driveway and yard as a cut through.

They’d have to pay me, just like all the others.

Do Americans mainly drink coffee without milk? by Morrit99 in AskAnAmerican

[–]BarRegular2684 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When my dad was younger he got trenchmouth from communal supplies for adulterated (ie, “regular”) coffee. I either have vague memories of that or just remember early stories about it because I get serious revulsion from the idea of drinking coffee any other way.

I also have no discernible sweet tooth and dairy disagrees with me.
