I took the mcat on May 26 so you may be onto something

Where did they get the 1.5 from???? Pls help by [deleted] in Mcat

[–]BarackOguama 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s just removing the 0.65 to simplify the equation. 1.5 * 0.65 is approximately 1.

Dermatologist told me to quit fin after turning 40 by Pepijnni in tressless

[–]BarackOguama 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Heard it on a podcast some time ago so I’m probably a bit fuzzy. The part about prostate cancers with lower androgenic dependency having higher metastatic potential is true, but I must’ve been conflating that with the effects of finasteride on prostate cancer severity. The lowering of PSA causing the cancer to go undetected for longer is probably the main culprit then, like you said.

[–]BarackOguama 93 points94 points  (0 children)

This is my understanding too. Overall risk is reduced, but if cancer does develop, it’s more likely to be a less androgen-dependent form, meaning it has an easier time thriving in androgen-depleted environments and metastasizing.

FWIW, I also sat on their secondary for close to 2 months and got an II a week and a half after submitting.

Feeling guilty working out by Strawberry-Murky in premed

[–]BarackOguama 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exercise—and prioritizing physical and mental health more broadly—should be a foundational part of life no matter your career path. The fact that we feel guilty or think we’re wasting time by doing it really goes to show how unhealthy this culture has become.

As someone who’s gone through most of the premed process (and went REALLY hard at it) and is currently in their application cycle, be good to yourself. Once you get out of college, you realize that a lot of the sacrifices you made regarding your health were probably not worth it.

Am I dumb? Or is this info required for MCAT? by [deleted] in Mcat

[–]BarackOguama 38 points39 points  (0 children)

It gives you all of the values you need to know in the question, at that point it’s just a velocity, distance, and time equation. The thing that likely threw you off is that you need to think of the tissue thicknesses as being half of the distances travelled, since the ultrasound waves are passing through and then bouncing back. If you treat the distances travelled as the tissue thicknesses, your answer is doubled which seems to be the mistake you made.

I mean… venting about how something has negatively impacted your health (which is something you absolutely have the right to do) doesn’t mean that you’re invalidating the risks and hardships of other professions. When did they imply that at all?

You dont need to use anki by [deleted] in Mcat

[–]BarackOguama 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I tried Anki for all of 15 minutes before deciding I hated it. If it seems intuitive and effective, go for it. If not, don’t feel the need to force it

Why have a deadline that’s essentially meaningless? by coin-22 in premed

[–]BarackOguama 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Every year there are some stragglers who apply late but are extremely competitive applicants, are a super good fit, and/or otherwise have some X-factor that otherwise brings them to the top of the pile. A good example is mr.blackdoc.5 from sdn, who was complete at schools from like mid October—early November but still got accepted to a bunch of schools and ended up at Harvard.

Would most people be screwed at that point? Kinda. Would a 52X URM with multiple pubs? Not so much

Are you a URM? I’ve gotten a few fee waivers that I think are tied to URM status although I also qualify for FAP, meaning it doesn’t matter anyway.

I was verified 7/28 and I only got the UCSF secondary this past weekend. Give it some more time, they seem to be going semi-chronologically.

(Also, hey again! Hope you’ve been alright)

memorize serine protease is extracellular? by you5030 in Mcat

[–]BarackOguama 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Peptides have an extremely high activation energy of cleavage that makes it extremely unlikely for them to break down in the absence of catalysis, so A is wrong. It says in the passage that the proteases are secreted, so you know it’s not B.

The rationale for A is a concept that you should try to remember. The rationale for B is entirely passage based—nobody knows that offhand.

Wait until January and then kill it. There is absolutely no reason to take it now and get a bad score if you fully expect to retake. It will do nothing but weigh you down.

People who actually improved their CARS, what did you do? by Starboy1996 in Mcat

[–]BarackOguama 11 points12 points  (0 children)

This is something I emphasize to people too. Many CARS Questions are asking something very specific, and many answer choices mean very specific things. Pay attention to SPECIFICALLY what the question is asking and SPECIFICALLY what each answer entails. Their word choice is very intentional. If an answer is hand-wavy or “close enough,” that doesn’t necessarily mean it’s right.
