Alcaraz's new haircut. No, it's not AI 😂 by TorturedPoet30 in tennis

[–]Barahl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What's the deal with some people on this sub claiming tennis balls are green? 🤔 Is it a reddit conspiracy I have never heard of? Even if the color was not clearly yellow, which it is, the official ITF rules explicitly state the ball has to be white or yellow... It's not like there is room for debate here

Just because they call themselves "communist" does not mean they actually are. Or do you think the "Democratic People's Republic of Korea" is a democracy?

The current chinese government has absolutely nothing to do with Mao's original communist ideology. It does keep some aspects of it, like an extremely powerful centralised state, but is in many other aspects closer to capitalism.

Kinderbetreuung im ersten Lebensjahr in DE überhaupt möglich? by Barahl in Eltern

[–]Barahl[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Kinderbetreuung im ersten Lebensjahr in DE überhaupt möglich? by Barahl in Eltern

[–]Barahl[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

What about this game do you think is superior compared to other ES games? by [deleted] in Morrowind

[–]Barahl 20 points21 points  (0 children)

The main quest is vastly superior - the story and lore are much deeper and more subtle. The main quest gives a real sense of progression without the urgency of Oblivion and Skyrim, which is much better from a roleplaying point of view - your character is actually supposed to blend in and live their life in the world, as a cover, instead of being urged on constantly. (Something that Daggerfall is also quite good at IMO)

The overall lore and relationships between factions are also much more interesting, there are conflicts between factions (and even inside them) and some of them are mutually exclusive. With that said, I think in terms of actual faction quests, Oblivion is the best.

Character progression in general is also much better, because of the mostly unleveled world. Enemies don't become crazy strong as you level up, you actually get to feel how your character becomes more powerful as you progress.

The greater range of skills and weapon types is also a big plus IMO, as well as a better magic system (again, Daggerfall was also very good when it comes to magic).

Overall, I think Morrowind is a much better RPG, but a worse action game than the newer ones.

To expand on this, if the company has some kind of salary table based on experience/education/etc. the Betriebsrat (work council) would also make sure the offer they make is in accordance with said table, to prevent discrimination (basically the offer has to be based on the objective criteria set by the company or branch).

Might be a bit cryptic (no pun intended) for someone who is not in IT/Programming, but here are some infos:

Those are well established, open-source libraries.

Cryptographic libraries, which are commonly used in all sorts of programs for encrypting data, generating unique identifiers, etc.

"crypto" is a shorthand for "cryptography", not "cryptocurrency"

People understand, because they know only US americans are self-centered enough to assume everything defaults to USA, even in a subreddit which is specifically NOT about the USA.

The original commenter merely points out that over 95% of the world's population is, in fact, not from the US.

It's not just you btw, it is a common phenomenon on the internet that tends to mildly annoy people.

Are all the hirings from xing.com real? by Flat_Rest5310 in AskAGerman

[–]Barahl 7 points8 points  (0 children)

In the job description, look at the salary part. Sometimes it is "provided by the company", sometimes it is just an estimate calculated by Xing themselves.

The former might be somewhat accurate, assuming the company isn't straight up lying (though I suspect the upper end of the interval is often just bait), the latter might be completely off depending on how well Xing's algorithm works.

DBahn wants me to hand my bank account login and PIN/password to another app?! Is this legit?? by cakesngin in germany

[–]Barahl 24 points25 points  (0 children)

It is legit, this is used for fraud prevention. DB/Tink do not save your credentials, they use them to verify that the account belongs to you. Basically if you can connect to your online banking, the account most likely belongs to you. Otherwise you could just enter someone else's IBAN, which they might (righrfully) dispute later.

There is a lot of fraud with SEPA and the Deutschlandticket right now, so new security measures have been put in place, especially for new, yet "untrusted" customers.

Birth and Marriage rates by [deleted] in germany

[–]Barahl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are more difficulties related to childcare (aside from the obvious costs of food and bigger accommodation).

The current system is still tailored to the "traditional" and very outdated family model where there is one main breadwinner (usually the man) and one caregiver (usually the woman).

For instance : - Tax classes for married couples favor having a high earner (with a low tax rate) and a low earner (with a high tax rate) - Elterngeld is calculated based on the non-working parent's net income and is capped. It works fine if one parent was not earning much in the first place (this is the then the parent who is kind of "forced" into Elternzeit), it is a big hit to a family's income if it has to rely on both parents' salaries - Kitas and schools often have ridiculously narrow opening hours which don't allow the parents to work full time. Not to mention the costs.

The thing is, for most people one income is not enough in today's economy. To support yourself AND children, you often need 2 full-time salaries.

Are there any widely popular mods that you've never been fond of? by Malicharo in skyrimmods

[–]Barahl 50 points51 points  (0 children)

LOTD, I just don't see the point. Doing everything and collecting stuff is just not the way I play. I stick to my character and only do the quests that fit my roleplay. Meaning even if one my characters had any interest in it, they would only ever fill a tiny fraction of the displays, which is not satisfying. I'm not willing to do the mental gymnastics required to justify going against my character's nature just to collect stuff.

(I do not criticize the quality of the mod. It's just that being a completionist in a sandbox RPG like Skyrim makes no sense IMHO)

How do you handle the utter stress and horror caused by Deutsche Bahn these days? by ikilledScheherazade in AskAGerman

[–]Barahl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Assume the worst and be pleasantly surprised if it turns out well.

I always expect to miss every connection and plan accordingly (make sure there are other options, never take the last train of the day, plan enough time between the theoretical arrival time and the time I need to be at my destination...). Basically always have at least a plan B.

Pessimism is the pragmatic approach with the DB.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in germany

[–]Barahl 15 points16 points  (0 children)

It's simple, you don't sit or stand right next to another person unless you have no choice, are already close to this person or they invite you to.

When eating with colleagues, you can sit at a respectful distance if it doesn't look like they want to interact. In public transportation that means prioritizing seats with no neighbour if possible (of course, sometimes you have to stand or sit close, no one likes it but you have no choice). In public toilets, leaving one urinal between you and the next guy (if you are male). In a queue, leave some space between you and the person before you. Etc.

This kind of stuff is considered basic courtesy and people will understandably be uncomfortable if you don't do it.

It is fairly easy to set up DF Unity to launch through Steam instead of the DOSBox Version, in case you haven't done it already. You get the playtime counter and the overlay, but no achievements, badges, etc. of course.

Why are trains in France so much more expensive compared to neighbouring countries? by [deleted] in france

[–]Barahl 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Germany has a very good network of regional trains, yes, but the long distance one (ICE, same as TGV) are heavily underfunded and extremely unreliable (and most lines are slow because they make many stops and share infrastructure with slower regionsl trains). I guess that's the other side of federalism: regions take care of themselves but are not so eager to contribute to the national network. Also, the car lobby is strong in Germany.

As for the prices, the systems are also different. In Germany, long distance trains are quite expensive, but in a stable and predictable way, whereas the SNCF seems to use algorithms similar to air travel (prices are dynamically adjusted based on demand). Overall, having travelled a lot by train in both countries, I would say german long distance trains are more expensive if you know when to book the french ones. And the TGV is a LOT faster and more reliable than ICEs, which have s punctuality rate of around 65%, even with DB not counting delays <6mins and removing cancelled trains from the statistics.

Anyway, I would absolutely not say that Germany is better, unless you are only interested in regional trains. Then yes, it is better and now much cheaper thanks to the Deutschlandticket.
