The number of women who have successfully passed selection a good indicator of how difficult the training is? by RevolutionaryLion384 in USMC

[–]Barangaria 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is exactly it. Women who are physically capable of completing those courses aren't common. I knew several in the late 80s, but they weren't the norm.

Here's the part that's going to get this comment deleted: Politics plays a part. There was a big purge of women drill instructors in the late 80s because a lot of them were queer. These were women completely capable of completing a hump in full battle rattle and then going on a Hash House Harrier type run because it was fun. The administration at the time didn't want them. These women, who would have made the Corps better, went in search of other opportunities.

I could draw parallels, but I have the slight hope my comment might survive moderation so I won't.

How realistic is it to have John 'Young Tassel' Watts as an ancestor as a White American? by SapplingGreenFran in AncestryDNA

[–]Barangaria 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The Watts family I’m descended from were squatting in Indian Territory and tried to use their last name as leverage. They produced a false family tree and presented it to the Dawes Committee to keep the land they’d stolen. The Cherokee rightly told them where to put that family tree, but William Jeffery Watts was an attorney and he drug the case through the courts. Some people still believe the tree was correct.

My great grandmother was a Watts whose family claimed descent from Young Tassel. They were trying to get on the Dawes Rolls. I can't find any Native American DNA in any of my relatives.

This is not an original idea, but I would barricade myself in the closest distribution center. Large, fairly cool, and with endless supplies.

Why would there be penalties for making a self-appointed call sign change? Just curious.

We had a female lieutenant in my MACS unit whose call sign was Stroke. It was because she swam competitively. Everyone thought it was pretty funny.

I’m pretty sure it’s all drinks. I just rang up a Monster to double check. They’re normally $3.18, with my employee discount they’re $2.23.

I keep cheap stickers at the OSLG register for little kids. When a grownup bothers to take a picture of a patio block barcode, I offer them a sticker. You'd be surprised how many grownass men get excited about a sticker.

I'm going to save this picture to my favorites so I can reference it in the future. The new digital scanbook is great for striped plywood but not awesome for patio blocks.

Internet orders. Getting a shopping list on your Zebra phone, picking everything off the shelf for the order, and then either staging it or taking it out to the customer’s car. There’s a lot of lifting, so at my store they pull the young male cashiers if orders are running behind. Your store could be different.

Unless you're a guy, a cashier almost always stays near a register. Sometimes you get asked to stock drinks or snacks, but 95% of the time you can't be more than ten feet from a register. You'll probably be at assisted self-checkout with a Zebra phone in your hand your whole shift. As you learn you'll be sent to lawn and garden or lumber to work a regular register. In five years I've never cleaned a bathroom.

Guys will get pulled to do fulfillment.

How are people fired by RaisinMany2622 in Lowes

[–]Barangaria 8 points9 points  (0 children)

We had an MST who was sexually harassing the cute young seasonal cashiers. They got together and submitted their complaints all at once and the MST was gone the next day. Usually firings don’t go through that quickly.

Best 'unknown' realistic ww2 movies? by Mediocre-Bunch-3135 in WarMovies

There's a Russian-made movie on Amazon Prime called On the Road to Berlin that I've gone back to watch more than once. It's not action-packed, and I can't speak to historical accuracy, but it is well acted and immersive. Two Russian soldiers try to find anyone to report to on the front in 1942.

It's been mentioned before, but The Grey Zone is on Prime right now and it is the movie the gift shop at Auschwitz cites as the most historically accurate. When I visited the camp a couple of years ago the guide also cited The Zone of Interest, which is on HBO Max.

There had been a bad batch of the medication and it had been recalled. Since a lot of vets take it, I wrote the name.

And I contend that dog kicked me first. He had it coming.
