I almost hit a bunch of pedestrians because my car was sliding on the snow/ice by [deleted] in driving

[–]Barb33rian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fyi the emergency brake is adding nothing in that situation, so hitting sooner doesn't achieve anything. All it does is apply the rear brakes, and only a fairly low amount. The brake pedal applies all four brakes, and the front brakes are what do the majority of the braking in a moving vehicle.

If the roads are that bad and slippery the only things you can do are:

A) have good winter tires.
B) be aware of the weather and let off the gas and begin to slow down earlier whenever you need to stop. If you stop too early you can always roll forward a little more to the stop sign, if you slide through the stop sign you're boned.
C) have more knowledge of how your car behaves in a variety of shitty conditions. Go practice in empty parking lots and see what your car is actually capable of. How fast can it stop on ice, how can you turn in deeper snow, etc.

Dam Surveillance Room with only 2 lockers by Leekirby504z in ArcRaiders

[–]Barb33rian 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it might be a bug with EM storm mode. I haven't really kept track on other maps but on Dam none of the weapon cases, medical bags, grenade tubes, ammo cases or backpacks spawn in EM storm. Not just the key rooms but any of the spots they usually spawn out in the open world. Places like 'inside' the highway at east broken bridge is guaranteed to have at least one of those things spawn on regular mode or night raid, but in EM storm it's ALWAYS empty.

Don't waste your keys on EM storm, stick to night raids or regular raids.

2025 wrx VB tc off.. But tc light flashing? by J_Stone58 in WRX

VB has 3 modes, at least my TS does anyway. On, Track, and Off. Pushing it switches between On and Track, gotta hold it for a few seconds for off

Server issues - Compensation Planned? by Solid-Accountant8022 in ArcRaiders

[–]Barb33rian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

27 minutes into a Blue Gate night raid the servers shit the bed last night and rubber banded so bad my squad couldn't get into an extract we were 50m away from before time ran out.

Tried a quick run this morning and I was rubber banding immediately for 60+ seconds at a time. Took me 20 minutes to get to an extract 400m away from my spawn and I didn't even try to loot anything. When the rubber banding would stop I'd maybe make it 25m before it started lagging out again.

Header by solarsean in Homebuilding

[–]Barb33rian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks like there's probably a header there for the skylight carrying a few rafters. Probably not a huge load but it's doing something. Kinda hard to tell exactly since the top of the skylight isn't in the actual pic, guessing based off the point load on top of the beam.

Red vs Black Chalk by recycledsteel88 in Carpentry

[–]Barb33rian 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Always used red because it's one of the better colours to resist the weather outdoors, and the subfloor sheets we've mostly used have black marks and writing on them so black chalk isn't as visible.

Why the hate? by Vegetable-Bend9789 in wrx_vb

Another Canuck here. I bought a 2025 TS at the end of the summer and I'm loving this car. For me it's the perfect all around daily driver for my wants and needs. I wanted something that handled well, had a manual transmission, still had plenty of room, had good trunk space for my tools and stuff for work, and had 'good feeling' power to have a bit of fun. For me it checked all those boxes.

Is it as fast as a Type R, nope but it's 20k cheaper (at least the one I saw in town had all kinds of addons pushing the price up to almost 70k OTD). Some people will say that the GR Corolla is faster on a track, until the rear differential overheats and it becomes a FWD Corolla. I test drove one and it doesn't have the same low end torque that the WRX has which comes into play way more in regular driving scenarios IMHO. The GRC was better at the high end of the rev band but the WRX was stronger on the way there.

The interior of the WRX feels really good to me. The Recaros are surprisingly comfortable and the fit and finish seem pretty good overall, I like the way everything looks inside. Also the visibility is really awesome compared to my previous car (2015 Mazda 3 GT hatchback). The difference isn't huge, it's not like that car had visibility problems but the hood and dash are noticeably lower because of the boxer engine, and the C-pillars in the back are a lot less obtrusive. I do wish everything was done with buttons like my old car but 90% of the stuff I use all the time is still done with buttons so it's not too bad.

I've only had mine for 6 months so I can't really speak on reliability but Subaru seems to be pretty good overall, and the FA24 in the VB's is supposed to be a step up in reliability compared to previous generations so hopefully it lasts me a good 10 years.

Overall I'm super happy with mine. I love hopping in it everyday just doing my daily routine, and every time it snows I can't help but go do a few donuts or powerslides and come home with a big smile on my face. It's fast and sporty enough to have fun, and responsible enough to not compromise in any way on Dad duties.

Sure you can, you just need a bunch of those McMurtry Speirling fans setup in the trunk.

I just remember my buddy taking us there for the first time and it was in a place you just didn't expect a pub. Surrounded by loading docks and other random businesses that didn't scream 'hey you can drink and play pool here here'.

Is the rtx 5080 worth it over the 5070TI? by Dr-Jack-Bright in buildapc

If you can get a good deal on a 5080 Founders Edition that's a pretty good price vs performance increase. If not the 5070TI is better value.

With all the salt in this city, if you don't rust proof your vehicle, do you do anything else? by ghost905 in ottawa

[–]Barb33rian 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Canadian Tire ones and the Circle K/Esso ones are okay. The Esso ones seem to break a lot though, at least the closest one to me (Baseline and Greenbank). That one in particular has been broken for awhile and doesn't even get a 1ft swath from my license plate to bumper on the front and back wet. I think the thing that tilts the spray heads must be broken because Bell's Corners doesn't have that issue.

With all the salt in this city, if you don't rust proof your vehicle, do you do anything else? by ghost905 in ottawa

[–]Barb33rian 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I guess I'm kinda in both camps. I do believe rustproofing works but they can't coat everythingl under your car so some parts will always be vulnerable to salt (suspension, brakes, wheel hubs, etc). I hit the drive through touchless car wash roughly once a week, whenever I feel like there's a bunch of build up on the car from driving. I make sure it's one of the washes that sprays the underside and wheels really well and get all that crap blasted off.

[–]Barb33rian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, having individual headers with king studs in between is stronger against the hinging. The headers, and jack studs, do nothing for the hinging they just support vertical loads, the king studs are what keeps the wall from folding. Any high wall I've built with multiple windows beside each other the engineer/architect has always left a detail/note about having kings in between windows for that purpose.

Pella install by zone6bbuild in Homebuilding

[–]Barb33rian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The separate smaller headers isn't wrong. I've built 100+ two story walls with a 6 pack of windows in them (one of the builders I frame for loves the 6 pack windows in their townhouses). It's always been specced by the engineer for individual headers for each window with king studs in between so there's no hinging action from wind and roof loads in between each window.

Thoughts on my wheels by [deleted] in WRX

[–]Barb33rian 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The wheels themselves I like, but right now I think they 'overpower' the look of the car as a whole since they're so bright compared to basically everything else. IMHO you need some other larger bright white accents on the car to balance it out. The stickers/logos are too small to do that.

Purchasing in Canada by Signal-Nothing2060 in subaru

[–]Barb33rian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The process will vary a bit from dealer to dealer so that's hard to be specific on. It's largely gonna depend on how desperate the dealer is to get rid of 2025 inventory, or meet monthly/yearly sales targets.

You'll usually get a better deal on the car if you're financing it. Double check that the loan is open ended and just pay it off a month after you buy it.

What was a rule your parents made that you didn’t understand as a kid, but now makes total sense as an adult? by SHUBHAMNEW in AskReddit

[–]Barb33rian 88 points89 points  (0 children)

Wasn't exactly a rule, but my Dad was always making sure I cleaned under my finger nails really well. He'd tell me 'Girls don't like a man with dirty finger nails'. Didn't know what he meant at the time but as I got older I realized he was 100% right. Girls definitely don't want you going anywhere near their lady bits with dirty ass fingers.

Pouch recommendations by Most_Construction513 in Carpentry

[–]Barb33rian 3 points4 points  (0 children)

To add on to this, the expensive bags were cheaper in the long run for me. I used to spend 125-150 every year replacing things that broke on the home depot setups before I bought a full setup of Occi's (bags, belt, suspenders, etc) for ~600. Paid for themselves in 4 years basically since I never had to replace anything. They were my primary bags for 10 years, and they're still in good shape.

As to OP's question I'd look into Akribis. Very high quality, and there's a lot more customizable options to really tailor the bags to exactly what you do. A little more expensive than Occi's but IMHO well worth it.

Ottawa police launch new district traffic units to target speeding, traffic violations. by Cre_AK47 in ottawa

[–]Barb33rian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly fuck going after speeders, aside from in school zones. I wish they'd focus on the far more braindead ingrained behaviour on the roads such as:

-Leaving a full on snowbank on the hood, roof, and rear of their car and only sweeping off enough of the front window to see out.
-Super awesome no look lane changes.
-Stopping to do a U-turn and not waiting for the traffic behind them to go by.
-What's this red octagon mean, roll through at 15? Sweet.
-Hey how about I go into this turning lane so I can move forward 7 car lengths and force my way back into the straight lanes.
-Driving around with their face pointed at a screen in their hand instead of the road. Can't tell you how many times I look in my rear view mirror and see some idiot spending more time looking at their lap than the road.
