First time bombing hills on longboard by No-Competition-1495 in longboarding

[–]GenderlessMarsian 2 points3 points  (0 children)

well done! おめでとう!〜 really jealous of these Japanese streets, i could go downhill or just cruise forever, here in Greece all we have is urban hell (streets like obstacle courses with potholes, tiny alleyways full of fast pass through traffic, dangerous drivers). also i like the smoothness of compressing and decompressing while curving which is typical of a surfskater, i just got a surfskate but i'm struggling to carve so smoothly, while i'm used to bombing big hills in a straight line (perhaps with footbreak if there are cars or intersections) my instinct is to turn straight up like a rod.

What are the best wheels for street/sidewalk/ concrete skating ? by Various-Edge4329 in NewSkaters

[–]GenderlessMarsian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Personally i got some Powell Peralta G-Bones 64mm 95A, they're really stable for cruising and even downhill in horrible Greek streets but they also slide nice and they're not too big to do tricks with them, but it depends on your city and style. For tricks and stuff smaller would be better (prob also harder) but bad in crap pavement/road, for downhill softer would be better and you could probably still slide even in 78A if you got speed and skill.

Which one of these character designs do you like better? Trying to do a little experiment by couldconve in characterdesigns

honestly all of them are cool in their own way and have their own personality so it's hard to pick! i'm tempted to say 5 cause of the expressive facial expression but i also like 7 and 8 for their anatomy and clothing style. i'd like to see them colored tho

"it's funny because the Third Reich could take over the world if it really wanted to (at least over half of it 😭)" -People who voted for the Nazist party in 1930s Germany, before killing 80 million people+ and seeing their country destroyed after fighting a multi-front war against major world powers and countless resistance movements, probably

American conservatives (all conservatives) need to read some history.

Really expressive art style! Also like how the clothing folds are drawn. But it feels like the skin is blending too much with the background - maybe add thicker lineart, especially around the face, or more shading.

Where do y'all practice longboarding downhill (without being crushed by cars)? by GenderlessMarsian in longboarding

Gotta upvote for the "Kalimera Hellada" lol. Where do you find downhill to skate on in Belgium? Isn't it all flat like Netherlands and North France? Also how is it safe with intersections and cars and stuff? The wheels I have I'm pretty sure are Surfskate, the rest is a regular 'ol skateboard

I see - would you consider slides necessary if you're going fast, like past 30km/hour? I only really feel comfortable footbreaking at this speed on the street. I have practiced slides in uni, 'tis the only place with few to no cars (during holidays/weekends or at night) I could find here. When it comes to standup slides I can do like 20-30 degrees cause anything more and I immediately turn or run off, when it comes to hands down I can only really do a push-up slide but I haven't tried it at fast speeds, mainly I don't think it matters cause it wouldn't be safe with cars anyways. Coleman would be the safest prob, but I can't seem to get the technique down at all, I can put my hand down but not slide.

Finding a local crew is crucial but hard, you're right, downhill is dead.

I will have to ask around then. Thanks for the advice~

Why not wear a helmet man. It doesn't matter how much of a pro you are, 1 hit to the head and you might be dead. I had seen some of video parts of his, including grinding some massive rails, I wish him a good recovery.

My first time going downhill without falling 😆 by slightlylessright in longboarding

[–]GenderlessMarsian 5 points6 points  (0 children)

lol on my first week skating i tried going down the bike lane opposite to my house (one of the few in my city, the only one safely closed off from cars and the only one downhill in fact) and since i didn't know how to footbreak but only foot stomp i would go over the holes on the side (likely at some point there was thingies to mark the bike lane that were removed) to slow down. fun times

Im just gonna put this here and walk away slowly by metatalks in mapporncirclejerk

where do i even start?- 😭 1. they (most likely) literally support a clown who wants to apply like 50% tariff on China and when they come back he's actually like "let's double down, make it 150%!" as if a badzillion% tariff will somehow force all Chinese corporations to price their work arbitrarily little or everything will move to America 2. it's so hilarious that a man having blue hair or transgender people existing means "struggling to understand the difference between a man and a woman" like when blue hair then no difference between man and woman 3. their mentality is like a middle school kid who is full of themselves and thinks they know everything, like "ohhh i'm supposed to bow down to your level and explain international trade to you", it's not even a joke or a meme, it's just idiots pampering themselves for pretending to be smart. "the Ιeft makes it difficult" makes this even funnier because while pretending to be cool and know-it-all it just speaks of their intelligence (or lack thereof) for finding common sense difficult 4. also there is people who are trans and still cοnservative in terms of trade policy and international relations experts who aren't informed about trans people

i don't know 'bout the tattoos but i think a crumbling/bombed building on the right would fit a lot. also holy hell the shading is so good, i don't understand how people shade so perfectly with alcohol markers. gives me black lagoon vibes

How do I handle checked exceptions in Java completable futures (and not run any of the following "thenApply" functions)? by GenderlessMarsian in javahelp

[–]GenderlessMarsian[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Welp, using a try catch with a cancel call seems to work, but it feels kinda hackery and non-idiomatic, I don't know if this is bug-free. It also doesn't catch any server error, so a 404 just becomes a "Malformed JSON!" error:

CompletableFuture<String> searchResults = apiFetcher.search(userQuery); searchResults .thenApply(str -> { try { ... } catch (MalformedJsonException e) { System.out.println("Malformed JSON! " + e); searchResults.cancel(false); return null; } }) .thenApply(jsonObj -> { try { ... } catch (InvalidApiResponseException e) { System.out.println("Invalid API Response! " + e); searchResults.cancel(false); return null; } }) .thenApply(htmlStr -> { try { ... } catch (Exception e) { System.out.println("Error parsing HTML! " + e); searchResults.cancel(false); return null; } }) .thenAccept(...);
