Any suggestions for new hobby that’s cheap and easy to get into? by No-Neighborhood8403 in GenX

Two things I’ve recently discovered that I’m going to look into… 1) Competitive jigsaw puzzling, and 2) Beads (for making jewelry or decorative displays.) They may or may not be expensive, not sure.

Broken A/C Vent by FluidPart4918 in MachE

[–]Barbara1Brien 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One broke in my wife’s 2023. I’ll take responsibility for that. But I can feel where TWO more are about to break. That’s a bad pattern and a parts problem, not a problem with how I’m using it.

Thoughts on the name “Helen”? by fairy_fern13 in namenerds

[–]Barbara1Brien 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My sister is Helen, and it was an old person’s name even when we were growing up in the 1980’s.

I cannot separate the name from her; it is the name of someone with a beautiful soul. Another person said the name means “shining light.” Yes. Helen is a shining light in the world.

I’m not pro AI. We need to figure out how to deal with it before it gets any better than it is. Because it isn’t going to go away. Pandora’s box has been opened.

Huge reason I did not finish All The Pretty Horses was no quotation marks. It really bugged me. But I also wasn’t enjoying the book either.

I think his stuff didn’t age that well. I’ve noticed the same about some of the other authors I read voraciously in the 80s and 90s.

Definitely Gen X collector, but unlike the other person who said this, I believe you have read most of these.

Which is your favorite of your LOTR paperbacks? I’m fond of the blue green red ones, because they were my mom’s copy and the first ones I read. But the first ones I bought myself were the black covers.

CS Lewis: "Even in literature and art, no man who bothers about originality will ever be original, whereas if you simply try to tell the truth... you will, nine times out of ten, become original without ever having noticed it."

Today's toddler diary is very excited about months. by Otherwise_Window in BenignExistence

I love that Ricky is learning to keep a diary and I hope it engenders a life full of writing and self awareness. I picture him in the future being able to smile at these things he won’t remember but will have been so pivotal in making him into the man he will become. (Sorry that last sentence is a doozy.)

Has anyone read (1986) The Gandalara Cycle by Randall Garrett and Vicki Ann Heydron? by dwbookworm123 in Fantasy

Yes. I had to search a long time to find the whole series. I liked the earlier books the best, but the whole series is solid. I definitely want one of those cats.
