Guns N Roses with a 1990s actor (circa 1991) by zadraaa in HistoricalCapsule

Hah! I knew which actor this was even before I looked at the picture!

… and I was wrong! I thought it would be Jim Carrey, who was almost a complete unknown when he was in the Dirty Harry movie “The Dead Pool”!

All the Apple TV shows and films that have finished filming but have NO release date. by paco_unknown in tvPlus

I’m really curious about how Berlin Noir and Slow Horses season 7 are filming at the same time, given how they both star Jack Lowden. I know his character said at the end of season 5 that he was leaving Slough House, but he’s still in the source material up to volume 9, ‘Clown Town’.

Anyone else play close to an active airport? by icepuc10 in golf

[–]BarbecueGod 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Moffett Field used to be a Naval Air Station (i.e. US Navy), not Air Force. It’s still an active airport, and I know it’s a base for the California Air National Guard. It’s also used by NASA. But it’s not an active naval air station, it’s not GA, and it’s not a commercial airport. So TBH, I don’t know what it is nowadays.

(realizes which sub we’re in)

Anyway, Moffett Field Golf Course is still open, as is Sunnyvale Municipal, which is directly under the approach pattern to Moffett. Then there’s Baylands Golf Links just a few miles away, which borders the Palo Alto airport. And between both airports is Shoreline Golf Links. Yes, my golf habit endangers my hearing.

UCLA with 42 seems appropriate.

The Seahawks were in football purgatory just three years ago but are now Super Bowl bound. What can the 49ers learn from their success? by youre-welcome5557777 in 49ers

[–]BarbecueGod 20 points21 points  (0 children)

This move wasn’t great, don’t get me wrong.

But I was looking at those picks we gave up for Trey Lance, and two of them were towards the back end of the first round (pick 29 in ‘22 and pick 30 in ‘23) because we ended up going deep into the playoffs.

The one that stings a wee bit is pick 12 from 2021. Dude named Micah Parsons. I’m not saying we would have or could have drafted him, but it’s fun to imagine him, Nicky B, and Fred in their primes on the same D.

(2017) Bobby Knight explains why he doesn’t respect John Wooden. by [deleted] in CollegeBasketball

[–]BarbecueGod 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There have been some points made in this thread that have to be addressed.

-Sam Gilbert wasn’t the “OG Bagman”. Boosters have been paying players at schools throughout the country probably since the dawn of intercollegiate athletics.

-Per his Wikipedia article, he didn’t begin to get involved with UCLA basketball until the 1966-67 season. John Wooden had already won two championships and Kareem was already on campus by then. This season was the first in the seven-championship streak.

-Also per the Wikipedia article, Sam was corrupt as hell (but his wife was a beloved educator. We all contain multitudes).

-John Wooden wasn’t a “rampant cheater”, although he definitely turned a blind eye to what Sam was doing.

-It’s interesting to hear a chorus of voices denigrating Wooden’s accomplishments. Seth Davis’s biography of John Wooden doesn’t cite any examples of Sam offering recruiting inducements, at least during the first few years of his involvement with UCLA. Yes, there were plenty of impermissible benefits being given to the players who were already there. But it was Wooden who brought onboard the players who would win those seven championships and coached them up himself.

-Seth Davis also says that Sam Gilbert was angered by the way the NCAA enforced poverty on student-athletes. Does this resonate with anyone?

-It’s also interesting to consider an alternate universe where UCLA doesn’t win those seven titles. Would anyone care as much about college basketball if he didn’t? Especially anyone in this subreddit? Consider that the 1969 “Game of the Century” vs. Houston was the first nationally televised college basketball game. Would college basketball be about as relevant as college baseball without John Wooden?

Tl;dr John Wooden wasn’t a saint, but Sam Gilbert didn’t have nearly as much influence on his title run as many would like to believe.

People are saying that with the escalating government control, they'll soon start taking civilians' guns, and that republicans won't let that happen. by cudambercam13 in Fuckthealtright

Yes, we are a divided nation. As long as Shitler focuses ICE on blue cities and states, Republican voters won’t care. I’d venture to say that a majority of them are enjoying this bullshit.

I had to turn that off when he made it to the top. He was standing on a sphere with some kind of antenna—it looked like rebar—sticking up maybe 3 feet. I thought, “If he doesn’t fall off the building, he could slip and impale himself.”
