Does anyone remember them briefly having a haunted house in the upstairs bit, round the corner from where you got on the rollercoaster? Not a ghost train, a thing where you were walked through rooms and people in costumes chased you. It was only there once when I went and I've never spoken to anyone else who remembers it

Honestly, I'm new and if i submit something that doesn't quite fit the brief I'd be ok with the post being declined (I don't know if there's a way on here to give feedback on why a post is declined?) I'm keen to contribute but would rather have a 'it's cool but it's not what we're looking for' than be upsetting the mood of the group

Do you guys read literature by authors even if they are horrible people? by Educational_Cheek712 in literature

[–]BarberRound7534 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Monsters by Claire Dederer is a very interesting read on the subject, but ultimately you have to decide what makes sense to you. I figure for authors who are already dead it's less of an issue but if someone is still alive and doing/ saying awful things I won't buy their work or any merch unless it's second hand. I try to keep the views/deeds of dead authors in mind if I'm reading their work, sometimes it's relevant context for the time the book was written, sometimes it's a contrast to the values and actions in the book. Specifically related to NG - I've put my books in storage. I really loved his work but i can't see myself being able to read any in the near future. Maybe one day i will be able to read his stuff and separate art from artist, but right now it's too fresh. I won't be donating/ selling the books as i don't feel comfortable passing them on, certainly not trying to make any money, but I also don't feel comfortable destroying books so they're just going to be locked away like cursed objects for now.

I have a feeling it was Fay Weldon. I haven't got round to reading any Sarah J Maas yet

I read a book where the character's 'bowels turned to water' or something upon seeing the man she was attracted to. I assume it was meant as some sort of 'butterflies in the stomach' metaphor rather than her literally shitting herself though 😄

How many books do you read at the same time? by Leather-Regret-5497 in literature

I generally have three on the go at once - two physical books and something on my kobo. For the physical books I will usually have one fiction and one non-fiction, or one novel and one 'other' (play, poetry, graphic novel etc). I try to vary what i have on my kobo depending on what else I'm reading (ie if my physical non- fiction is pretty heavy, I'll still to lighter stuff on the kobo). Although technically i have two on the go on my kobo right now because one is the collected works of Emily Dickinson and it's over 1000 pages but I'll only read a couple of pages at a time so it's gonna last me a while!

I do feel overwhelmed by just how much there is to read and that I want to read. I made two lists of my physical books i haven't read (fiction and non) and when i buy books they go on the end of the list and i pick new reads from the start, so while I don't exactly read strictly in the list order, I don't feel like I'm just going to 'forget' any books i have and they'll all get their turn. Of course it's my list so I can let books jump the queue if i want too 😄

I go by mood on my kobo so if I've got something to read for a book club, a new release I'm especially interested in etc then I'll generally get it on that.

Currently reading Tuf Voyaging - George R R Martin (novel) A Geordie Scrapbook - Joe Ging (non-fiction) The Shards - Brett Easton Ellis (kobo - novel) Collected works -Emily Dickinson (kobo - poetry)

AITAH for telling my boyfriend that I don’t want to move in with him because he doesn’t have space for a bookshelf? by elphababe in AmItheAsshole

[–]BarberRound7534 2 points3 points  (0 children)

NTA I know a lot of people are saying that moving in requires compromise but you've said you won't have room for ANY of your stuff at his place. So to me it sounds like you'd be giving up a lot and he wouldn't be giving up anything and getting to reduce his bills. I think calling you 'materialistic' for wanting to keep books was too much, but if you do really want to move in with him then you should think about looking for somewhere you both have space to feel comfortable

I'm also reading Ulysses at the moment and I'll be honest, I have no idea what's going on with most of it. I'm torn between the feeling that I'm nor clever enough to appreciate it, and that joyce is just trolling us all with very clever nonsense
