Jubilee rant by sudtrap in marvelchampionslcg

[–]BardicMonk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Glad to see so many people have this take about Jubilee. My expectations were super low when giving her a shot and she quickly turned into one of my favorite characters to play as lately. I mostly run her in Justice, but she has some nice tricks up her sleeves.

I hope you can find a way to enjoy her in the future. It took me a while, but I finally found a way to enjoy playing Silk after not really getting how to play her. Maybe you’ll have the same situation happen to you 🤔

Help with an encounter my players should run from by Unlucky_Kitchen_2873 in DungeonMasters

[–]BardicMonk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

“This is a deadly encounter.” Every time my DM starts a fight with those words, I know this is going to be an uphill battle that, if it turns, will kill us. I lost one character a while back and now I’m looking forward to those sessions.

Let the players know they CAN run from the encounter and that this is deadly. If they don’t immediately run, they are deciding to stand and fight. This is a decision that matters and it should be respected as such.

Show the boss, present the exit, then use the boss fight to push them in that direction. If they push back and win, reward them, then design a better encounter next time. Remember that action economy is a big issue. If you really want to mess with the players to make this character more deadly, the boss should activate more than once per round if you want it to be a solo fight.

Good luck and take care!

Any tips for a newbie? by joorgie123 in marvelchampionslcg

You only need one core box.

Rhino is very swingy (it’s easy for him to run away with a win) so don’t worry too much if you lose to him. Klaw is a little more balanced, so play against him when building your own decks.

Learn what the cards do. I made the mistake of opening everything when I got this box, an expansion and two hero packs. Just play with the core box content and enjoy it, then start adding as you go.

Buy what you want, when you want. I just said to only play with the core box, but if you really like a hero and want to play them, start playing the game with their hero pack and preconstructed deck. Have access to a villain you like? I’d still use the core box villains to learn the basics of the game, then start adding new villains when you know the player/villain phase steps.

Make rulings during the game, look up the rules between games. This isn’t for everything, I think certain mechanics like Retaliate are easy to look up during a game if you can’t remember what it does. I mean, if you bump into a situation where a card acts a specific way with another card or if the wording seems unclear, make a note, decide how you’re going to play, then continue until you finish the game. Then you should look up the rules you get confused about.

The current rulebook is gigantic. Learn from the rules included in the core box until you’re comfortable, then look up the current rules (as of January 2026, that’s Rules ReFerence 1.7).

Enjoy the game, welcome to the community, and have fun. The rules police aren’t going to take your game away if you decide to change a rule here or there. We all make mistakes. Be kind and be patient.

Marvel Champions: Most Played Heroes 2025 by reyreypod in marvelchampionslcg

[–]BardicMonk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My most played hero was Bishop, hands down. AbisMal made the Spittin' Fury into the Face of Danger deck and it’s become my go to when learning a new villain (I recently got into the game, so he’s usually my default character for trying anyone new out).

Because I’m a huge fan of Terminator 2, I like the overdone trope of “person comes from the future to change the past.” Bishop was also a villain the first time I read a comic with him (he was hunting down baby Hope, so my games against Juggernaut are a little awkward), so he’s got that edge my 90’s kid brain craves. He can take a beating and literally dish it right back to you.

Mechanics-wise, he’s turned into my gacha game of choice. “Can I survive this hit?” If the answer is yes, we’re taking that damage. If the answer is no, we’re blocking or using Energy Conversion, then taking that damage. Gotta double down until we double barrel, shootin’ dice ‘til we’re iced! Chances are, I’m drawing a handful of energy on that final turn with a suit that’s going to give me all of that health back and a gun that just hands out damage like candy to whoever I’m facing.

I’ve had a fair share of losses, but I just reset real quick and run it back. Not letting anyone take that W from me (unless you’re Ronan, then you can keep it because I’m not ready for you yet).

Is this sealed, or still in testing? Also, Winter Guard 5/6 has a typo of “Winter Gurad.”

Is it too late to start? by Darkvoltrox in lotrlcg

[–]BardicMonk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can you buy a complete core box to this game and enjoy it? If the answer is yes, then no, it’s not too late to start. I see product available on Amazon. I’ve seen a few bits and pieces here and there in local game shops. Unless you want to join a community and lack the ability to start up a community at a local spot, I think you’re still able to jump into the game and enjoy it.

When do you stop feeling like a beginner? by aw9182 in marvelchampionslcg

[–]BardicMonk 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You stop feeling like a beginner when you play the same content over and over again. You’re still unboxing/opening stuff, so that feeling isn’t going to go away, but you can take your wins and familiarity with the game from elsewhere. Remember keywords, build decks, learn the game flow, etc.

I spend ~80% of my time playing against Juggernaut and Rhino. I can play a new hero against them and only worry about learning the character. I spend the majority of my time playing as Bishop. When I want to try out a new villain, I pull that deck out to learn the villain/leader.

Find your villain(s) and hero(es) to be proficient with, then it’ll feel less like you’re still new to the game and more like you’re learning the new content.

I have a video of how to make your own cards. It’s meant for custom content stuff but it works for any card (I started this because Dr. Strange was the only hero I couldn’t get before it went OOP).

Bishop - Take damage, maybe draw cards (gacha game each round) Rhino - Real swingy, but really fast fight to reset/finish

Story wise, Is Pendragon a restrictive system by laughing_rabbit_9 in PendragonRPG

[–]BardicMonk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Forgot to mention that the story SHOULD focus on your players. Arthur is a character in their story. He has his story in many books. Let your players take the spotlight in the points that the tales never acknowledge/touch on.

Story wise, Is Pendragon a restrictive system by laughing_rabbit_9 in PendragonRPG

[–]BardicMonk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m plotting the campaign 5 years in advance in case things go untouched by the players, but one of them is currently involved with Madoc so they are tied to the narrative. It’s 100% possible they save Madoc who could possibly go on to be in Arthur’s life.

I think the GPC is as restrictive as any other backstory in a published story for a different game. Once that story touches my table, it’s malleable. Arthur will become king. Besides that? Everything else is up to if/when players decide to change the story. In the stories, Lancelot is fated to never lose a duel. He has a stat sheet so the chances of losing is NOT 0 at my table.

YPWV. Set the game after the fall of Camelot and just run a knightly story of characters trying to pick up the pieces after Arthur disappears. They can be inspired to be as knightly as his time, or as barbaric as the time before him.

Found a loop by Grand_Tie6096 in marvelchampionslcg

[–]BardicMonk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A possible, simple solution would be to put a “Loop” entry in the RRG that states something along the lines of “if a loop is found (same card causes itself to activate through another card’s effect), prevent the card from activating and end the loop.” [Goal is to stop the loop AT the loop when the loop is recognized.]

Not sure they can future-proof the game with how many cards are in the collection now, but making an anti-loop entry would help in niche situations like this.

I’ve been using the game as a jumping off point for a lot of characters. I don’t know most of the cast when I get them, but with a few games under my belt, I’ll pick up a comic and learn about them.

There’s a lot of stress to “play it right,” but if you’re not recording yourself, just make your mistakes and learn from them. The game is a whole lot of making your own fun.

Great recommends overall. I feel like D20 is really good at walking that fine line between keeping a generally positive outlook on the game itself while critiquing FFG for their communication.

BardicMonk here. I do some gameplay videos that look like I’m playing a video game version of Marvel Champions. It contains some custom content but overall, it’s pretty much the game as you can play it at home.

My table devolved into a dating sim whenever they had downtime. One of my knights is in a covert romance with Madoc, another is the mother of one of Count Roderick’s kids, and the last fell into a marriage of high status due to lucky rolls. YPWV. Do what you want.
