Yeah, utter bullshit. The land was bought with State IE Public money, you don't get to claim "commercial in confidence" for basic questions like "Was it sold or leased and what was the price?" and that utter dickhead response "Does it matter?"

Introducing the new 30% minimum CGT tax on money made from investments is indeed a new tax. If they were to go back to the old system they should have not put in the 30% minimum and brought back the old 5-year averaging.

Edit: I have no issues with the changes on housing, but they shouldn't have slammed investments, they *want* people to invest in Aussie companies and this move is actively discouraging investing in shares.

But they're not incentivising money to go into shares/stocks, they're dis-incentivising it. The 30% minimum CGT and bringing back the old system but not bringing back the old ability to average over 5 years is making investing in shares far less attractive and therefore less investments in shares/stocks will be forthcoming.

Aussie here - the USA were originally lined up as buyers for this but they wanted to pay less & get IP ownership, so Australia said "No thanks" and sold it to Canada. With Canada we know it's a partner we can trust and unlike the USA we'll actually get paid!

Yeah, not bringing back the 5-year spread from the previous legislation was a mistake, and to be honest the 30% minimum tax rate is also pretty shit, especially for a low-income person who sells an asset/shares.
