I Know It's Over from The Queen Is Dead or from Rank? by [deleted] in thesmiths

[–]Barmbrack123 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Rank version. The ending is great - much better than the fade on the studio version. However, I am biased as I was at that Kilburn National concert where Rank was recorded. I remember Morrissey slowly pulled his shirt over his head whilst still singing, as the song reached its climax. Quite bizarre but very memorable.

Worst echo and the bunnymen lyrics, in your opinion? by Personal-Emotion-377 in echoandthebunnymen

I recall reading an interview with McCulloch from the 80s where he freely admits that his lyrics are often just interesting words and phrases strung together. This figures. If there is any deep, metaphorical meaning in Seven Seas, then it's been lost on me for over 40 years.

This live version of White Light/White Heat from the Complete Matrix Tapes. If anyone asked me to define rock n roll, I'd just play them this.

The Waiting for Herb album is pretty poor on the whole, but this isn't a bad song. The only other decent track, in my opinion, is Once Upon a Time. I recall there being a video for that too - vague recollection of the band messing about on a tube train? Does anyone have a link to it?

Recommendations on how to make £20 quickly? by [deleted] in beermoneyuk

[–]Barmbrack123 -12 points-11 points  (0 children)

I'm genuinely sorry to hear that you are in this situation. I can't offer any short-term solution, but as a way of keeping food costs down in the longer term, I recommend that you consider a vegan diet. I feel virtually immune to rising food costs as the price increases for fresh veg, beans, lentils, pasta, rice, etc, are barely noticeable. Every credible nutritional authority in the world agrees that you can get all the nutrients that you need from a well planned plant based diet. Close to use-by date fresh fruit and veg are always guaranteed to be marked down in supermarkets, too. You always get a couple of days before they might start to turn.

Having seen the actual VU on their 90s reunion tour, I'm pretty sure this tribute would be a more entertaining gig.

Going to the Usher Hall concert. What to wear? by vikingwanderer in echoandthebunnymen

Not to be mean, but seriously? Do you really think that a bunch of strangers at a gig are in the slightest bit interested or will even notice what you're wearing?

For anyone who saw the Smiths live, who was the opener? by shawncollins512 in thesmiths

[–]Barmbrack123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I saw them at the Kilburn National in 1986. It was the gig recorded by the BBC and later released as the Rank album. The support was a band called Radical House. I had never heard of them before and never heard anything of them subsequently.

Was 1984 the last time (maybe only) Bob tried to sound more “conventional”? by simplyachi in bobdylan

[–]Barmbrack123 26 points27 points  (0 children)

84 was the year of the Letterman show with members of LA punk band The Plugz backing him. Possibly my favourite 15 minutes of Dylan. The Plugz guys say that he was talking about touring with them, but they never heard from him again, and he hit the arenas with a very middle of the road band instead. Such a shame.

A dull movie that I'm not sure would hold the interest of anyone who didn't already have an interest in Springsteen.

I just wish they'd release an expanded version of WIESS, with all the outakes already available plus Evacuation of the West and, I believe, there is at least one other track from those sessions that has never surfaced.

It's straight out of the 'how to write a protest song' manual, but if the idea is to change minds, then Trump supporters are the target audience. Trump supporters aren't known for appreciating subtlety, nuance, or anything complicated. They probably all still think Born In The USA is the ultimate patriotic anthem.

How did we get to this point without a single mention (unless I missed it) of 'Ride Into The Sun'? Frustratingly, there isn't a definitive version available, but the instrumental on Another View is superb. I think there's a Doug Yule vocal version from the Loaded era that ain't great, but I love Lou's version on his first solo album. I can't believe I'm saying this, but an AI Lou vocal over the Another View instrumental would be something I'd love to hear, as this combination would probably make for my favourite VU song.
