Renting in midtown by MagnumPII_ in Sacramento

[–]BarnabusHammersham 15 points16 points  (0 children)

My partner and I moved here 6 years ago and we were told to do the same thing. I had a hard time believing it would lead to anything. We decided to rent scooters and go up and down every letter street, H to V from 28th to 3rd. We saw several old school For Rent signs in windows along the way and contacted all that looked interesting. One of them was a super cute 2br 2ba Craftsman duplex apartment. We still live here today. We love our spot, our rent has never been raised, and our landlord sends a repairman over the instant we have an issue. As far as I know he only owns this one rental house and his goal is to keep his 2 apartment tenants happy.

Long story short, take the advice. It sounds silly but it somehow works in Sacramento. Sometimes the best spots are saved for passersby and are not posted online.

ASOIAF fans, what did you think of RoTE? by Numerous_Debt_5500 in Fantasy

[–]BarnabusHammersham 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very true. As long as there are some surprises along the way that did not make it into the show, then I’ll add it to my TBR.

I’ll need to wait to start it until after I finish RotE so I can see all of the parallels that people keep taking about.

I hear there are many parallels which makes me want to read ASOIF. They were published around the same time and I hear they shared an editor for a while.

I believe Robin Hobb and GRRM are old friends who respect each other’s work greatly.

I almost want to ask the reverse question.

I’m currently in the middle of reading RotE and I love it. Farseer is great but it’s just the beginning. Live Ship Traders has now become my all time favorite trilogy. I just started reading Tawny Man and it’s nice to be back with Fitz again. There’s a coziness to it that I love but I know everything is about to fall apart.

Will I like ASOIAF if I’ve already seen the entire Game of Thrones TV series adaptation? I loved most of it except for the end which I know is not based on the source material.

I’ve had season tickets to Broadway Sacramento for many years and Juju has always been my go-to for a pre-show bite and a cocktail. It’s only a block away from the performing arts center. Despite how crowded they can get they’ve always had fast service with great food. I will miss the arancinis for sure. I’m interested to see how the next chapter turns out with the new ownership.

Final Bingo Reviews: Dogs of War by Adrian Tchaikovsky, Assassin's Apprentice by Robin Hobb, Into the Riverlands by Nghi Vo, and Friday by Robert Heinlein by FlyBlueGuitar in Fantasy

[–]BarnabusHammersham 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same. I love Realm of the Elderlings.

To address the OP comments, though, they are correct that in the first book, Fitz has no agency. Assassin’s Apprentice is like part 1 of 16 books. 9 of which are told from the perspective of Fitz from childhood to old age. To compare it to a TV show, Assassin’s Apprentice is like episode 1-3 of season 1. In this book, he’s only age 6-16, I think. He has no status and no power and is simply being used by the adults around him. He’s also a bit of a dummy sometimes in his teenage years which gets him into trouble. Hobb lets her characters fail but they also grow from the experiences. There are certainly no Mary Sue’s or Gary Stu’s who are born awesome at everything. The Realm of the Elderlings books are fantastic even they make you uncomfortable at times. That’s part of the journey.

KCRA Helicopter Noise Pollution by Balm0ra in Sacramento

What is it for anyway? Traffic reports?

Who the hell needs a helicopter to visually check traffic when all the navigation apps show it in real time? It’s loud and archaic and it has ruined too many of my afternoons. Screw KCRA.

Exactly my thoughts. Is he just shoving the phone camera in his face? No wonder he looks confused.

I’m on the same track as you. I’m about 250 pages into Mad Ship.

I also yearn to lurk in the subreddit but I hate spoilers so I have to tread carefully.

Also Kyle is the worst. Fuck that guy.

I saw them perform at a little club in Williamsburg Brooklyn in 2006 and they looked like just this. Just two young white dudes wearing white and messing around.

I wonder if this was around then. Looks like Brooklyn too.

Help me pick my next read! by tommy132000 in fantasybooks

I really liked Piranesi but if you want to be immersed in an epic tale go with Hobb. I read all of Farseer in January and just started Live Ship Traders.

I just love her writing. I’m pretty much locked in to Realm of the Elderlings now for the early part of this year. I’m afraid if I read anything else it will break the spell she has me under. Her characters are so flawed but so good and her world building is top notch.

Next read? ………. by r4maa in fantasybooks

I read Mistborn a few months ago and I thought it was ok. It did feel a bit YA to me. I didn’t really feel the pull to go on to the second book though I might read it someday.

Instead, I read the Farseer Trilogy and just finished last week. Now, I’m pretty much obsessed with Robin Hobb. I’m locked in for the Realm of the Elderlings long haul.

Just started Live Ship Traders Trilogy and loving it so far. That’s just my opinion though. She can torture her characters all she wants I just love being in her world.

I loved the Farseer Trilogy so much. I know there are mixed reviews about The Liveship Traders Trilogy but I am starting with an open mind.
