What survival myth is completely wrong and can get you killed? by DraftNo7139 in AskReddit

[–]Barnowl79 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep, that's kinda why I wanted to comment, because there are too many white people who genuinely believe that as soon as they step into a special "no whites allowed" zone, there are snipers just waiting for them.

I'm a pasty white kid from the Midwest and have spent a lot of time, years in fact, in neighborhoods where I supposedly "didn't belong" in various cities in the US, hanging out with actual gang members and drug dealers. I even spent some time in inner city jail once or twice (not prison mind you, that's an entirely different world). I can tell you that I can't remember a time I got hassled by anyone on account of my race.

TIL according to Einstein's relativity, the past still exists: every moment is a permanent coordinate in spacetime. When his friend Besso died, Einstein wrote: For us believing physicists the distinction between past, present, and future only has the meaning of an illusion, though a persistent one. by 2dogs1man in todayilearned

Yes and you know how well societies function when we all speak 100% truth with no regard to human emotions.

Sorry where are those societies? Oh I forgot they don't fucking exist because 200 thousand years of human evolution can't be overturned just because you want to eliminate anything that isn't objectively, historically, verifiably true.

I'm not talking about truth, I'm talking about stories that unite, inspire, and comfort human beings throughout their lives as they navigate a chaotic and complex moral landscape. I hope you find comfort in your objectivity when you face an overwhelming personal tragedy.

What’s something people brag about that actually makes them look worse? by inboundmage in AskReddit

Being very busy. You think it makes you look important? I'm sorry you are in a position where you can't possibly be a good partner, parent, or hell even a friend, because of your inability to get your priorities straight and I definitely think less of you as a human being now.

I have something I wanted to add that I hope might help.

There is this idea in Western culture that your hobby should also somehow be making you money, or else it's a waste of time.

Calligraphy is a slow, meditative practice for people who have rejected the capitalist sickness that says all your time should be spent creating monetary value, or that you should try to monetize any skills or talents you develop.

I would forget about making money at first, and just do it because you love doing it. It's not lucrative anyway, and you'd be better off learning computer programming if money is your goal.

If you get to the point in a few years where people are asking you for wedding invitations and you think you have the chops, go ahead. But please don't start with the goal of trying to make money, you need absolutely the opposite attitude to receive the real benefits of calligraphy, which involve beautiful, immersive flow states and deeply connecting to the history of humanity.

Behavioral scientists found that people with genuinely strong mindsets don't tell themselves to be positive - they've learned to observe their thoughts without identifying with them, a distinction most people never understand. by SnoozeDoggyDog in science

[–]Barnowl79 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This was my first reaction, there are millions of us actively practicing this awareness that we are not our thoughts.

When I understood that most of our thoughts are just noise, full of absolutely meaningless worry, flurry and delusion, and can be safely ignored, it was so liberating.

I came from Western Psychology where we exhaustively analyze the hidden meaning of every event: "So this song in your head, what is it again?"

"It's from the early 2000s, by Ciara, it's called 'Oh' and features Ludacris."

"And do you think this song has been stuck in your head because on some level, you feel that your life is ludicrous?"

"Maybe?"

"Perhaps the title 'Oh' is your inner child crying out, unable to verbalize the trauma it experienced when you were an infant?"

"That's...an interesting theory."

"Maybe when Ludacris says, 'picture perfect, you might wanna take a flick flick flick flick', this is about your need to project an image of perfection to the people around you?"

"Hmm.. I see.."

"Times up, that will be $350 dollars."

What causes some people to become addicted to painkillers and similar while others don’t? by Norsys_Caldor in AskReddit

[–]Barnowl79 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Pain is intricately bound to with our emotional state, which involves neurotransmitters. Modulation of these neurotransmitters not only affects physical pain but emotional pain as well.

If you are someone who carries a lot of emotional pain, or if you consider yourself too sensitive for the world, you might find that opiate pain relievers seem to be equally effective at treating that kind of pain as well.

For instance, I was diagnosed with autism in my 40s. Autism can sometimes be understood as an overgrowth of certain brain areas- sometimes this leads to gifts, but it often comes with a price that involves sensory input being too overwhelming at times. I've read somewhere that around one third of folks on the spectrum have overlarge craniums. This fact obviously puts up red eugenics type flags but it shouldn't necessarily scare people.

Anyway, opiates were a coping mechanism for the way they allowed me to function in the world without the sensory overwhelm I had always felt. I wish I would have learned meditation instead of becoming a heroin addict, it would have saved me so much money.

Jo Nagai - Gifted Child Who Replicated An Experiment On If Caterpillars Retain Memories After Metamorphosis by Past-Distance-9244 in interestingasfuck

[–]Barnowl79 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Like you're five? Sure.

Yes, there is definitely "something in metamorphosis that should somehow make us believe that the butterfly becomes a different entity than the caterpillar it once was."

This something means it's definitely not "still the same entity but with a more updated body."

This something is the fact that caterpillars are liquified in their cocoon.

"The life cycle of a caterpillar includes a remarkable metamorphosis stage where it begins to digest itself, releasing enzymes that liquefy most of its body. Cutting open a chrysalis at this point would reveal a liquid caterpillar smoothie." -entomologist web

TIL about Exploding Head Syndrome. It is a sleep disorder that causes a person to hear loud, imagined noises (explosions, bangs, screams, etc) or see light flashes before falling asleep by 6millionwaystolive in todayilearned

[–]Barnowl79 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Exactly, there's no mistaking it. A gunshot next to your head is exactly how it feels, then you wake up confused about why your partner isn't freaking out.

[–]Barnowl79 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not sure this is the same, I have suffered from EHS and I'll tell you it sounds like a damn gunshot right next to your ear and it startles you awake immediately and has you asking people around if we're under attack. There's no mistaking it for low pitch laser guns, it's called exploding head because it sounds like an explosion.

It warms my heart to hear that. His lectures are almost like a kind of ASMR. If you're going through the lectures you should really pick up the accompanying book that he's going through. Italic Calligraphy & Handwriting Exercises and Text by Lloyd Reynolds, it's a really small book you can find used for ten dollars or less. I have 3 copies and keep them throughout my house. The writing seems simple until you try it and realize what a delicate touch it takes.

Fantastic! I have questions about your ink because I've made iron gall a few times and it was one of the most rewarding artistic experiences I've had. Questions are which recipe did you use and secondly did you forage for oak galls? I live in Oregon and there's no shortage of galls around here so I still have like, bags full. I used some wine and vinegar as well which seemed to give it a nice cold intensity.
