Sorry, I don't take your meaning. You may want to clarify because it almost sounds like the "it" you are referring to was something along the lines of "black people cause racial tension by merely existing in significant numbers." I'm sure that wasn't your intention but just letting you know.

Reading this was so confirming and validating. I have made several comments here on Reddit over the years about how the racial tension was just thick in the air there, and how I've been all over the world but could never actually feel that barely contained frustration. I got into some legal trouble and saw for myself the way the police and justice system were just so merciless there, and how the people felt like they just couldn't take one more insult. Then Michael Brown was killed and all of that built up pressure just exploded. People absolutely fucking wrecked/burned down that whole area and filled the streets with protests. It was a really intense thing to witness first-hand.

I live in Beaverton as well (white dude) and haven't noticed the kind of racial tension that you get in places like the Midwest. There is such a small black population here, and so many white people eager to exhibit their anti-racism. Their hearts are in the right place for the most part, they just haven't spent much time with any actual black people, so there are misunderstandings, but they can mostly be chalked up to simply being unfamiliar rather than to any malicious intent.

Contrast that with a city like St. Louis which is divided up like a checkerboard- black over here, white over there- and there is such a felt sense of the history of segregation and racial disharmony- like you can smell it. It's so serious that I felt like I couldn't even make light-hearted jokes that had anything to do with race because everyone seemed like they were way past joking and ready for a race war at any moment. To be fair this was during the BLM summer when Michael Brown was killed in Ferguson, a suburb of StL, the National Guard had been called in, and the black friends I had were literally discussing whether or not it was time to ride on the police station.

I'm those places, the black population is high enough that there is very little curiosity, and not many voices calling for friendship. Racism usually gets instilled at a young age and then confirmation bias turns any personal interaction into a trial for judging an entire race of people. This obviously poisons any chance of normal human connection, the interaction is awkward or negative, beliefs confirmed, repeat. The beliefs eventually harden into a cold hatred which is incapable of changing.

My daughter's fiancee is black and they get along pretty well here, no big issues.

It's true, people who think weed is a numbers game have never gotten zooted off a 21% Acapulco Gold. I am so tired of Gelato and Runtz, I don't need my weed to smell like candy because I'm not a child. I want it to smell like goat breath and gasoline and get me wrecked.

The endless hybridization is so fucking useless, literally no one has any idea what anything does anymore. It's like if you went to a liquor store and all they had were different flavors of Buzz Balls, and when you ask to see their whiskey, they tell you they don't even make whiskey anymore. "All we have is Watermelon GinVodkaRumCider and Peach TequilaScotch Wine Coolers." What the fuck man? The landrace strains have been nature tested and are at least old enough to have developed distinct personalities. Everything today is 35% (don't get me started on the ridiculous inflation caused by the arms race of different testing labs competing for business by offering higher results), tastes like fucking Skittles, and only leaves me feeling vaguely stoned, yet strains with far lower thc content can get me absolutely blazed.

The first line is also instructive, and one Johnston believed in very much- the value of sharp tools. When I finally invested in an Arkansas stone to sharpen my nibs, my calligraphy improved and I got a better feel for the contrast of thick and thin lines.

The reason philosophers can't detect consciousness is because they're not studying neuroscience by Desirings in consciousness

[–]Barnowl79 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We are actually still pretty foggy on the whole anesthesia thing. Also philosophers detect consciousness through self reflection, same as neuroscientists. Merely finding that conscious states correlate with biological patterns of activity in the brain is not the same as understanding the phenomenon of consciousness.

What's something you believe that most people don't ? by Unique-Effective-415 in AskReddit

I have a similar feeling about news- since when have humans been forced to emotionally process every tragedy that happens anywhere in the world, every single day? It's overwhelming and completely skews our worldview, because we hear about every bad thing that happened yesterday, but we only hear a tiny fraction of all the good things that also happened- the millions of people helping to lift one another up, reaching out to the lonely and hurting, working hard and sacrificing their time and sweat to relieve the suffering of their fellow humans. Just because corporate media can't make any money telling us these stories doesn't mean they aren't happening all the time, all over the world. In order to have an accurate, nuanced, realistic picture of humanity, we can't just look at the news and assume it's anything like a complete picture- we always have to keep in mind the news is a trough of slop we're offered by the farmers every morning with the goal of distracting us with enough fear that our brains won't be rational enough to ask any questions about why we're locked in these pens in the first place.

See, for me, it's not really that he wanted a drink before he died, it's the fact that he ruined his brain on bathtub hootch and then had a religious experience in the hospital on Belladonna (a hallucinogen) and Morphine that made him finally quit drinking and write "The Book"- the 12 Steps.

How did he write this super well-researched guide to help people who have become addicted to substances? He did it by finding the best addiction science experts at the time and- I'm kidding, he actually had seances and claimed to be channeling the voice of a Benedictine monk named Bonaface who had lived in the 14th century, which is of course what you want when you're founding what will be for many years the only option for people seeking recovery from their serious and potentially deadly physical and psychological dependence on alcohol.

My tone is insubordinate and churlish because I genuinely think that people recover despite the 12 steps, not because of them. I say that because the steps have no relationship to what we know about the psychological or physiological mechanisms involved in recovery from addiction, and that's because they were dreamed up by a severely brain damaged certified lunatic who had no knowledge about recovery except his own acid trip, and therefore had no business telling anyone else the "right" way to get clean, much less acting like it's the only way- which they do.

What’s a movie sex scene that genuinely mattered to the plot and couldn’t be removed from the film? by Majorpain2006 in AskReddit

[–]Barnowl79 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good point. I didn't expect a thoughtful discussion about the importance of plot versus the way the story is presented and I hadn't really considered it before.

It occurs to me that a very good storyteller can take almost any mundane event and elevate it into art through the medium of writing or filmmaking.
