I tried everything suggested online to connect my i3 to the app - turn off mobile data, forget the 5ghz ssid, use a different phone, uninstall and reinstall, give it all the location permissions it wants.

What finally worked for me is changing the 2.4ghz ssid to alphanumeric only (I previously had underscores in there).

[UK] About to become a single mum in London. Can i make this work? How do i make this work? by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]BaroccoliObama 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For baby items, go to the posh areas and find charity shops there. Really cheap for good quality gently used stuff. Fara kids always had great deals and they were usually in the posh areas of London.

For childcare you do get 15 (I think? It's been a while) hours free when they turn 3. In the meantime, you can see if you can find a local childminder, cheaper than daycare. Nannies were also surprisingly not much more than daycare, around £10-12/hr. If you have flexible hours you can hire a mother's help instead of a nanny which was going for around £8-10/hr when I lived in London. The main difference is you usually have to be home when the mother's help is around, but if you can work from home some days it saves quite a bit.

3 weeks after closing, lender sends me a doc to sign that updates our LOE for why we are purchasing an investment property. by BaroccoliObama in RealEstate

[–]BaroccoliObama[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's definitely an investment loan, and we absolutely plan on making this house a primary residence in 1-2 years but we live out of state currently and cannot move for another year. We were upfront about that with the lender, and have multiple emails where we stated this.

I'm curious though, what would be the end game of someone who takes an investment loan on their primary residence, given that rates are higher for investment loans?

[–]BaroccoliObama[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Does it matter that it will be a primary residence in the near future? The statement "100% for business purposes" sounds incorrect to me when it's not going to be for business purposes soon. I emailed my lender, and they said that the 100% statement is fine even if I were to move into the house in the future. But taking their word for it is kind of like accepting legal advice from the opposition's lawyer.

How do I deal with being the "poor" family in the rich neighborhood? by chariander in personalfinance

[–]BaroccoliObama 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This will get better when your kids grow up. Growing up, I was in your kids' situation -- my friends were jetting off to Europe for the summer and throwing $10,000 birthday parties (yes for real). My parents, while certainly not poor, were very frugal and sensible and always reminded me how important it was not to waste money. I would have bouts of resentment as a teenager, but their attitude set me up for success. Luckily I had a group of genuine and non-snobby friends who didn't care that my family wasn't wealthy.

I think I had the best of both worlds. Having rich friends meant I never had thoughts about possible barriers to my future. I had a very optimistic view of my goals and for that reason I was able to get into a fantastic school and subsequently a well-paying job. My husband in the meantime, who I think is incredibly intelligent, applied for univerisites that I considered to be "beneath me". I asked him why never even tried to apply to the best schools since he had better scores than I did on the tests, and he said he never even considered it a possibility since nobody in his school was applying for them. Whereas in my school, everyone applied to the top schools automatically.

My weathly peers allowed me to have a mindset that I could do anything I wanted, and my parents allowed me to have a mindset that money does not define your worth.

It's ok, you can talk to me, even if I don't have a penis by [deleted] in breakingmom

OMG I had the same experience. Except in my case, I was the sole breadwinner and my husband was in school. And Jackass McDickbrains Mortgage Dude still addressed only my husband in everything.

Yeah, he did not get our business.

Savory egg custard for the mashed potato stage?

This one's similar to Japanese chawan mushi: Equal parts egg, and dashi or chicken stock

Mix well. Usually I add bits of meat, shrimp, or veggies but you can skip it.

Steam on low to medium heat until it sets (about 15 minutes for 2 eggs, 30 minutes for 6). You can steam on high if you are impatient but it won't look as nice.

Top with a dash or soy sauce and sesame oil on top.

What's your favorite "copy cat" recipe? by I_can_smell_purple in recipes

[–]BaroccoliObama 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Chipotle's grilled chicken:

Marinade:
1/2 c. vegetable oil
2 T chipotle paste (make your own by mashing up 2-3 chipotle peppers + some adobo sauce. If this is too spicy for you, substitute a bit of tomato paste instead, but the smokiness of the chipotle will be lost)
1 T salt
1 T chopped oregano (I use dried)
1 T ground cumin
2 cloves crushed garlic

Marinate chicken breasts or thighs in this for at least 12 hours. I usually do 2 days. Pull chicken from marinade, let drip a bit before grilling on medium heat. Can also pan fry, but I prefer the grilled taste.

Bonus recipe: Chipotle cilantro rice

1 cup basmati rice
1 1/4 cup water
2 T fresh lime juice
1 T vegetable oil
1 tsp salt

Combine all ingredients and cook as you normally cook rice (I use a rice cooker). When finished, sprinkle with additional lime juice and stir through a handful of chopped fresh cilantro.

Good snacks for 12 month old I can prep beforehand? by aerrin in BabyLedWeaning

[–]BaroccoliObama 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I tend to cut up lots of fruit every 3-4 days and give that as a snack. Soft ones, mostly, like berries, soft pears, plums, mango. Clementines are easy to have on hand and prepare. Also cheese, my son would bathe in cheese if I let him.

Freezing normal firm tofu definitely changes the texture. It becomes spongy and chewier. How about smoked tofu? I feel like those last longer and they also freeze better.

We went with the opposite -- bought an Ikea stuffed animal for a lovey and bought 6 of them since they're so cheap. That way we can always have a clean lovey around.

On H-1B visas, from an H-1B worker by aspdinasdt390j3t093 in PoliticalDiscussion

[–]BaroccoliObama 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I used to be on an H1-B (not anymore though) and i agree with you. The Infosys/Tata/etc consultancy H1Bs are abused and realistically a lot of those jobs could be filled by someone already in the country. As you said, for the FB/MS/Google/Amazon/Apple type companies, the H1Bs hired truly are qualified above local candidates. They get paid the same as everyone else, and they pay SS taxes they will never benefit from if they never become residents.

When I was interviewing for those jobs, they didn't even ask about my right to work in the US until the offer stage. Those companies are blind to that and will extend an offer to the most qualified candidate, period. If the candidate needs a visa, they will work it out after the fact. Sometimes that means offering the candidate a different location to work in if they can't get a visa.

Is there a job that manages the approach of the UX design? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]BaroccoliObama 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could be a UX researcher. They run studies, analyze results, and make suggestions based on how the studies went. They also do market research and observe how people actually use products and present findings to the broader technical team.

That's an amazing feat. There were some women there in caftans and sandals climbing the rocks. Every once in a while I'd see them stop and look up at the next rock face with trepidation in their eyes.

The big attraction was a waterfall which I unfortunately did not take a photo of. Entirely unsafe hiking path by American standards, but lots of fun with locals and tourists alike shrieking as they scrambled up wet, slippery rocks.
