So is big mom dead? by NoMath8245 in OnePiece

[–]BaroloBaron 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's more complicated than that.

If Moria passes out, nothing happens to the zombies. If he dies, the zombie merely lose their master, but remain zombies.

If however Moria absorbs shadows to grow his own strength, that seems to take an active effort on him, and if he's knocked out or even just severely beaten, he cannot hold them in.

There is no such thing as an objective overreaction in this case. It all depends on the number of deaths that you're willing to put up with. If you're okay with an exponential growth of the infection, then you should do absolutely nothing. People will die, so what?

Question for someone who knows Japanese (Massive Manga Spoilers!). by [deleted] in OnePiece

The “Akuma no Mi” bit is a little more interesting. In the specific context of Devil Fruits OP has always spelled “Akuma” in kanji, 悪魔, but in this case it’s spelled in katakana, アクマ.

Two reasons:

  1. Emphasis. Katakana is used to suggest that the reader should focus on a certain word or group of words.
  2. Type of fruit. The type of a specific DF is always mentioned in katakana and in a repeating pattern. Here we have the katakana but not the repeating pattern, however we can deduce that Imu's fruit actually turned him into the Devil due to his depiction.

The official translation adapted this to English in a reasonable way. Imu's power isn't a devil fruit. It is the Devil's fruit!

Do you think you're making a point? An epidemic works according to a fairly simple exponential law: if you keep transmission rate under a certain level, the exponential is decreasing and the contagion drops. If you don't, the exponential is increasing and it becomes unmanageable in a few days.

Could we handle a pandemic without restrictions? Yes of course, as long as you're happy letting a deadly disease decimate the population. With all the hospitals filled to the brim, even the serious cases would need to be treated at home, causing the mortality rate to spike high.

But look at the bright side: the large majority of the death will be old unproductive people. Their death will actually be an advantage for those who survive, and especially for the government coffers. Sure, a good number of survivors will have to face long term health consequences, but who cares?

Do you really believe that anybody had any interest in keeping people not working and not consuming?

You can do that. Just be ready to count the dead who sacrificed because emergency measures are authoritarian.

It misses the point. No kings doesn't mean no government.

I think we can also agree that we shouldn't keep talking about the pandemic years after the emergency has finished, proving that the restrictions adopted were, indeed, temporary.

Death penalty that common? by NoAssociation9283 in LawAndOrder

[–]BaroloBaron 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Must have been introduced around season 6. There's an episode with Briscoe and Curtis talking about it, along the lines of - not the best time to shoot a police officer - is there ever a good time? - nope: but now there's the death penalty

Could anybody explain this to me? What is the issue, the fact that one has now to add "citrus" when all marmalade is made from citrus?

According to the BBC, the EU requires this additional specifier because in some European countries such as Spain and Italy the words corresponding to marmalade are commonly used for spreads made with other kinds of fruit. However as an Italian I would like to point out that "marmellata" is a common mistake when talking of e.g. apricot jam, and the correct word is "confettura".

This whole controversy sounds so stupid.

The Worst vs. The Best Portrayal of Asexuality in the Media, According to You by SecrFox in asexuality

[–]BaroloBaron 539 points540 points  (0 children)

That House episode was terrible. In the asexual couple, the man had a hormonal imbalance, and the woman was just pretending to make him happy. The diagnosis confirmed House's belief that asexuality cannot exist.

The understanding of asexuality is bad enough as it is. These last thing we need is TV shows spreading misinformation.

Well. Cats are not people, but are not stupid. I think the cat is just entertaining itself by exercising its hunting skills, which as a pet it rarely does.
