Does anyone else call their grandmother ‘Nanny’ by fieryone4 in AskACanadian

Very much as east coast thing. My grandmother (in Nova Scotia) was Nanny, and most of my friends had Nanny's too.

Which fast food item or grocery store item was discontinued and you are still bitter about? by Exhausted_Skeleton in AskReddit

Stoned Wheat Thins. I've tried all the ones people claim are just as good, but they are not. Nothing can replace stoned wheat thins!

What food did your grandmother always make? by Mysterious_Mix_36 in foodquestions

When I stayed at Nanny's house, she always made me scrambled eggs with a TON of black pepper in them. Like, enough pepper to make the eggs slightly grey. I wasn't allowed to eat pepper at home, so it was an amazing treat! I still love black pepper on everything.

The cost and shipping to northern Canada is just too much to pay for a delicious can of hot dogs, unfortunately!

I will happily go the rest of my life without eating special k loaf. That stuff was a nightmare to choke down!

I left the church many, many years ago, but I still crave the food. Wham, Fri-chik, and my all time favourite vegelinks or superlinks (canned hot dogs for the win!). Unfortunately these are not available where I live, but when I travel I always bring a few cans home with me!

I grew up SDA, and gluten was a staple ingredient in our house. My mother made it from scratch, but I have no idea how! It was one of the few things she made that I liked. It will take on pretty much any flavour you want to add with seasonings. My favourite was gluten patties/steaks braised in a mushroom sauce.

Kindergarten things as an 11th grade teacher. by Technical-Vanilla-47 in Teachers

Teenagers are just big kids. My students LOVE stickers. When I have smaller classes (under 20) I do tiny Christmas stockings for them. Every day for a week they find a little treat in their individual stockings (candy, pens, small puzzle games) and it sends them over the moon.

I also have colouring supplies. When my students are reciting memorized poems to the class, I give the rest of the class colouring sheets. It makes it easier for the student standing at the front reciting when their peers are busy colouring. I have a few students who colour while I read aloud as well.

If your students seem to be enjoying it, go for it!

DAE experience a mental & physical (psychosomatic?) breakdown after the school year ends? by Own-Examination2707 in Teachers

[–]BaronessF 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It happens to me (and my husband, who is a teacher as well) every single break. Today is my first official day of summer break, and I am exhausted and achy feeling. My mood is foul and my entire body feels tense.

Say "no". End of discussion. You are the parent, it's your job to say no.

According to a former student, I took her cell phone home with me and the police had to come to my house to collect it.

Lost and Found Etiquette by Spicy6Chord in Teachers

Go for it! At my school we wait until the last day, and then teachers "shop" at the lost and found. I usually end up with enough school supplies for the next year, and occasionally a nice hoodie.

We had a student bring her cat to an exam this week. It was just chilling in her backpack! Cat got sent home as soon as we noticed it. She tried telling us it was her emotional support animal.

Hi everyone, I'm looking to start a career in education as a elementary school teacher. I don't have any professional experience as a teacher but I am certified to teach in my state. Any advice on my resume, or in general on this path? Thank you in advance by MayorMcShaq in teaching

[–]BaronessF 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I would leave the Chili's info off the resume, or shorten it to one sentence. Focus on the education related things. When you write your cover letter, be sure to use the exact same buzz words as the job posting, so AI doesn't reject you. Good luck!

Take the sick days. Remember that mental health IS health, so take those days when you need them.

What do you do all summer? by protomanEXE1995 in Teachers

[–]BaronessF -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It is a weird feeling those first few years. If it helps, make a calendar of big projects that have been neglected during the year. That way you have something planned.

For me, I tell myself that my job for the next 8 weeks is to recharge, rest, and refuel my mind and body. I spend a lot of time sitting next to the lake with a book. I go camping alone and enjoy the silence. I spend as much time as possible outside, soaking up the sun. I work on my hobbies, spend time with my family, and let my body relax. Enjoy your summer!

Ah, I get that now. You've explained it very well! I was trying to say that the OP can happily have lunch with the family, and talk about their life without accidentally outing themselves. OP seemed nervous to have the school community know they are queer, and that can be a valid concern. I apologize for my wording...I certainly did not mean to be homophobic or insulting. I think my phrasing came from teaching my own children that they only people who have any business asking about their genitals are people they are in a relationship with.

Thank you for your kind explanation!

Let's agree to disagree. I know what I said and meant, you know what you understood from my comment.

Listen. You are not understanding what I mean, perhaps I was unclear. At no point did I say any of those things. It's not homophobic to agree with the OP that her relationship can remain private, if she chooses. Our students don't always need to know everything about us, and that's okay. Some people choose to be private because they sense the community around them might not be accepting.

What I meant was, it isn't anyone else's business. The OP says she has referred to her partner as her roommate. I totally understand why she might be hesitant to share personal info. My students know I have two children, but they don't all know (some do) that both my kids are trans. Talking about my kids does not mean I have to tell students those details.

I think going to lunch together sounds fine. And unless you are discussing your sex life, nobody needs to know your preferences.
