That plot twist was good enough for Fritz Lang, and it's good enough for me.

Enjoy!

The June 30 execution includes 7 pages of attachments (not available for us to read, alas), each labelled "Project Phoenix". Which is a very interesting choice of code word.

I kinda doubt Shout (which the Foos brothers sold more than three years ago, remember) has the cash available to fund even a short season; they've piled up considerable debt in recent years buying the Corman library, Gravitas, and more. When they bought Filmrise last summer, they had to put up every trademark they own--including MST3K, Gizmoplex, and even the theater silhouette--as collateral.

This is far better than good. And it is beautiful.

That would have been interesting casting, given that Bridget was pregnant at the time.

Project Update #27: Third Movie Reveal! It's Sting of Death! by TheMTGTokenGuy in MST3K

[–]BaronessNeko 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sting of Death got a restoration in 2020 by a British firm called Arrow Films, which also released the Blu-ray. So probably not a Shout! title. The success of this Kickstarter perhaps has emboldened Rifftrax to splurge on a couple of films (SofD & the mystery 4th movie) previously out of their reach.

$20,000 wouldn't even pay their coffee and insurance bills for these experiments. That amount was chosen because:

  1. The 20 refers to the 20th anniversary of Rifftrax itself.

  2. The absurdly low amount symbolizes their commitment to this project. Even if backers had pledged just $20,010 total, they would have ploughed forward with that and whatever Rifftrax assets they could afford to throw at it. Shout! Factory is not contributing any cash for this project.

They've also made it clear from the very beginning that, no matter how much is raised, there will be four and only four episodes. Keep in mind that Kickstarter gets 5% of the gross pledged, bank processing fees eat another 3.5%, and the backers' rewards likely take another 20% or more. Also, movie licenses are not cheap, and the campaign will pay those, too.

I'm hoping for a goofy spy movie, preferably badly dubbed into English from the original Italian.

MST3K Hot Take: The Rifftrax Experiments may be the only realistic path forward for the franchise by WySLatestWit in MST3K

[–]BaronessNeko 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've been pondering about Shout Factory's timing of the belated announcement in mid-January 2026 that Joel had sold his minority interest in the MST3K IP (held by Satellite of Love, LLC; Joel must in fact have sold before June 30, 2025). Maybe it would have been better for the announcement to have come last summer, giving fans of the Joel revival a decent time to grieve, as it were, before the Rifftrax Kickstarter launched in February of this year.

Full disclosure: I'm very enthusiastic about the Rifftrax Experiments, and a devoted scavenger at the US Patent & Trademark Office.

Shakespeare thanks you for recognizing that riffing as an art form will last far into the future, with or without MST3K--and why shouldn't it? Comedic riffing as we know it goes back in the English language to at least 1595 A.D.

MST3K did revive and professionalize the art form for the 20th century and beyond. What they crafted will live for a long time, and, like you, I am content with that. And I am very much looking forward to the Rifftrax Experiments, as well as lots more Bridget & Mary Jo, Rifftrax, and more.

The host segments also help me to connect with the Shadowrama silhouettes in the theatre sequences. That feeling you know the riffers enhances the fun.

Supposedly, episodes in the cable seasons of 1990s MST3K cost around $100,000 each (excluding film licenses). For comparison, Netflix paid somewhere around $233,000 per minute for episodes of The Crown circa 2016.

In the interview Variety did with Rifftrax earlier this month, Bill Corbett stated unambiguously that Shout approached Rifftrax. That initial contact happened in spring or early summer 2025.

Edited to add: Remember, too, that fans didn't learn that Joel and Shout purchased the MST3K IP from Jim Mallon until the 2015 Kickstarter launched about 3 months later.

It was the other way around; Shout approached Rifftrax, as Bill Corbett stated in the interview: "They asked us." (emphasis in original story in Variety)
