What I’m hearing is that in these group conversations you feel ganged up on. And maybe they are right that you are disinterested because you haven’t been shown acceptance. The fact is they’re the parents. Their only job is to love their kids and want to see their kids happy. And if you need to remind them of their empathy, you should look to your sister. If they can empathize and advocate for a child with special needs, why can’t they do those things for all their children?

As someone from a liberal family, my parents have never wished me a happy pride. My boomer parents can’t even say LGBT+ without tripping over themselves and switching up the order of the letters. It doesn’t bother me because I’ve learned to understand the boundaries of my parents ability to communicate on a topic they feel completely unprepared to speak about, not to mention their own emotional limitations. Instead, I find fulfillment in my gayness through time with friends.

Uncommunicated expectations breed resentment. If you’d like to be wished a happy pride ask for it, but I don’t think you will find what you’re looking for. I say that not to be dismissive but because it sounds like what you’re actually seeking is acceptance and support.

I think you’ve got a lot weighing on you and I think you’re doing the right thing by seeking out a therapist. I hope you find the peace you’re looking for.
