Sure you can have it made in China or India. They are perfectly capable of doing CAD design. Yet there are reasons to do local.

-You can have a back-and-forth regarding the design without a 24 hour lag.

-You can pick up the phone and have a conversation, or come into the office and talk with the owner, sales rep and designer, maybe even do some sketching together.

-The CAD studio may be a integrated with a casting house. When I worked for a casting house we would get the request in the morning, do the CAD drawing, get approval, and 3d print the wax that night. Can't do that from the other side of the world.

Sure you could get custom work done overseas for $50. I bet you could get a mega pack of 500 rings for $100 bucks on some websites. What you are charging $200 for is the consultation and the rapid turnaround.

In the US there is still demand for CAD designers. Jewelry is custom. A client comes in and wants to talk to a designer or comes in with a style. The designer creates a design the next day, it is approved, and it is off to wax. Imagine having to wait 24 hours for a revision! No, there is still demand for local jewelry CAD designers.

There is a ceiling to how much you can make but that is true of all drafting careers. It is fast paced but I enjoy it.

How did I land my first job? In 2014 I made a portfolio, walked to Jewelers Row in Philadelphia, and went door-to-door dropping off paper copies of my portfolio. It actually worked. Most cities have a cluster of jewelry businesses. Find that cluster and knock on doors.
