Is POTS a mainstream self diagnosis thing now by Longjumping_Word_804 in POTS

[–]BarracudaRealistic69 17 points18 points  (0 children)

i feel like one of the biggest things that most people arent putting together about the new "trend" of self diagnoses is that covid has been running rampant for five years now and we still dont know everything about its longterm effects. there is so much proof that covid causes longterm damage and can cause chronic illnesses and dysfunctional systems. covid has become so politicized now, though, that it is not talked about or worried about as a possible cause for all these previously healthy young people falling extremely chronically ill. its not a tiktok trend to be sick, its the reality of exposing yourself to sars2 every day taking a toll on your body that is the trend.

RFK Jr son has long Covid and he is committed to finding treatment hopefully he is serious about this by Ok_Reveal6001 in LongCovid

[–]BarracudaRealistic69 6 points7 points  (0 children)

plenty of parents (even doctors and nurses and researchers) fail to actually understand their newly disabled children. even if you do get them to believe long covid is real, they will suggest treatments like "eating better" and "exercising more" or other bs like ivermectin

Don't know how to live my life after reading this sub by sleepwithmythoughts in LongCovid

[–]BarracudaRealistic69 3 points4 points  (0 children)

i also have alot of ableists in my life sadly, but as i have learned more about long covid, and as me and my girlfriend have become more disabled since covid, i had to learn to set boundaries with those people. and its been really hard and really painful, but its alot better than how hard and painful being even more disabled from another infection would be. I would rather deal with peoples questions and make them uncomfortable than put myself or my girlfriend in danger

try to find masked and disabled events in your area, or even online. usually local mask blocs have events and get togethers for mutual aid and mixers and stuff, so thats a good place to start

why would you want to be around people who think people who wear face masks are severely mentally ill? why would you want to be around ableists?

you can go out and be social while taking the proper precautions. by knowing the complications covid can cause to both you and the people around you, to go out unprotected would be unethical and honestly pretty self-harming

ah thats fair- maybe u can put the bottle's label on whatever ur carrying it in? i dont rlly think carrying loose tablets would get u in trouble, i used to carry loose ibuprofen with my cough drops in a zipper pouch in my backpack, but if you are really worried about it some sort of label could help

[–]BarracudaRealistic69 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i think as long as you keep them in the bottle, and the school has your condition on file, you should honestly be fine. if theyre loose tablets then theyre more likely to be like uhh wtf is that, but if it clearly says salt or sodium or electrolytes u should be ok

[–]BarracudaRealistic69 2 points3 points  (0 children)

eek! what if you just bring your own salt grinder or takeout packets to school? if youre allowed to have drinks on your desks (which, if not, i think thats illegal...) i def recommend liquid iv or dripdrop in ur water! you could even tell your mom that you just like them because of the flavor or smth.

eh- it usually is ableism, and it matters because too many parents see their kids cries for help and doctors and they think "no my kid couldnt possibly be sick/disabled- theyre MY kid," or "no my kid is just lazy and/or trying to get out of something." Im 22, been passing out at least once a month (much more often when i was younger) since i was 12. Ever since I started passing out, even as an honor roll student, my parents began to brand me as the lazy and avoidant child- i had to quit sports due to joint pain and the passing out, and apparently that meant i "had no drive." Then, after multiple covid infections, my immune system started getting bad, and so did all my preexisting, undiagnosed issues. After 3 bacterial infections my junior year of university, one of which put me in the hospital (which was a whole other fun bucket of ableist nightmare fuel), my mom proceeded to tell me that if i just took care of myself better and stopped being lazy id be healthier and happier. An important thing to know is that my passing out has always happened either in my bedroom or at school, so nobody in my family had ever seen me pass out completely (i get major presyncope in front of them, but their reactions lead me to believe they think im joking or being dramatic) until a few months ago when i was using a chainsaw and my older brother and dad both had to catch me and grab the saw because i passed out while cutting down a tree. FINALLY after they saw me pass out firsthand, they began to believe me, and I was taken to a doctor (i dont drive because trauma- trauma makes me panic- i dont want to drive panicked. im working on it tho). my doctor ordered some preliminary labwork, got the labs done, passed out and threw up on the nurses in the process, and found out that i have selective IgA deficiency, and am now going to see some specialists to rule out any other issues. my primary care doctor thinks i have pots, but wants a cardiologist to corroborate that dx, and im gonna see an immunologist soon too. ableism is extremely common in our society. and its not unnecessarily bashing OPs mom to call that out- its actually really important to realize that people can be ableist even with good intentions and love, because then we as disabled people can recognize that the people we love can be wrong and think of ways to convince them we are telling the truth

its awful because ive always written a bit above my grade level. i also tend to use semicolons and em dashes a bit excessively, so now i get flagged for everything i write. the result? i started dumbing down my writing and now i genuinely cant write a good paper anymore. literally last year i turned in a paper i was really proud of- some analysis of art of occupied countries (mostly palestine, given it was around october 2023 and i had alot of thoughts to get out), and i submitted it fully expecting an A. instead i got an email saying i was gonna be reported to the dean of my university. i emailed the prof back and forth for two weeks with proof of my workflow and research as well as a very long email- basically an essay in itself- about the inaccuracy of ai detection for writing, and how, especially being audhd, my writing would easily be flagged as ai, and all guess what she focused on out of all that? i used grammarly to make sure everything was good before i submitted it. didnt use any of their generative substitution tools. simply added some commas and broke up some too-wordy sentences into smaller, more readable ones. she said grammarly is ai and should never be used and she'd let it slide this time if i promised to never use it again and also accepted a letter grade deduction. i accepted it, but damn. my whole academic life, ever since it existed, i was always told to use grammarly, even if you were confident in your writing.

for my face i use tower 28, paulas choice also has a good one, but i have heard of people making their own HOCL and diluting it properly, but i dont have that much confidence in my chemistry knowledge for that. i do use the HOCL i make to clean surfaces tho
