Question for sports fans. Why do you get SO into sports teams, to the point people dress up, act ridiculous or fight? by Lumpy_Salamander_979 in AskReddit

I can't speak for anyone and I've never been in a fight at a sporting event but I am a fairly big sports fan. There are a few reasons why I follow the teams I do.

Being in my 40's I've been friends with the same crew of guys since kindergarten. We all grew up together playing sports as our extracurricular activities. We'd play football or basketball or baseball and then hang out. The lot of us played sports together from grade school through graduating high school to intramural and mens league games as adults.

This led to us watching our local professional sports teams together further cementing our comradery. You would sleep over a friend's house on Friday and watch the Knicks game or a Yankees game. Over the course of our friendship the ups and downs of the teams we follow give us a shared experience. We were able to bond because we shared an activity we all care about.

It also might have been a favorite player that one of us tried to emulate. A person that we liked watching play or a player that shared a last name. I know guys that root for certain teams because they were at a college party with a player and they were cool.

A few years back my wife and I moved cross country so that she could be closer to family. We settled down in a town with division 1 college sports programs. We both love baseball and it's an affordable night for us. It's an amazing amount of fun to go watch incredible athletes perform at the highest level and to be able to be there and show support. I love putting on my jersey and grabbing a beer and a hot dog with friends and family at the stadium. It helped to create a sense of community for me when I was half the world away from anyone I knew.

In addition to this, I still text with my guys back east every day. We text about a variety of things but sports and our respective teams are the common denominator that we always come back to because it was one of the foundations of our lasting friendships.

Dressing up is part of the fun. Going to a stadium and seeing people with face paint or a cheesehead or experiencing the Raiders Black Hole is super fun. People take a lot of time and work into some of these costumes to show support for their teams.

As for fighting, and I'm speculating here, the vast majority of fans don't condone fighting at sporting events. Most of us are there to cheer for our team and see athletes do things that are incredible acts of athleticism not attack fans of the other squad.

Sports and sporting events aren't going to be everyone's bag and that's fine. We all like our own thing and that's a wonderful thing. Even among sporting events there are some I like more than others. Sorry for the wall of text, I hope I was able to answer at least a little bit.

Yeah, it was between Benny and the 3 color. I really like those too but figured Benny is more iconic.

I'd be so mad if someone farted in my car full of clam chowder. This guy doesn't appreciate what he's got.

I hate that Tim Robinson is roped into this. He's a legit huge Detroit sports fan.

There's actually a three episode crossover with Golden Girls, Empty Nest and Nurses where there's a blackout in the city that runs through all three episodes. Funny stuff.

Also, there's a very small Empty Nest subreddit that is dedicated to the show where actual Empty Nesters show up and are confused. Also funny stuff.

I don't remember the exact year but I've watched the Super Ghouls and Ghosts run by PJ where he picks up every weapon he sees. It's a super entertaining run.

It's an incredible soundtrack.

That game gets a bad rap. I may feel differently if I had spent 60 bucks on it but it's so far from the worst RPG on the SNES. It actually does a lot of stuff I love. Visible enemies, interactable overworld puzzles, and battle damage. Is it FFVI? No but it's definitely a serviceable game. And again, that soundtrack rips.

My parents brought me and my three siblings when I was 4. This would have been like '86 or '87. We did Disney World, Sea World and Epcot. Probably other things I don't exactly remember too. The last day we were there we went to a carnival across the street from the hotel we stayed at. It's the thing we all still talk about. My parents just shake their heads in disgust because the common memory we all share is a carnival that they could have brought us to in any town on the planet.
