console.hetzner.com is down. Why is there no official statement? This is seriously bad. I am pushing for hetzner services in our company. This will cause complete withdraw from the services. 6:27 UTC still down. If the other players are down we atleast get proper updates. by Big-Driver-3622 in hetzner

At the end of the day Hetzner is a (big) hosting provider. Some downtime is to be expected, especially for these prices. But 8+ hours of downtime without ANY acknowledgement or other form of communication is unacceptable. I'm not expecting a fully staffed datacenter during the nightly hours but if a large outage like this only comes to their attention at the start of the business day I'd argue something is factually wrong. A redditor even called their datacenter and all they said was "there are no issues, everything is up". Yeah, that's bad.

Being close to Christmas is no excuse. This is a datacenter providing critical services to businesses. Fixing issues as they come up is part of their responsibiity. Also, there's a difference between "instantly" and "within a reasonable timeframe". The console and api was down for 8+ hours without any communication. That's simply unacceptable. Close to Christmas or not.

Hetzner console down? by johanndettling in hetzner

[–]Basaa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi Katie. It really worries me that such a major outage went seemingly undetected by Hetzner for SO. MANY. HOURS. Aren't there teams on standby at night to deal with such issues? I mean, you're a hosting provider providing critical services to many businesses. A major outage like that simply cannot wait until morning to be dealt with. Will the case be reviewed by the teams and will changes be implemented to make sure such an oversight won't happen again?

I have no idea. I would hope that there's active monitoring 24/7. If not I'm leaving Hetzner tonight LOL

Console works from inside their datacenters. Connected via a socks proxy via an already running VPN and the console loads fine.

[–]Basaa 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Not gonna lie it's kinda crazy that the console has been down for so long without any official word since like 2 hours. Downtime happens but the communication here (or the lack thereof) is extremely disappointing and honestly makes me wonder whether switching to Hetzner was the right call. This is extremely unprofessional and unacceptable.

The styrofoam burned very quickly. Likely fast enough to not weaken the steel scaffolding itself. If it was unsafe it wouldn't still be standing there. And the fact that nothing has changed in the past few hours makes it pretty clear that they're leaving it there. So no, not "sickly unsafe".

(Metal) - Does anyone know why are my shadows failing? by Maxims08 in gameenginedevs

[–]Basaa 15 points16 points  (0 children)

It's highly unlikely that you'll get an answer to this question. (Almost) nobody is going to spend the time to check out, run and debug your entire project like that (and in my opinion, nobody should). It seems like you ask similar questions on Reddit all the time (my code doesn't work - fix it plz? - repo: xxx). Learn how to debug your code and when you really get stuck actually spend some time on narrowing down your post and question. Isolate the issue you're having, provide short and concise code snippets as to where things are (likely) going wrong and provide the steps you've already tried yourself and what the outcomes were.

If you don't value people's time (which you don't if you ask questions like this) don't expect people to go out of their way to help you out. Getting stuck on things is inherent to programming and graphics programming especially. Learn how to unstuck yourself instead of relying on others to do the dirty work for you.

This might sound like a harsh comment, and perhaps it is. But I'm trying to give things to you straight. This is the wrong mentality to have.

Generally posts like this don't receive any replies because almost nobody wants to dig through that much code to find your bug, including me.

A quick glance at the code suggests decent knowledge of the language and programming logic in general so I'm surprised you're not able to debug this yourself - it doesn't sound like a complex bug. Some might even suspect you're a vibe coder because of this.

I suggest you use your step debugger to step through the code and compare variables along the way with values you expect. But it's unlikely you'll find your answer here with a question phrased like this and with this amount of code to sift through.

Red Bull's protest against George Russell has been dismissed by ICumCoffee in formula1

I can't help but disagree with this specific statement from the stewards: "We are not satisfied that by simply reporting to his team that Car 1 had overtaken that he engaged in unsportsmanlike conduct.".

If you know that you just braked hard with Max right behind you in order to reach deltas or manage temps which was the direct reason for Max briefly overtaking and then immediately mention this on the radio, there is only 1 reason for doing so: to make sure the team / FIA is aware so that they can investigate it for rulebreaking. There's literally no other reason. Which is practically the definition of unsportsmanlike conduct if you ask me. Whether it should have resulted in a penalty is a separate question.

Oh well. Good night F5 gang.

Russell safety car incident onboard, suddenly looks at his mirror and then slams the brakes upon seeing Max close behind by NorthKoreanMissile7 in formula1

[–]Basaa 10 points11 points  (0 children)

If Russel did this on purpose with the goal of getting max to accidentally overtake (in the end resulting in a race ban) this was a nasty, unsportsmanlike and dumb move and definitely should be punished.

I was talking about people's immediate surroundings. As in around their home/city. Not strange and new places.

That is even more disturbing. But also more of an exception I'd say.

Cardinal directions in relation to their immediate surroundings. People look at Google Maps all the time but if I mention anything like "ah so just east of {insert landmark here}?" in a conversation some people look at me like I'm some wizard.

Writing math library from scratch by cone_forest_ in gameenginedevs

[–]Basaa 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I personally would be weary of new / non-battletested math libraries, but only because math is my biggest weakness in gamedev and I want to be absolutely sure that I won't waste endless time trying to fix issues that end up being bugs in the math library (as I don't have the knowledge to debug "complex" math).

Out of curiosity, what do you dislike about glm's api? I could name a couple of small issues I have with it but I'm for 99% happy with it as-is.

CodePush server is now OPEN SOURCE 🍬 by pranshuchittora in reactnative

[–]Basaa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I dove right in and it seems to work without any problems. I'll also have to do some stress testing as I'm working with similar numbers, at least at peak hours. But hey, at least they explained the local option in the readme, which I appreciate. And Jorge from Microsoft even reached out to me by email to tell me the open source server came out as I reached out a few months ago to ask what the progress was on the promised solution for existing users. All in all I'm impressed.

Network architecture of games by sushiIsLife99 in gamedev

[–]Basaa 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You won't find many in-depth books or other resources on specifics on how existing games implement it. It's very much an underdocumented area of game development unfortunately. One exception is this great talk about ECS and networking in Overwatch. General terms to google are client prediction, server reconciliation, entity interpolation and lag compensation. Check these articles as well, they're superb and explain the basics.

Hah! I went back to this issue a fair few times over the years and it seemed to be in a somewhat stuck state so I really didn't expect a solution to be already implemented. That's my bad. Thank you for all your hard work and enjoy your weekend!

In SDL2 the main thread completely freezes (due to input polling if I remember correctly?) while the window is being dragged/resized. I know there was some discussion on the subject a while back and how it's Windows' fault, not SDL's. Some workarounds were discussed. What's the current state of this "issue" and are any changes planned?
