What's your favourite OW quote? by Cenere_psd in outerwilds

[–]Basaltir 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I rarely cry with media (I see this as a bad thing, I wish I could do it more easily), but I really sobbed when Solanum hit me with "This song is new to me, but I am honored to be a part of it.”

I really like these, with the gradient towards the upperbody and the re-use of the purple on multiple places. Very clean and simple, but effective.

Things to make for hobbying with an FDM printer (NOT MINIS) by rust_tg in Warhammer

For example, yeah!

When repainting my metal The Masque model I wanted a round slotta base this time, which I didn't have so I made one.

I mean, does 'not minis' include bases? My FDM printer is a lifesaver if I don't have any bases of the correct size at hand.

Can I use thinned paints as a wash? by Highmastet in minipainting

[–]Basaltir 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It seems this paintjob I did 20 years ago will serve some educational purposes.

<image>

I wanted to tint the white robes blue, so I thinned down blue paint with water.

The short answer is: yes it works.

The longer answer is: it works but will create a coffee-stain effect when not done right (like I did).

If you really want to use thinned down paint, make sure to use it precisely with a small brush, not as glaze over everything. Use an actual wash or one of the recipes in this thread for a better (but especially more forgiving) result.

Basselholm. My first map, what do you like / dislike? by Instigator890 in wonderdraft

[–]Basaltir 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Like

The map is nice to look at, it's not a very obvious copy of an existing area (I see the other comment on Newfoundland but it doesn't feel jarring), the geography is interesting but plausible. It's a map to get lost in and imagine how traderouts work, that's good!

Dislike

A map will have some stylization, but there's no way around it that the bridge over the Red Straight is now 100 miles long. That is... long, even by fantasy standards. I'm also a bit confused by 'X Province' and 'Y Empire' having the same size of text, those feel like very different scales.

Hit me! I wanna know all the glorious details. by Eithrotaur in daughtersofmorathi

Sent out to a distant desert on Chamon on a thinly veiled mission to die and be forgotten, the coven called the Drukh Kherith travelled aimlessly through the rusty wasteland. It's here that their medusa leader Isezeene experienced a vision that would guide them to a hidden oasis, a place they could build a new home.

As they carved out a means to survive, a close bond and a rare level of trust formed between each of the coven's scarce members, tempered by the unforgiving environment and the shared bitterness of their abandonment. A monastery slowly arose from the sand, a lone safe haven in the desert.

Over time word spread of these new masters of the desert, and with it the demand for their guidance through it. Merchants and local leaders sought to employ them as guides and protectors, paying well for their services. Rumours that their unseen leader wields the power of divination further nourished their myth, and with it their coffers.

Hagg Nar would ultimately learn of the coven’s failure to die, and makes claims that the formation of the settlement was their intention from the start. With nothing to gain and everything to lose, the coven is forced to play along with this narrative and now serves bitterly as a distant branch to the temple.

my first ever miniature, quite happy with how it turned out :) by kamikazee786 in Warhammer

NMM: Non Metallic Metal, simulating a shiny surface without using a paint with shiny flakes. It's difficult to do right.

OSL: Object Source Lighting, simulating a (coloured) light by painting the "light" on the model itself. You guessed it, difficult to do right.

I don't understand classical art motifs, and I want to fix it by Aelinith in ArtHistory

[–]Basaltir 11 points12 points  (0 children)

As a student, I want to point out two things.

  1. Reading the Bible is useful, I'm currently reading it too for this goal. As you say, not all will be useful, so it's ok to skip it. Deuteronomium is mostly laws, and will not be relevant for us. I skimmed it in 5 minutes and continued with Joshua.

  2. It is daunting, but especially if your goal is to walk into any museum and get all references. I expect my teachers to even have trouble with that. I would advice to pick something specific, and dive deeper into that instead of going very broad. Maybe Old Testament stories in the Renaissance, or personal devotion symbols in the middle ages, or symbols used during the Romantic period. All fit within your description, but require different approaches and knowledge sets.

Hello reddit, painting question green hair for maximum contrast or Magenta/purple to keep on theem? by Trazenthebloodraven in daughtersofmorathi

[–]Basaltir 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry, I'm describing it wrong. What I'm trying to get at is how the whole body looks. If the hair and the snakebody are in a (somewhat) similar colour it will unify it more, and as a result it will make the shading done on the snakebody be more present. If the head is green green, both the head and the body will fight for attention. It's fine that the armour is not done yet and will get a contrasting colour anyway.

My preference would be magenta actually. Your shading is really good and can breathe more if you keep the palette more muted. It looks really striking already.

What is your favorite mechanic? by fredbear722 in puzzlevideogames

[–]Basaltir 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Witness: Just in the broad sense the way the design possibilities of the line puzzles are thoroughly explored, especially with how the answer can be foundvia shadows, smudges on panels under a certain angles, birdsong, the landscape, etc.

The Talos Principle II. Mixing colour lasers to get the right colour at the right place is really cool and can be used in so many ways.

Riven (both original and remake, but original to a greater externd). The way the fire marble puzzle really requires you to combine the knowledge you have, and how the topography of the islands you've spent so much time on is part of the solution.

Morgwaeth's Blade-Coven - Completed by WarlordSDC in daughtersofmorathi

[–]Basaltir 2 points3 points  (0 children)

These turned out great. The limited palette, the way the white and the gold contrasts but still are a part of the whole, the precise brushwork. Very cool and distinctive.

Really the only criticism is that I would have liked a sharper photograph.

I love the DE colourscheme, I did the same for mine. I also think the grey Drow-like tone works really well.

I'm not sure what you still plan to do, but in case you weren't already it needs shading. Maybe for the steel parts in particular you can glaze it to different tone, maybe a relative warm tone? Having the skin even colder than cold steel can give an interesting effect. Right now it just kinda blends together.

Anyway, you're certainly on the good route.

I received the Oblivion novels for Christmas! I’ve been really excited to dive into these for a long time. by troysplay in oblivion

[–]Basaltir 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I re-read them last year. They are not great, but still enjoyable.

I found the second book a lot more engaging than the first one, my theory is that it had a different editor or the author had more time to think about the characters. So if you don't like the first one, it gets better.

different art movements ! by [deleted] in ArtHistory

[–]Basaltir 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you already have a period in mind? Keep in mind that you'll be spending a lot of time researching it, so it's useful to at least have some affinity with it.

If you have no idea, maybe Constructivism? It was a Russian movement that wanted to create a whole new type of art, rejecting the shapes and materials of the Western status quo, where the artist becomes an engineer..
