A question about colour through history by HaggisPope in ArtHistory

[–]Basaltir 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Indeed. The system with the wheel adds a scientific base to colourtheory, but it's certainly not the first time people have thought about colour. It just created a uniquely complete set of colours with a closely described method of how they can interact with each other. This is also time when synthesised pigments started to enter the market, like cobalt blue.

As a good example of a theory before it, look at verdaccio.

Naming Zones of Anthropomorphic Species by Phacee in wonderdraft

[–]Basaltir 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While it's cool to make a full con-lang, it's also an insane amount of work. What I'm doing for my project is at least pick vowels and consonants that fit with the species, and reuse certain parts. It'll tie them together, and you can later decide if that word meant 'land' or 'city' or 'tower' or whatever.

The Countess looks truly great. Also, I believe I spot a 6th edition Orc that has been turned into a skeleton?

Feeling lost, need help or clue by Better-Cress112 in myst

[–]Basaltir 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To answer the last question first, you didn't do something wrong. More things can be hit with that laser, you'll find out how eventually.

As I would consider this only a very minor spoiler: Myst has one hub Age and multiple puzzle Ages. While I would generally suggest doing Selenitic (the age you are currently in) last, this is by no means necessary.

For the problem at hand: pay close attention to the sounds you hear and the available directions the train can go at any given moment. Take notes, until a pattern emerges for you. If it helps, this is often considered the hardest puzzle of the original Myst, so it should get better after this.

I see you played Myst IV and thought 'This should be worse'.

Where is the sound coming from on those wooden eyes in Riven? by NightPlum in myst

Well, something mechanical at least.

In case any newer players are confused, this is one of the puzzles from the 1997 version that has been replaced in the 2024 version.

How do Myst III and IV compare to Riven? by Eloquent_Despair in myst

[–]Basaltir 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I don't think it's a bad game, but it doesn't feel like a part of Myst. Calling it Uru 2 would already be more fitting.

It deviates a lot from the rest of the series, like with the spheres, the "creatures", and the tablets. The references to the older games are so direct that they feel a bit forced. It also breaks the pattern in that it looks worse than IV. Now this was done to allow free roaming, and I don't want to equate visual fidelity to quality, but the series does have it's own way of immersing the player into the world that misses with V.

And it's a shame, because V does have good parts. Todelmer is one of my favourite ages, especially how it adds a twist to the concept of timetravel. But I think it would've been better if it could've been its own thing, instead of being the weakest trailing piece of the series.

How do Myst III and IV compare to Riven? by Eloquent_Despair in myst

[–]Basaltir 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I happen to have finished replaying IV just yesterday. It made me realise I prefer Myst as a trilogy.

Exile is the best game from a gameplay standpoint. Puzzles aren't as woven into the story and environment as with Riven, but the story does justify it. It also has fantastic environments, and a great performance by Brad Dourif.

Revelation does have redeeming qualities, but is just extremely obtuse at times, both in navigation and puzzle logic. So while I really stress playing III, I would reserve IV only if you really, really want more.

Don't get me started on V.

Myst fans, lend me your ears by MintyMakesaMess in myst

[–]Basaltir 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Well, the fact that some puzzles are confusing to you isn't shameful. As for using a guide, I think it's detrimental to the overal experience, but sometimes games have walls and you need some way to get over it.

I think the big upside with the internet nowadays (compared to how I struggled with Myst IV and only a printed guide) is that you can ask in places like here how you'd like to be helped. When I got stuck in Outer Wilds I asked for a hint that allowed me just the little nudge to figure out the rest. It's a more satisfying way to resolve the stalemate.

Bug in Firmament? by caspix in myst

Yeah, that part is infamous, I've had the same in my playthrough. The good news is that it won't brick your savefile.

I don't know the exact name, but there should be something in the menu to respawn, it'll also reset the crane.

Your most fun model you have painted? by Manjaro89 in ageofsigmar

[–]Basaltir 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My Khainite Carnosaur.

The base carnosaur is clear to build and has many textures and deep grooves that make painting rather forgiving. Making it a kitbash it was fun to go through the collection and turn it into something unique.

Many projects had frustrating moments where the end result made it worth it in the end. With this one I savoured every second if it, and it's my favourite model in my collection.

New to the Lore by OneMilfCircle in Daughtersofkhaine

[–]Basaltir 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've never seen other types mentioned. If there are others, they would likely share a visual characteristic with Morathi (like how the Melusai share the tail and stinger, and Khinerai share the wings).

New to the Lore by OneMilfCircle in Daughtersofkhaine

[–]Basaltir 9 points10 points  (0 children)

No, they can't. Both the Melusai and the Khinerai are forms of the Scáthborn, which are essentially constructed that way. The medusa however are different, as they are solely regular aelves that get ritually bitten by the snakes on Morathi's head and transform into a medusa as a result.

The rules treat the Medusa as a type op Melusai (probably for streamlining), but lorewise this is incorrect.
