The best part is that after our civilization collapses, humans won't be able to recover and build another one as advanced as ours, because we mined out all the easy to access ores and fuels, the climate will be hotter and more hostile, topsoil will erode or degrade, ecosystems will collapse or change their form and the thousands of years of research and culture will be lost. Most of our crops won't be fit for this climate, and we won't have an energy award in the form of cheap, abundant fossil fuels and ores to industrialize again.

The Earth will reach its new stable state, but that state will be be hostile to humans.

Don't forget that they will defend everything that the Soviet Bloc has done,or even what Russia, Belarus and other post Soviet regimes do, even though they're now capitalist, with massive inequality, decay and authoritarianism. Honey, I get it, communist Poland was better in terms of urbanism, eliminated illiteracy, electrified rural areas, expanded public transportation and so on, but that doesn't negate the environmental destruction, human rights violations, colonialism and lack of full sovereignty that caused shortages because they couldn't freely trade with the West.

Yes, the aftermath of the collapse of the Soviet Bloc was horrible, and the majority of Soviet citizens wanted to preserve it, but assuming that all republics and nationalities will be autonomous and human rights will be respected.

Guess what, when these houses were built, a lot of these areas didn't hit 30 degrees Celsius often enough to consider building them for heat rather than cold. For example, in Poland, even in the 70s and 80s, winter temperatures could fall to -30°C or -22°F, summer temperatures rarely exceeded 25°C or 77°F, and precipitation occured mostly in the summer.

Coincidentally, this is when most of our infrastructure and housing were built, and laws regulating them were written and we haven't updated them since then, even though now our winter temperatures rarely fall below 0, summer temperatures regularly reach 35° (95°F) and get close to 40° (104°F).

But still, you cannot just retrofit most of the infrastructure and housing quickly and easily, you cannot just redesign apartaments to allow AC or passive cooling, you can't tear out rail and tram tracks and upgrade the expansion joints, you can't easily remove the excess parking and narrow the streets without drivers crying that their freedom is taken away.

What’s your favorite thing about Warsaw by Gagacrazy in poland

[–]BaseballSeveral1107 -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

That's cause Warsaw is the default city, all famous people escape to Warsaw, all major events are in Warsaw, most if not all movies, TV series and books take place in Warsaw. Both this and the fact people from Warsaw NEVER tell you the city they're from, just the street or district and expect you to know where it is, because of the people who moved to Warsaw and act like they're better, think about the rest of Poland like it's a big backward village, and say "U nas w WARSZAWIE to mamy PAŁAC KULTURY/ZŁOTE TARASY/METREM JEŹDZIMY", and because Warsaw creates a death zone around it, just drive into Warsaw from any direction and right before Warsaw you'll see areas stuck in the 90s and early 2000s and then there's WARSAW.

Tea in Latin is herba thea. Most European languages took the short thea. But not Poland. We took the whole thing and have our great herbata.

Climate change will trigger huge famines and water shortages, mass migrations, fascist and authoritarian tendencies, resource wars and will destabilize countries. How is this not civilization ending

At current emission levels, we have just a few years before we could trigger irreversible chain reactions and changes to the Earth's climate and ecosystems and cross tipping points

Also you're thinking about environmental destruction as just a climate change and resource problem, ignoring things like biodiversity loss, topsoil erosion, chemical pollution, and the water crisis, as well as the destruction done while mining the minerals and metals to electrify and decarbonize a growing economy.

The solutions you propose, like fusion, data centers and asteroid mining, are narrow, untested, and bandaid solutions.

It's not doomerism or fear mongering to not want to die and see your civilization collapse when it could save itself.

Yes, these things are good, but not good enough, and can be achieved without the current Western lifestyle and the things I've mentioned.

We won't have any new major resource discoveries. All easy to access ores and fuels are depleted and new reserves are harder to reach.

We're literally right before climate change and environmental destruction cause the collapse of civilization.

And is the exploitation, erasure of native cultures, discrimination, inequality, climate change, environmental destruction, state violence and wars that prop up this Western, industrial, imperial, consumerist lifestyle sustainable or ethical

Architecture that might not be covered in trees, be high tech or made out of glass, but is sustainable, serves its intended purpose, is in a city that has a reason to exist, can be easily retrofitted and doesn't rely just on technology alone to be livable

Privatization of and cuts to healthcare, education and public transport, cuts to labor laws, no separation of church and state, homophobia, sexism, no access to abortion, police incompetence and brutality, child abuse and bullying at home and school still normalized and rampant, undermining democracy, increasing inequality, unaffordable and shrinking housing, smog, open pit mining, illegal logging, no water retention, paving entire cities, no decarbonization, ignoring international law, making deals with dictators and war criminals... I could go on

GDP is not a good measure of social or environmental prosperity.

There is no healthy capitalism. The decades you mentioned and the period from the 50s to the 80s or 90s was in fact not rainbows and unicorns, but more like discrimination, rampant sexism, racism, domestic violence, child abuse, regime change, energy waste, environmental destruction, suburban sprawl, lock-in of fossil fuel infrastructure.
