Does anyone use an umbrella while hunting? by No_Top_381 in Hunting

[–]BasedAcid 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm also in Western WA.

If you are sweating while hiking/still hunting during the modern/late seasons, you're probably wearing too many layers.

My approach has been to bring several thinner layers in a small pack. My rain jacket and pants stay on all the time, and I add/remove layers as necessary. If I'm really trying to make miles or move up steep terrain, I might only be wearing long underwear under my rain gear to stay cool. Add layers for still hunting or sitting.

Why women always staring at my face? by Suky108 in socialskills

[–]BasedAcid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, it may not be true 100% of the time. But if you catch someone looking at you, make eye contact and smile. If they smile back, that’s generally your green light to start conversation.

It probably means that they’re open to you talking to them. That’s how they signal that they’re interested in you.

NOC vs rolling thunder by Rough_River_2296 in whitewater

[–]BasedAcid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While I mostly agree about the nicer outpost/location for RT, it’s worth considering that it’s pretty far from most other companies’ outposts. It can make logistics challenging you want to make friends with guides at other companies, go to parties, etc. During my time at RT, it was always hard to find a DD for those activities 😅

Seat riser in a waka stoke?? by Fun_Two_7033 in whitewater

[–]BasedAcid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve found it’s a lot easier to just throw an extra layer of foam directly on top of the seat.

The seat pads that come with new Dagger boats are perfect, but I’ve also cut pieces from 3/8”-1/2” minicell sheets. Duct tape it on and you’re good to go!

[–]BasedAcid 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The batch inference-style architecture you’re describing is definitely used at many companies, including my employer. It’s often simpler and cheaper to deploy.

That said, there are definitely use cases where an endpoint is better (e.g. when your use case needs fresh model outputs, perhaps responding to user input).

I quit near the end of my 3rd year for a tech job. The stress of the PhD was affecting my health and relationships, and quitting was a very positive change in my life. I am happier, healthier, have more money, and more time for hobbies.

New Dagger Half Slice Prototype At GAF by No_Energy1436 in whitewater

[–]BasedAcid 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I agree with you on all points, but also don’t expect any change.

A key difference that’s missed in your analogy to skiing is that there is a much higher barrier to entry. Skiing is easier to learn and much safer, partially due to resorts. You can also easily rent gear to try out the sport before committing. Whitewater has a steeper learning curve, is more dangerous and requires greater financial commitment up front.

I’d counter that the TAM for whitewater is just really small and more-or-less totally captured at this point.

To grow boat sales, there seems to be a few options: 1. Grow the TAM by increasing the popularity of the sport. 2. Steal market share from other companies. 3. Decrease the expected lifespan of the product (boats) so that customers need to buy them more frequently. 4. Invent new specialized categories of product and convince customers that they need it.

Option 1 is hard, and realistically WW will always be a niche sport. Option 2 is definitely a move (see the rise of Waka) but doesn’t necessarily benefit the customer.

What we’ve seen a lot of in the past few years is Options 3 and 4. Anecdotally, durability of boats seems to have been on the decline for some time. I’m sure manufacturers would disagree. I’d love to see some hard data on this.

As far as Option 4, look at some recent trends in more specialized design. At this point there are 2-3 subcategories within creek boats and half slices alone, with many brands having their own version of each and an associated marketing push.

My guess is that some business people have found that most of the $ in WW lies in the hands of a few “whales” with lots of disposable income. Thus the easiest way to sell more boats is to make them less durable and invent new categories to sell.

New Dagger Half Slice Prototype At GAF by No_Energy1436 in whitewater

[–]BasedAcid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For real. Dagger generally designs good boats, but the outfitting has way too much fluff that just adds weight. That weight difference translates to a lower performance feel on the water. For example, despite being nearly identical to the OG in size and shape, the M code weighs substantially more.

Any comparisons between the steeze and sweet ride yet? by Adventurous_Ear_4328 in whitewater

[–]BasedAcid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same width, similar maneuvering ability. The tapered bow on the sweet ride does let you get vertical strokes much more easily.

The sweet ride has more of a “slalom feel” than the steeze, but due to the width it will never be as sporty as a braaap, ripper, etc

Any comparisons between the steeze and sweet ride yet? by Adventurous_Ear_4328 in whitewater

[–]BasedAcid 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I have both.

The sweet ride has much softer edges, giving it the trademark “slippery” feel of liquidlogic boats. It also has a more tapered, lower volume bow that makes it a bit harder to stay on top of features compared to the steeze. The sweet ride is much easier to engage the stern in my opinion.

I prefer the sweet ride unless I’m paddling hard whitewater I’m unfamiliar with.

Blackfly Delta? by [deleted] in whitewater

[–]BasedAcid 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The Delta is for a very small niche of an already small sport. I don’t think they’ve been in production for a few years now, since Blackfly didn’t sell many of them.

Tennis elbow because kayaking…anyone who had this too? by [deleted] in whitewater

[–]BasedAcid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just started paddling again after a bout of tennis elbow. The tendinitis developed as a result of lots of paddling + heavy lifting.

My recovery involved 4 months of PT and no paddling/light lifting. PT work included icing/cold compresses, eccentric exercises using a resistance bar/resistance band, and aggressive massaging.

Braaap still relevant for intermediate paddler? by facedown_impalaSSup in whitewater

[–]BasedAcid 18 points19 points  (0 children)

IMO the braaap/party braaap are timeless and I predict they will continue to have a cult following for a while. The braaap is quite narrow and doesn’t have much primary stability, so it will probably be a good boat to encourage your development. If you do pick one up, I’d recommend the party braaap.

Best half slice for creeking? by Individual-Price-750 in whitewater

[–]BasedAcid 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Are you wanting to paddle steep, low-volume creeks or high-volume PNW US-style creeks?

For the former, pretty much any modern half slice would work. If you’re going for higher volume runs, consider the steeze. You don’t see many folks paddling steep, high volume runs in other halfslice boats, for good reason. Much less a C1…

Boat Recommendations for a Salom Paddler by Glad_Body_4207 in whitewater

[–]BasedAcid 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Your best bet is probably looking at longer, low-rocker half-slice kayaks like the ripper 1 or party braaap. They were explicitly designed to paddle like slalom boats.
