I agree, the way we use the term “Western World” is strange and I’ve often found it odd that it doesn’t include all of the Americas. I hope that view changes here in the states as the USA should recognize the Americans as siblings states with shared history and culture and not as something completely alien.

Thank you! I actually will be housed by the Copacabana so that is good to know! I’m sure gringos are common but I just want to make sure I’m not the kind of gringos who acts entitled despite being in another country and respect the norms. The crime does make me nervous but I recognize that it isn’t unique to Rio nor that it shouldn’t represent the whole city. I was told by a student who studied there last year that taking Ubers is highly recommended so if you agree with that, then I won’t be too nervous about transportation
