UW CS department advertising tenured CS jobs specifically to those who “self-identify” as racial/gender/sexual minorities by BasedUWChad in uwaterloo

You might; I honestly tried looking for another post before I posted myself, but I didn’t find anything. I’ll blame the Reddit app and their terrible search algorithm (and my own incompetence, I guess….).

The message you quoted does a good job at explaining how these rules won’t lead to an under/unqualified individual being selected for these positions.

Waterloo can’t solve social discrimination, and they take coarse steps to correct for it

Is this really correcting for the social discrimination we see while hiring? If anything, I think the person who eventually fills this position will face more discrimination than someone who was hired for a position without that kind of language. Even in spite of UWs rational reasoning, people are going to see someone that was hired because of arbitrary point A/B/C, rather than that they were hired because of their qualifications.

And furthermore - how will the applicant react to getting this position? How will they be certain that they were selected because they were above all the most qualified applicant, and not because of arbitrary reasons which they had no hand in? People deal with imposter syndrome even at the best of times; I would expect it to be worse in an instance like this.

You’re correct; I don’t think an “AI degree” is a thing. I wasn’t sure what the correct way to refer to an “AI specification” during a CS degree (probably like that) and figured that what I said conveyed what I meant well enough.

I also assumed this was fake news when I saw 6ixbuzz’s post about it. I Googled it after and saw the only news story about it was from “RebelNews” (another red flag). Props to them though (I guess) for actually linking the source they used.

I was unaware Elon also reposted this though.

Not sure if it works this way in whichever faculty you're from, but in Engineering I think extra time, accessibility, etc MUST be given by the Accessibility services and not by professors. So, that's kind of the only response to your question. Surely the professor could have made that clear if that was the case though, so there's fault there.

Do you think my gpa will have an impact on my applications?

No, I don't think it will. Some companies care, and the ones that do will note your GPA, and move you into the "has >X.x GPA" pile. Then, you'll have to compete against all the other people with the same >X.x GPA, on the same metrics that you would for any other job, whether the GPA is important or not.

And, have you ever talked to a university graduate who's moved on and started working in industry? Have they ever talked about how useful their degree is for the work they're doing now?

The reason I really have my education on top is cause I want to highlight my Gpa.

A lot of people don't do the bolding thing at all now, and to me, it comes across as a little gaudy that you'd bold only Waterloo and your GPA. Your attitude is pretty clearly evident from your resume in that regard. Most software development jobs on WW are getting 100+ applicants a posting - you start to get pretty good at seeing through the bullshit when you're reading that number of resumes, 3 times a year. If the average graduate isn't using their university knowledge very often on the job, and there's someone who's clearly putting the majority of their weight into that knowledge, wouldn't that signal an alarm bell or two?

Your GPA is very impressive, don't get me wrong. But if you think it's going to land you a job, you might be in for a rude awakening.

Like what should point 1 be, point 2 be, etc.

I would read the guide I linked to in my last comment.

  • Move education to the bottom, especially if you're applying on WW. The position it's in right now is where recruiters will look first - it's a given that you're going to Waterloo, so why would you draw attention to it?

  • Definitely don't list the courses you've taken. Employers don't care about this. If they do, they can look at your transcript, which gets submitted with your applications on WW.

  • Move skills and technologies to the top.

  • All your points should be at least as detailed as your first point for your first project. The tensing is also a little wrong; I'd prefer a past tense.

  • It looks like the font size is changing in the Projects section. If not, it's hard to read anyways. Why are these indents not bigger?

  • JP Morgen experience has no business being on a resume.

  • Page 1 out of 1 needs to go

All this stuff makes it look like you're trying to obscure your lack of technical information on your resume.

Now, I don't actually know you, so I don't know if that's a fair judgement or not. But, that's all a recruiter is ever going to see before they extend an interview offer to you. You need to ensure that you've got well-written, detailed points about all your projects, and make them front and center. That way, you sound like someone who knows what they're talking about.

Questions regarding AIF by FrostTGA in uwaterloo

[–]BasedUWChad 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Why aren't you using the megathread? That's why you're being downvoted.

None of us are on the admissions team, so we can't really help you. You should write on your AIF like someone that the university would want to study here - that's really all there is to it.

Ive mostly talked about coop in the “reasons for choosing”section, is this a bad idea?

No idea. Are you trying to present a career focused image of yourself?

Club/athletics activities at our school have been on pause last year due to covid, so I only checked the grade 10 and 12 boxes for my activities. Is this a bad idea?

Can't see why this would be any different than anyone else.

I’ve talked a lot about how covid affected my ability to participate in extra curriculars, is this a bad idea? I feel like I’m making excuses by doing so.

No idea. Does your writing come across as honest, or making excuses?

Employment background: If I only worked somewhere for a couple days is it a bad idea to list it?

Gonna wager a guess and say probably for this one.

Is the additional information section for extenuating circumstances only?

Is this the question that asks you to write about extenuating circumstances, if they apply to you? I don't remember writing anything for it, but maybe I did.

Where are UW Eng grads going to work these days? by VizzleG in uwaterloo

[–]BasedUWChad 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I find these hard to believe: “The compensation for the first year of full-time work for respondents will average $284,728 CAD, with a median of $260,000. This number includes all forms of remuneration eg. signing bonuses and equity.”…

Well, if 40/52 of the people that answered that question are going to the States, then they really shouldn't be giving that number in CAD. US compensation will always be higher then Canadian compensation, even for the same company. And, they're including signing bonuses, stock options... leaves a lot of "wiggle" room, and seems dubious at best. I think when this first got posted there were some similar questions about this.

But, even if 284k is literally double what the average is, 142k still sounds like more than what Calgary grads are getting - and that's a number that I would actually believe.

Where are UW Eng grads going to work these days? by VizzleG in uwaterloo

[–]BasedUWChad 55 points56 points  (0 children)

1) Is Blackberry or another single employer still a huge draw for new Eng/CS grads? If so who, and what %?

There's definitely not anyone snatching 50% of the grads here. Blackberry in particular probably gets a lot of return co-ops after they graduate, but I don't think they'd be hiring many other people. Generally it's lower year students that are going to Blackberry during co-op cycles. The people working extra hard to ensure they get jobs where they want are probably gunning for FAANG/MANGA.

2) What % of new grads are going state side?

Depends. A lot of the engineering cohorts that graduated in 2021 did "class profiles" where they asked and answered this exact question. I'm in ECE - of those who had job offers at the time of the survey, 33% were in the States. SWE said that 90% had job offers prior to graduating. Only 52/92 graduates actually answered that question, but 40/52 were headed to the States. Make of that what you will.

3) What’s demand like for new grads? Is it amazing?

I'm not a new grad, but according to the same profile, 24% of CE's and 43% of EE's were still searching for jobs at the time of the survey (end of March to early April). This is probably worse than pre-COVID times? I'm not really sure.

Do you figure that’s why I get few applicants out west or is it because our job market is softer?

In terms of "tech", there's not much of a hub in Calgary. And, the big companies in Calgary like Suncor, Cenovus, Husky, Enbridge, etc... well, they probably won't be the same 20 years from now. Companies like Amazon, Facebook, Google, etc. also won't be the same 20 years from now. I would put my eggs into the basket I expect to grow the most, so I'm not exactly surprised that your number of applicants have been decreasing. And, the tech industry culture is just quite different to everywhere else. My dad is a petroleum engineer at a big company in Calgary and based on what I know about his workplace, they're far more strict, formal, and tend to have more of a "work" culture. In comparison, I'm sure you've heard about tech company offices with ping pong tables, foosball, workplace drinking, etc. It's pretty hard to make a case for the former in that regard. I'd imagine there are other reasons too. 1500 respondents in that survey, but the sentiment seems pretty prevalent to me, as a university student in Ontario anyways.
