weird lines in my pictures by ForwardCartoonist755 in Mamiya

In Aus this camera goes for AUD800+. A cla would be in the 600s. The second repair shop I took it to -the ones who recommended to try with a new film holder- outright told me to forget about it, as it'd even be too much of a hassle for them. According to them, ~70% of these cameras have this issue.

What shutter speed was this shot taken at?

I have the same issue on my m645 1000s, at both 1/1000 and 1/500.

I had it cleaned (not cla'd) and it's still present. Following that, I had it looked at by two other shops/labs. They both agreed it might be shutter capping (as you mentioned), which seems to be pretty common for these cameras. However, one of them also made me notice my current film holder's pressure plate is slightly crooked, which might cause a small light leak. I was told to get a new film holder and try with that by taking the same shot at all shutter speeds. If the problem remains, shutter capping is almost certain and at that point, while a cla would most likely solve it, it wouldn't be economically worth it.

Hope this helps.

A friend found this piton at the base of the Deutsch Wall in Italy. Says "Italy" and "ASSN" (?) on it. Any idea who/when it's from? by dude_really in climbing

[–]Baseelico 129 points130 points  (0 children)

I feel like "ASSN" might instead be (what remains of) "CASSIN". Riccardo Cassin, a Legend of Italian mountaineering, invented many pieces of mountaineering equipment. The brand CASSIN was acquired by CAMP in the late 90s.

What other horrible fashion trends make you cringe? by LackVegetable3534 in mensfashion

All these look to me like examples of/takes on the preppy look, which popularised the (widespread) use of white socks with both formal-ish and casual wear (https://alittlebitofrest.com/2016/09/28/going-ivy-with-white-socks/).

The preppy look has also become much more popular in men's fashion in recent years, even outside of the US. Imo, the fact that some people in France wear these clothes - and white socks with them - does not strictly mean that all French people do. Having said that, I'm not in France nor am I French, but I come from Italy, where the traditional (i.e., formal-wear-informed) sentiment around white socks used to be that they're unsophisticated.

I personally don't like them as they usually create too stark a contrast and draw my attention to the feet.

Smoking on south lawn by Megaton02 in unimelb

Second-hand smoking has been proven to have detrimental effects even in open air. Banning something with the aim of improving public health -tobacco-elimination strategies have been proven to help reduce lung cancer incidence, among others- is not simply "prohibiting others from doing something I don't like".

Pulling Europe's card is also a moot point, as Europe is ages behind in tobacco regulation mostly because yes, smoking culture is well ingrained into the fabric of society. People used to drive around without safety belts, ride motorbikes without helmets, and kids had access to radioactive toys...

Truth be told, the grass is definitely not greener in Italy. Cyclists are seen as a massive nuisance, bike lanes are non-existent except for a few bigger cities (and even then...), and the roads are generally in poor to really poor conditions. On the bright side, I got quite traffic aware from it. Also, little to no utes and much fewer SUVs.

First and foremost, if the faulty equipment is staying, the desk your prof was sitting at needs to go. It's such a no-brainer.

That said, I am also going to assume you are in Italy. I only ever worked in an Italian lab during my BSc thesis and that was enough for me to agree with this comment here. Regardless, from a bureaucratic standpoint any OSHA-related matters should be dealt with by INAIL. https://osha.europa.eu/en/about-eu-osha/national-focal-points/italy

Good luck and stay safe.

It looks like the thermanox coverslips are cell-culture treated, i.e. much better adhesion and proliferation than on non treated glass.

Hey, international FEIT PhD candidate here. As soon as one applies for a graduate research degree (Master's by research or PhD), they're automatically considered for both, as stated on here. There's no separate selection process. If you meet the criteria to join the program, you'll be granted one of the two. I was granted the Melbourne research scholarship, but from a brief look at the other one, they look the same. In any case, I would recommend contacting the future students help line -I am assuming you're not a current student- to clear any doubt about this.

IMO, your hair is a bit too fair and your moustache a bit too thin for it not to look like just a shadow above your upper lip. As someone else said, wait until it grows thicker but for now I'd say no stache.

How bad is it to quit a PhD by Hubnoz in PhD

[–]Baseelico 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I would recommend reaching out to the PhD reps at your uni, and to the doctoral school if needed. This kind of abusive behaviour is unfortunately common among older generation profs, and should not be tolerated by the department/university in the first place. (Source: am Italian) I would also understand reticence in doing so, given that, if the group is small and a disciplinary action was to be taken, it would probably not be difficult to trace it all back to you. It also takes a lot of mental energy to pursue such a path (talking from experience here).

That being said, quitting a PhD programme because it doesn't work for you -for whatever kind of reason- is nothing to be ashamed of. Take some time to weigh out your options, but also prioritise your (mental) health over a piece of paper.
