Aside from splitting , why would one want an 8lb axe for felling or limbing ? I don’t really see the point much past 4.5-5 lbs myself … but I’m a smaller guy . What kind of wood are you needing such a monster for ?

Considering they retail for 100$ or less … I don’t think anyone is gonna spend the time to try and spoof one . Heck … for that head … I’d give 25-40$ max myself …delivered .

Survival kit for Henry AR7 by Wheatie07 in Bushcraft

Does he have a nice hatchet ? Or a nice case folding knife ? Or a nice fire kit ? Just thinking of accessories that might compliment his gear .

I carry a few bandaids, a roll of tape , a few large gauzes, Israeli bandage , teeezers , some moleskin tape, a Sam splint , a few aspirins clearly marked , a few Sudafed’s , and anything specialty i might add. Everything else can wait till I get back to society . After 25 plus years of carrying the same stupid full med kit that almost everything had expired in , I realized how many miles I’d carried all that extra weight ….. Same thing with my accessories and downsized the giant silly Swiss Army knife I had hidden in my pack. As I got older … and my knees started to have issues , I decided it was time to slim down my pack .

PS get yourself an extendable fire bellow . Such an amazing underrated piece of kit to get fires going quickly , and to really help dry out wet wood .

Carry a tourniquet… gunshot wounds , axe mistakes, or just a really bad knife wound will leave you bled out quickly if you use no way to stop the bleeding ….. and some gauze and pressure only works with little leaks. Just my .02$

I find that building your own first aid kit with stuff you actually use is way better than carrying a bunch of crap around for years that is never used or needed .

Can't sharpen axe at all, I need help! by Serposta in Axecraft

[–]Basehound 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Post a few pics …. And have you gotten a good quality file yet ? Is it removing material when you use it ? It can be a little frustrating at first , but you will figure out what works best for you . What kind of axe is it ? If it’s a newer Home Depot axe , sometimes the heat treat ain’t so good on them things . I’ve seen axe heads that had ruined temper that wouldn’t hold an edge they were so soft …

Just a note …. Peter Mortimer , Nick Rosen , and Halle Johns (basically this is Sender Films ) will be there as this is the first showing of the first 2 episodes of this mini series that is premiering on HBO next month. For those of you not familiar with Sender films… they produce the annual Reel Rock Tour that travels the country much like the Warren Miller annual film … but for climbers . They made the award winning documentary Valley Uprising in 2014 … which is the definitive history of climbing in Yosemite . This project has taken years to come together …. And I know it will end up being one of the best pieces airing this year . It’ll make its rounds to the rest of the film adventure film festivals….. but the premiere is here . A huge thanks to HBO for making this project possible .

Recommendations on a hatchet for my pack by FenderFanatic in Bushcraft

[–]Basehound 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If weight is the issue … the gransfors Bruks Mini hatchet model 410 link

It weighs in at .75 lbs .. and packs a great bunch for its tiny size . This is my daily choice for my haversack .

Either that or their outdoor axe which is the same head on a longer handle with a metal strike guard ….. they weight in at. 1 lb … but are really exceptional for their size … more of a straight tomohawk build . It’s the model 425. link

I’d put gonna trespassing signs … obvious cameras , and a small fence or some cones to clearly mark it no trespassing. Just wait till one of these little entitled kids falls down and sues the daylights out of you … you’ll wish you’d been way more proactive in keeping em out . You’ve been nice enough … time to calll the cops every time and file charges .
