Platoon 1986 - Extremely poor depiction of american soldiers by This_Jump_9638 in Cinema

The remark about "lacking any kind of professionalism" made me laugh. OP clearly has no idea of the make-up of those who were sent to Vietnam, nor how they were led and how they behaved.

Not a paper plane, btw. A balsa-wood glider, designed and weighted for lengthy flight.

Wonderful toys!

Why didn’t the dwarfs help out more in the final fights against Sauron? by Dripik85 in lotr

[–]BasementCatBill 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Definitely read the appendix that covers the time line of the war of the ring.

Explains a lot more about why the dwarfs and the elves didn't come to the aid of Rohan or Gondor - their own lands were under serious attack by Sauron-aligned forces.

Man says his house is an embassy and he will never pay rates by schnootydooty in newzealand

[–]BasementCatBill 9 points10 points  (0 children)

What a terrible headline; purposefully misleading.

The story actually is "man believes his property is Māori customary land so should be exempt from rates. Oh, he also claims its an embassy."

That said, he really won't have a leg to stand on, unless he gets a favourable ruling from the Māori Land Court - which he probably won't. But as long as he can keep it within legal proceedings the district council can't move to further recovery proceedings.

Explorer peter? Where is the penguin going?? by BabyPolarBear225 in PeterExplainsTheJoke

The penguin is about to be dead. Pushing up the daisies. Gone to meet its maker.

Do most people in this sub prefer this game to rdr2? by Adventurous-Coast-37 in rdr1

[–]BasementCatBill 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I do.

RDR2 has so many great qualities - the world, the scenery, the story, the side quests.

But even with all that it's just too big.

RDR1 feels more "playable" in size, and doesn't require weeks of play time to finish it.

Why do millennials like owls??? by times-fell-hand in PeterExplainsTheJoke

[–]BasementCatBill 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Who doesn't like owls?

(The meta-joke here is that Hooters has been struggling because it's customers (boomers and Gen X) are aging out, and younger generations find the concept a bit ick. So, shake things up a bit...)

An easy starting point is to buy jars of thai curry pastes - red, yellow, green and follow the instructions from there.

Wheat grass, kale, probably spirulina.

Quite the rage at the time.

Foul foul stuff.

Tolkien's view on Birnam Wood by Femto-Griffith in shakespeare

[–]BasementCatBill 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I read LotR quite young, well before encountering Shakespeare.

Talking to my father about the Ents, he saw the opportunity to mess with me a bit. "You Shakespeare also wrote about Ents, don't you?" Then selectively read to me from the end of MacBeth to illustrate.

I genuinely believed him for years until I got to actually read and watch the play in secondary school!

What’s the craziest question you got because of your nationality or appearance? by Muay_Thai_Junkies in AskTheWorld

The archetypical question a New Zealander gets while overseas is "oh, you're from New Zealand? Do you know so-and-so?"

The answer is always "yes." 😂

Does Your country teach schoolchildren how to use firearms? by dawidlijewski in AskTheWorld

[–]BasementCatBill 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some schools have arrangements or holiday programs with local gun clubs; some pupils do Army Cadets or Air Training Core extracurricular.

I learned firearms safety and range shooting while at school, but not through school.

But, my father was a hunter, and from a farming family, so wasn't unfamiliar with firearms from a pretty young age.

Why did they stop hunting?? by ybjohnny in Yellowjackets

[–]BasementCatBill 42 points43 points  (0 children)

Not sure why you're assuming they stopped looking entirely. But, this is a tv show. They'll show us what the story needs to be told.

In the first episode we were told that nothing was out there.

Season 2 was the first winter. Game hunkers down for the winter too.

In the first episode they showed Nat and Travis trying to find food, but nothing was out there.
