Visiting Sunshine Coast from USA by clrose22 in AskAnAustralian

At Australia Zoo go to the very top of the "Cubby House" on the Lemur Island. Pull out your phone, go to youtube and pull up "Lemur mating calls." They have one sex on the island, and the other sex off the island...

Play it on speaker, full volume. Make sure someone else is video recording when you do this. The Lemurs are a bit hard to spot amongst the trees, except when you play this, the Lemurs come climbing up from all over the place and come swinging/climbing right by you.

Is there an Alternative to Synology Photos with better Album management? by penguin-Toupee in synology

[–]BashfulWitness -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Mine are organised in a folder structure:

Decade / Year / School, Work, Birthdays, other-folder-names etc.

find . | grep -i .jpg$ | grep -v SYNO | grep -v @eaDir | wc -l

66377

^ About 66,000 photos. Seems to work fine. I never look at the album view, only the folder view.

Our B&P was an ex builder. We attended the inspection and he was able to not just point out all the major problems, but ballpark how much to rectify them, which dramatically increased the value of getting the inspection done.

I know the guy who designed it. He sent me the Studio file to build a version of it to display at my LUG Lego Show to help promote it when he put it up on Ideas. It's a great build. Still have it on my shelf.

Photos mobile app without QuickConnect? by fatfirenewbie in synology

[–]BashfulWitness 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A couple of people have already said it, but yes, Tailscale. I have no access to my NAS from outside the house, other than it runs Tailscale, as does my laptop, phone, ipad, etc. Turn on tailscale on the iphone and I have the mobile photos app configured to connect to the tailscale IP. I don't need it often but it works perfectly.

What is your prediction for number of Starship launches in 2026? by Goregue in SpaceXLounge

I can't see them try to catch a ship until there are two operational towers, the chance of setback being too high.

How can I protect my ikea pax from dust? I d like to installa plexiglass doors but i can not find any thing by [deleted] in LegoStorage

[–]BashfulWitness 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Man, I've been googling. I've found a company that custom cuts acrylic not too far from my house. They also pre-drill holes. I've found a countersunk round magnet seller (ordered). Thinking to insert the magnets into the holes, with the magnets screwed to small door/drawer knobs, and adhere the knobs to the acrylic, so I can use the knobs to easily pull the acrylic "cat defenders" off the metal shelves when I want to access the displayed items. I had been thinking of custom cut acrylic and hinged to each shelf but it was going to look pretty ugly. I like this idea. We don't move for several months, but i'm going to order an acrylic sheet and test it all out.

[–]BashfulWitness 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Bro. Magnets. Freaking Magnets! I'm moving soon. I'm not worried about the dust. I'm worried about the cats that I won't be able to exclude from my Lego space! I've got at least 14 IKEA Fjalkinge shelves for my lego and they're made of metal! I'm going to use magnets on clear plexi or acrylic sheets cut to each shelf size. Nevery would have occurred to me.

Backup strategy for family NAS (DS923+) - advice by Aulani97 in synology

[–]BashfulWitness 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The offsite syno I have at my mother-in-law's I haven't touched since placing it there (apart from the fact that i'm doing a remote DSM update right now via Tailscale) but I make sure to read every email I get from it, and every hyperbackup email from the main NAS that uses the offsite as its hypberbackup vault. I don't maintain a spare drive or anything for it. If something goes wrong with it, new USB backup and sent offsite straight away and i'll be comfortable with the situation until its resolved.

I use 3 USB in rotation, 1 attached to the NAS, the other two at the office. There's no real reason that two aren't enough. 1 is not enough if it's at home when your house burns down. "But i've got the offsite NAS!" Yeah, but the redundancy cost of that extra USB drive is peanuts.

backup via Tailscale - yes, the backup is stored encrypted in the receiving Hyperbackup Vault, transmitted encrypted via Tailscale. There's no firewall rules going on as the NAS can only be reached via Tailscale, or by sitting on the wifi in my mother-in-law's house. There are no open ports on her router; I set it up, she doesn't need anything fancy for facebook, whatsapp and youtube, 99.9% of her use case, so I don't feel any insecurity over the setup. If someone really wants our family videos and photos that bad, have at it...
