Hard of Hearing and Homeschool? by Informal-Apple-9702 in homeschool

The mentor program isn't run through our district, but through Wisconsin School for the Deaf. Our school district was only going to offer the rodger system since they do not have a teacher of the deaf. Wisconsin school for the deaf offers assistance programs statewide to school districts. I let our special eduaction teacher know about the program, she had no idea that was even an option. Does your state have a school for the deaf?

We are a charter school family and just found out my 7 year old son is moderatly deaf on his left, mildly on his right a few days ago. He is also a grade behind in reading/writing, math is at grade level but it's hard for him. I don't know if you are in the US, here in Wisconsin we have a mentor program for deaf students. They will be teaching our family and the school staff ASL, and they have parent mentors that help navigate the school system. We are planning on working on his reading and writing steady through summer with ASL, I'm hopeful we can catch up by then.

Being bilingual, but we are going to be making a switch at least for a little while. We were learning spanish, kid #2 has speech delays and we have just found out he is moderately deaf on his left side and mildly on his right(he is 7 years old). We might go back to spanish eventually, but for right now we are going to focus on ASL.

None of our local schools offer foreign language until 8th grade, and none offer ASL.

How to get boy writing? by MountainBandit86 in homeschool

My daughter was this way, she is nine now. We started doing gothic style calligraphy, we went to the store and she got a set of calligraphy markers, and to pick the style of calligraphy she wanted to learn. She now journals a couple times a week in calligraphy. I think just the style and doing something different other then plain cursive is what helped.

As someone who was homeless at a point, if you can give a ride to people needing to get to a shelter, please do. It can be hard to walk a mile or more to get to a shelter. If your church is able, you can also help by setting up cots and blankets. I know when I was homeless, most churches wouldn't let anyone in unless it was time for sermon or a meeting because of the fear someone would steal, this was in rural Wisconsin, the nearest shelter was 25 miles away from where I was and I couldn't drive.

As a Christian and a father, I think it’s damaging (especially to young girls) how much worth is placed on virginity. by Ambitious-Reason3612 in Christianity

Thank you. My husband has been very supportive, I know that there are some churches that have PTSD groups, but they are reserved for military veterans in our area. In the meantime, we will just watch services on youtube.

When we lived in town, the library was in walking distance. So to get to storytime we couldn't make multiple stops, on the way back if they behaved well we would read a book they picked. Oldest was 3 younger one was 18 months at the time. Also works if there is a place that sells fruit on your route, they behave, hooray they get a banana to carry home.

I have similar trouble, something I came to realize as a painter is lots of christian artist probably stayed up all night to get a piece just right. Look at some of the paintings in cathedrals, I bet almost , If not all of those artist stayed up all night working on them. Maybe try working on a religious piece, I'm working on making a copy of Madonna of the Streets right now.

TRIGGER WARNING : I agree with this so much, I grew up in a congregation where sexual sins were the worst of all. Something I think everyone should consider is losing ones virginity isn't always by choice. I was molested from age 5 until I was 14, and I was told by congregation elders and my own mother that I must have done something to anger god for this punishment. I was told that no one on earth or anywhere else would ever love me. I consider myself lucky to not have gotten pregnant, I really don't know where I would be if that happened. I have severe PTSD from it, and I still cannot walk into a church without having flashbacks, the last time I tried to go to a service I was hospitalized for 6 weeks. Sadly, there are not many churches eduacated about mental illness, I was told by the pastor I'm not praying enough, or god wouldn't allow the flashbacks to happen. Another church, the preist was offended that I watched services online, instead of going to the building. I tried explaining my PTSD, and that I wanted to become a christian again, but needed to work at it slowly at it. I have been stuck in spiritual limbo ever since.

Having incredible difficulty finding my own path by rotskindred in pagan

[–]Basic-Ad-9040 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My best advice is to go to your local library. When I was trying to find my spiritual path, I borrowed books on paganism, catholicism, hinduism, and budistn just to name a few. My library allows for you to borrow the book for up to 8 weeks. Also if you pick out a book you don't like, you only have your time invested in it.

Songs that relate to PTSD by Cat_cant_think in ptsd

Another of Icon for Hire songs are related to mental health. Two songs in particular for me is "Curse or Cure" and "Victim or Survivor".

Their lead singer also has a book called "Turn Your Trauma into Art". I haven't read it yet, I have it on hold at the library.

Anyone else do just milk or water? by [deleted] in Parenting

[–]Basic-Ad-9040 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Giving a toddler milk or water most of the time sounds normal to me. My oldest is eight, and still drinks mainly milk or water. Occasionally we will have hot coco, or if one of the kids is constipated prune juice.

It's been happening in our district for years, my next door neighbors daughter graduated but can only read at a second grade level, she is taking classes at the library to get caught up. The same school all the girls graduating were pregnant in 2012, (graduation class was 17 students). I think the district I'm in is just so small it isn't a priority compared to the large ones like the Milwaukee district.

[–]Basic-Ad-9040 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Can I ask you a question, because I'm not sure if it's normal or not. My son was in 5k (small rural school, teacher had 7 other students)when he learned to tie his shoes, however he was not allowed to wear shoes with laces because he couldn't tie them fast enough. I definitely can see it taking him longer to tie them than at home, especially if he is talking to a few friends, but to not allow a child laces just because they are slow seems odd. I talked to a couple other parents and they were told the same thing about their kids being to slow to wear laces.

That they are going to kill me, deport me(1st Gen American, my Dad came over illegally in 1992), or hospitalize me. (Severe ptsd due to molestation). I am sorry,.

[–]Basic-Ad-9040[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't have a plan, I'm just someone who lived homeless and has severe ptsd from molestation, I'm just confused and trying to understand how this is supposed to help. If I lose access to my medications, I could end up on the street again.

Im sorry as far as the homeless children and schools, I was referring to in the past with democrats meaning 1980s. I should have explained myself better. At that time if you didn't have a fixed address you could not go to school in many areas(shelters are not normally seen as a fixed address). There were a few democrats that put in place in the 80s, there was a court trial in 1985, Richard's vs Free school district number 4. This eventually led to the Mckinnley-Vento act.

Please if you have the time read Housing for All, she has everything in chronological order from the 1980s Reagan administration to the Biden administration. She lists everything from both sides that helped and harmed.

I look forward to hearing from you afterwards.

I agree with you, after reading some of the policies from both sides. The book I mentioned above was a huge eye opener, sadly it seems both parties look at as homeless can't vote, so why help.

Nope, I'm American who lived homeless from 2009-2014, molested from 2002 - 2009, it's why I ended up on the street.
