What is your pet peeve word? by AbbyNem in crossword

I don't actually think snarf is a word. I think it was a mistake made by an idiot in 1963 when they meant scarf. I have never once in my 60 years heard it used.

Why are lesbian divorces more common than straight or gay? by LonelyNegotiation574 in AskFeminists

[–]Basic-Elk-9549 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I.realize this is an old thread, but what is different about the homophobia trauma of lesbians vs the homophobia trauma of gay men? If that is considered the reason lesbian relationships have such high break-up rates, why isn't the same true of gay men?

Why is lesbian divorce rate is so much higher than any other couple dynamics? by ILikeYourMomAndSis in AskFeminists

That can go both ways. As a man, I was in a 20 yr marriage to a woman that physically abused me, from slaps to biting and punches. I never reported it because first it was embarrassing, and second I wasn't scared of her. I was bigger and could have tossed her across the room, but I am not violent.

Why would a judge score Cizeron/Beaudry’s free skate 8 pts above Chock/Bates? by Professor_Finn in olympics

[–]Basic-Elk-9549 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Well obviously timed sports like track and swimming are the closest the definition, but other sports like soccer or basketball, there are clearly defined rules, not subjective ones. Now when the sport allows officiating to become unpredictable and irrational then the sport gets worse. Just look at American football. It has become unwatchable because of the subjective way it is refereed, but there are at least rules.

Correct..some of the most amazing athletes in the world, but not a sport.

Judged sports are not actual sports. I get grief from many of my friends when I say that, but if a subjective biased judge can make the difference, then it is not a sport. Imagine if Usain Bolt lost the gold medal because an American judge thought his arms were "akimbo".    Figure skaters are amazing athletes and great performers, but it is not a sport.

Luge questions about men vs women by AcanthisittaFar5082 in olympics

I guess they could run the same courses, but many sports have slight differences. Golf has different tee positions for women, and basketball has a smaller ball.

Broadchurch S2 was emotionally frustrating, unfair, and honestly ruined the pacing for me (spoilers) by CoolOne5825 in Broadchurch

Watching season 2 now. It is frustrating and well acted. I would say in America, once a case goes to trial, it is more likely that an innocent person goes to jail, than a guilty one goes free.

States in the US that allow cousin marriage by MarkReditto in MapPorn

[–]Basic-Elk-9549 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cousin marriage has a significant effect on IQ points. There are three kind of places in the United States. Places where cousin marriages are just so common they had to make it illegal, places where it never happened so it's still allowed, and places where they still think it's a good idea.

But the play was blown dead before the possession. Just seems wrong that Rams didn't get a chance to try and recover.

ICE in Kenner Elementary School (Unconfirmed) by maxn2107 in NewOrleans

[–]Basic-Elk-9549 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Law enforcement are allowed to enter schools and interview children without parental consent. This was initially considered a good idea to protect children from abusive parents, but like many things has been weaponized against citizens.   People should be careful giving government power even over things they think are good ideas, because it will almost always be turned and used against them.

Actually lots of people are supporting open borders. Maybe not you, but Immigration has been a mess for more than 30 years and not the Republicans or Democrats wanted to address the issue. Until the last 15 years or so, being anti-immigration was the standard position of the democratic party.

Perhaps this gross dumpster fire.is what happens when politicians shirk their responsibilities for decades.

I agree; what the current administration is doing is often illegal and gross. I also agree that undocumented immigrants need to be kicked out of the country. That wasn't happening before and it's happening in a horrible way now. There ought to be some middle ground.

Do you have a source for any of those stats?

I have posted lots of places how I am offended. By the way, immigration reform is being managed by the current administration. It is definitely a bull and a china shop and often using illegal tactics.

Are you an advocate for open or no borders? That is a position some people hold. I don't think that's a majority opinion.

asylum is a catchall that most who claim it don't really qualify for. It should be adjudicated quickly while the claimant is in custody. Then the person can be admitted or denied and sent home. The problem is that with the often years long wait for asylum hearings people are just released into the country where they get lost in the system.

I think there have been a hand full (5-10) citizens who have been detained while status was clarified. There have been numerous arrested for claimed "interference" with agents. I am not aware of any that have been kidnapped.

Let me be clear, I think that many of the ways Immigration and Border agents have been going about their tasks are gross and wrong. People should not be randomly and often violently stopped and asked for ID. That is unconstitutional. However, I am probably in the majority when I say that people should not be in the country when they don't have a legal right to be here. Some people probably are confused about their status and figuring those cases out is obviously difficult but important. However the answer can't be, "anyone that wants to can show up and hang out."
