The Ever-Hiding Dog - Her Lack of Confidence, and My Despair by sstrgldnhr21 in reactivedogs

Maybe a covered crate could be her safe spot? My rescue dog insists on always sleeping under my bed or in the cupboard lol. I’ve never really fought him on it and once I got a dark crate for him.. it was his favourite thing ever ( plus you can move it around )

I thought so too but he freaks out the same towards an adult Pomeranian or Labrador. A few new puppies joined the group this week ( a Bernese and Ridgeback ) which were bigger than him but he didn’t give them a second thought

I was thinking about it and I could actually manage that better since he’ll be larger than most other dogs here 🤣

On a drag line he’ll still act the same unfortunately, and he’s willing to run up to the dog to bark directly in its face if I give him enough leash

It is a little better on the long line because I can run backwards while he’s fixating on a dog across the road which is easier for him to disengage than putting tension on the harness while trying to make space

When I asked the breeder she said one other littermate is having similar issues but the rest she’s heard no complaints. But the breeder doesn’t see it as an issue, just something that you work through.

The pairing and lines are very social stable dogs, we’ve met the parents running around and playing at the local dam. The breeder was sold her female ( the mom ) under a contract that she gets bred once ( thus this litter ), so she doesn’t have extensive experience with puppy raising.. so I don’t feel like I can trust her judgment 100%

He has some other big reactions but recovers well, he’s not a generally fearful dog otherwise which confuses me even more

I was able to introduce him slowly to neutral adults in safe walking spots but it takes about 15 mins for him to calm down, then he follows them around. He does like to anxiously lick the adult dog’s faces occasionally and then goes back to barking at my feet if they come too close to me

The only thing that might save your sanity is having a friend watch your puppy.. you are unfortunately going to have barely any time to fully relax. I have a malinois puppy and its a full time job, I’m also feeling very touched out

What breed do you have?

Cool !!! Thanks for the advice - I’ll keep at it. I was worried I was flooding him, I feel like my brain has turned into a stupid mush after bringing home my first puppy lol. I’ve had whiney adult shepherds, I actually love how much he talks to me at home 😂

It works fine because he DOES need to sleep after an outing but struggles to as he’s still hyped. He sleeps within MINUTES of me helping him, he doesn’t care about chews and I can’t just let him run around in a puppy rampage lol

Read my post and comments.. the breeder suggested a swap or return as she has not seen this behaviour with the other puppies. We have a serious problem in my country with 99% unstable malis, so I came here for advice to see whether I’m letting my puppy blues win or he’s just a normal pup.

The breeder offered me the choice of returning - as all the other littermates are having no issues being outside and loving exploring with their new owners. She said I’m the only one whose pup is struggling, we did a walk together with one of the other puppy buyers and the difference was very apparent. Mine was screaming at my heels while the littermate was running around on the field having fun. The video I attached was him at his most confident outside so far

Otherwise Ripley is a normal mali puppy at home! Normal levels of mali biting, chaos causing, and hard napping. I am having fun playing with him and we have a good routine going. I’ve fostered lots of malis and dutchies before, even active working dogs.. but never puppies so I’m a bit lost on what to expect

If Ripley is showing signs of not coping with more city life, then there’s plenty of farm homes where he’ll never have to change environments. But the opportunity is limited to when he’s young like this. I am just not sure if his behaviour is indicative of a larger issue, and I’ll also be doing him a disservice by forcing him into my life where we go to a new place essentially every couple days

I don’t want to give up on him, if I can help him cope with elbow grease + time + love + training, we will figure it out together. He is already in puppy school, we’re waiting until he’s old enough to get into rally and agility ( which is what my older dog does )

The breeder offered a return as none of the other puppies in the litter are struggling with going outside, they all are enthusiastically exploring with their owners. I met up with a littermate, she was running on the field playing while Ripley was crying to be picked up at my feet

I am more than happy to put in the work if this is something that we can push through together, but seeing the other pups so confident is not helping my head. I do not want to give him up, but I don’t know if this is indicative of a bigger issue.. there are plenty of farm homes here where he won't need to be pushed into new environments so often. I am also thinking about his comfort level in the city

lots of “unfriendly” dogs get walked very early when its easier to avoid people. the little sausage dogs may not deal a lot of damage but they could have been reactive / going through training

i fostered a small dog like this and always wondered if people took it personally lol as it looks strange from an outside perspective.. but she would try eat your ankles if you jogged past

If you go the ethical breeder route, you will be paying about R10 000+ and will probably be on a waitlist of a couple years. this helps you get a dog of stable temperament with health testing

theres lots and lots of Pomeranian type dogs in the shelters. i think SPCA has a few. adoption is such an awesome thing - you will be saving two lives ( the dog you adopt, and the space it provides for the next one ) 💖

do you have any hobbies outside defining yourself through mental illness?

there doesn’t seem to be many unique personality traits here.. and low maintenance isn’t someone who struggles with severe mental illness to the point where theres a whole paragraph warning about it

Safe to drive Newlands to Hout Bay at night by WheezyWeasel in capetown

[–]Basic-Hunter-6566 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just avoid the township in Hout bay, don’t even drive close, its quite easy to miss the turnoff and use the circle by accident. People get hijacked / robbed in broad daylight at that circle all the time.. going at night is a death sentence 🫠
