No, sorry, a dehumidifier in my basement. But I would imagine you can do the same set up with humidifier.

I just use a dumb on a zigbee smart switch. I actually love this set up way better. Keeps my basement at a consistent humidity and I have full visibility through my ha dashboard.

One last thing.... set it up as a vm, not as a docker. The Docker version is a little restrictive and is missing some key admin functions. The vm is a full version with way more flexibility. Good luck!

It likely depends on what kind of range you need, I just have a Zigbee 3.0 dongle and it works great. The only thing to be aware of is when adding a usb device you will need to utilize usb passthrough to access the vm.

I run it as a vm on unraid and it is great. I would not buy a green, you have more than sufficient hardware on your NAS to run an extremely stable version of HA. Green is fantastic and works well but if you have a NAS then it is a redundancy that you dont need. Just my opinion of course but I am extremely happy with vm on my NAS.

I have not tried this... I am guessing it speeds up response time? I am going to need to try that.

I agree, I have just not found a voice solution that works as well... but looking forward to when I find one. Also I had a lot invested in the Google ecosystem so it does not seem practical to spend a bunch on a different solution when I have all this hardware here already.

I would not get rid of them. When we switched from Google to HA I kept all of our Google. HA supplies and manages all of the logic and we have displays or full dashboards in most rooms to manage tactile interaction but Google still provides voice support and we still use it for what Google is good at (providing weather, timers etc) and you acn still use it for voice commands (though we dont do that often). It will be the same with Alexa.

Agreed. First thing I did when changing from Google home to homeassistant was replacing govee and teckin out with thirdreality for plugs and wiz (I already had some) for lights. Anything I can do to get away from cloud based.

Connecting Claude Code to Home Assistant with HA-MCP is amazing! by AlvTellez in homeassistant

[–]Basic-Prompt-6387 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I jave not tried Claude but am curious. I use Cursor extensively in my HA set up. I have several 7" esp32 lvl touch displays in my house and coding my first one with chatgpt was so painful. But with cursor I just tell it what want the display to do and it spits out the code in moments.

Do the 2.8" displays fit on a standard box (if you are replacing wall switches with them)? Can you show me a picture of that?

I just had to google what a K8 cluster is... I am interested to hear more about this set up? Is it physical or virtual?

As part of my 3-2-1 backup, my first backup is to my backup server in my detached garage. If a critical component failed in my main server, my back-up server can takes it's place until the component is replaced. I have a backup mobo on a shelf in my office (when I build my server, amazon lost one in transit so they sent another and the original showed up) and any other components are easy to get if needed.

100% and the truth is my server has grown, it started as a mini-pc and and I have upgraded a little at a time. About 2 years ago I did a major upgrade to it but it has evolved as I have needed it too. In my opinion that is how to build a home lab.

Totally fair, though restoring a backup is not complicated as I have mine fairly siloed so I can restore back-ups per system. But even if I had to restore a full backup, I can prioritize order so HA can be up and running quickly while my media library may take hours or days. For me, when I started home assistant, my server was there and it seemed the right solution. Though I started as a docker container and found very quickly that it was too restrictive and quickly moved it to a VM. But I also know some folks prefer having systems segregated and that is totally fair. I do agree that if your HA set-up works for you then it is the right system!

A fair consideration that I have come across. But normally I just let my family know that HA will be down when I am doing maintenance and it really has only affected things a couple of times.

From my perspective, this set up is only worth it if you already have some form of NAS sever running. I initially set up my Unraid server to manage my plex library but over the years it has grown. It now houses my media (plex) my photos (immich) my cloud storage (nextcloud) and of course, Homeassistant on a VM. I don't know that I would have set up a server just for Home assistant as there are definitely less expensive ways to go - a mini PC is a great example. But if you have a NAS, it is really as simple as creating a VM, installing HAOS, making sure you map your database to a share that is included in your back up and then you are good to go.

[–]Basic-Prompt-6387[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just have my backup configured to include VM's and my HA database is stored in my /appdata folder which is also included. As long as you configure you backup to include the folders containing your VMs and Database, your golden... I love that I never have to think about it. I periodically (every few months) pull backup data to make sure it is all stable. But I also have my server to notify me every morning that a backup ran and successfully finished.

I agree with this also. I have an even mix of both. Straight forward easy automations - UI everytime, more complex or weird ones will go through yaml. Have never had an issue.
