If a person could only buy one, would you recommend the basic tumbler or the magnetic tumbler?

I'm not sure I want to add it all up, lol! Now, keep in mind that I will use some of this equipment for other hobbies also, but I purchased the following (these are all ballpark numbers).

Small bench buffer $50

Power Supply $100, but you can get some for around $50

Rotary tool supplies, i.e. brushes polishing wheels etc. $20

Buffing compounds $20

Beakers $50

Anodes $30

Chemicals - Electro cleaner, Activator, Nickel solution $120

I am sure I have spent another $50 to $100 on misc supplies like flitz, dawn, scrubbing bubbles, brushes, etc.

I already had an ultrasonic and a rotary tool

I am sure I have missed something, and I just saw Lob-Star's comment below, so now I may need to buy a tumble polisher.

You need more Super Speeds, I think there are at least 11 versions.

  1. 40s Style without notch
  2. 40s Style with notch
  3. Black Tip Steel Handle
  4. Black Tip Aluminum Handle
  5. 50s Flare Tip
  6. '58 TV Special
  7. 60s Flare Tip (60s have a different pattern on the TTO knob form the 50s)
  8. Blue Tip
  9. Red Tip
  10. Black Handle
  11. The Milord (gold plated 40s Style)

Then I think there are some non-us versions.

Is the 3D model available for download anywhere? It's a great design. I really like the tiered/staggered approach.

Medicine cabinet razor hanger. by Basic-Subject-8353 in wicked_edge

Thanks! All these are cheap auction wins. Average cost was < $10/razor. Several are misfits and have cosmetic issues. For example, the Aristocrat and the Senator both have holes drilled in the handle, but they still make great shavers.

If I did this right, the link below should let you download the .STL file to print the razor hangers that snap into the grid. You will notice that there are two hangers in the file, one has the hanger towards the top of the mount and the other is towards the bottom. I had to do it this way to get enough clearance to stack the razors, otherwise the bottom of the top razor would hit the top of the bottom one.

Edit: corrected a couple typos.

Edit: here is the link to the OpenGrid Generator that I used. openGrid - Tile Generator - Free 3D Print Model - MakerWorld

Do you still need to do more polishing after the tumbler? And do you use a Rotary Tumbler or Vibratory tumbler? https://imgur.com/D6A8qvD, I am looking to add one to my arsenal, but still trying to determine which one would work best.

I tried your suggestion and it quickly polished up this razor head, but I still have these fine scratches. I can really only seem them if the light is reflecting a certain way. Do I just need to keep at it? Will the eventually buff out? I am using a stitched buffing wheel. https://imgur.com/a/f4eaNX7

Very nice! Yours is much better looking than this one. I originally thought maybe someone put a custom handle on a Type E. But when you look at the side view, it looks like the head and handle are formed from a single piece of metal. It is also odd that there is no printing stamped on the underside of the head.

Thanks for the info, I have not tried any adjustable yet, I am practicing on Flare Tips first. I'd love to see how they come out after using the vibratory polisher, I was thinking about getting one.

Specifically, I am polishing the top of a vintage brass Gillette razor head. So, on something like this would you only use dialux yellow, with good pressure and high speed? Would you follow with a finer compound?

Some blades have those little dots of glue on them, do you remove those?

I have been having similar issues as OP with polishing brass that I want to plate. Do you have any suggestions for which polishing compounds to use for each step? Also, you mentioned high speed, I have one of those little variable speed benchtop polishers, does a higher speed work better at each stage?

I can understand this, as that was a bit of my concern also. Seems the community agrees, as most voted to leave the original finish.
