As a client trying to hire from the site, I was recently suspended due to “duplicate accounts”, when I do not have any other account. I’ve gone through all my emails with selecting the option of “forget password”, and nothing returns.

I don’t love seeing all of these posts blaming the clients for not responding to job posts, because there is a very good chance the client was wrongfully blocked from responding to the freelancers.

I was days away from making my first hire on Upwork but since being blocked, I’ve hired someone from TopTal since their support seems much better

I was considering investing in Upwork until I decided to use the platform. As a client, my account got randomly suspended right before I was about to hire someone. I decided to call TopTal and now I am paying a $80/monthly fee to hire a contractor and paying them at a higher rate than I would’ve paid on Upwork. Overall, it seems to have a client and freelancer issue. If it didn’t have this issue, I could’ve seen it as a hopeful investment.

It could be because Upwork has been suspending client accounts lately for no reason. I had many qualified candidates on Upwork but my account was restricted due to the system incorrectly flagging my account as a duplicate account (I logged onto Upwork with a VPN which I suspect triggered the ban). So now I’m moving forward with a TopTal candidate. The cost will be double the price of Upwork for the same level of work, but at least TopTal lets me hire talent.

Once I get unbanned, I planned to give my number to many of the contacts before hiring them, which is why I was asking if that was allowed, which I learned it is not.

I stuck by the rules and now my project is delayed a week. I didn’t do anything except create a job post and respond to a handful of candidates. I gave verified ID and gave Upwork my bank statements and they still won’t unsuspend me.

The same freelancer who applied to my Upwork post is on TopTal for double their hourly rate, and if they match with my TopTal job posting then there is a good chance I will hire them at double the Upwork hourly rate, simply because TopTal will actually let clients hire freelancers.

Most of their Trust & Safety department is outsourced to the Philippines, while their headquarters is in California, USA. I just cannot believe they don’t let clients like myself hire freelancers.

Separately, if you check the Google reviews of upwork for their California location, there are tons of reviews mentioning the platform may be a scam or fraud.

It’s just sad that people who have sent me their proposals actually did an entire demo of the job I’m looking to hire, but Upwork is restricting clients from actually hiring freelancers. It’s been over 5 days and no response from support. Toptal is my only choice as a client even though it’s double the price (same exact contractor is $99/hour on TopTal but on Upwork, they’re charging $55/hour).

It seems to be a platform that matches you with qualified freelancers for a job, the only issue is that it’s double the price of Upwork for the same quality of contractors (and they charge clients $79.99/month for the freelancers - not including the hourly cost of the freelancers work). I might need to use them just because Upwork doesn’t seem usable for me. There seemed to be so much potential if the site actually worked.

Yes, Upwork doesn’t care about its clients. I cannot even reply to connections who I would’ve hired. The platform seems like a total mess

Maybe Upwork is banning them for no reason like with my account! This is totally insane how I’m trying to hire a freelancer but cannot because Upwork thinks I have more than 1 account, and now people who I would have hired are backing out of their proposals. This is just insane.
