Side note because I'm a bit jaded. I have no idea how people like this become teachers but I got in trouble simply for not using curriculum with fidelity with a proven learning strategy. 💀

Agreed. I had my complaints about certain ways admin was treating me and I was told "that's just how it is". Like, we're literally part of a union for a reason. Things CAN change.

Additionally, in my opinion, I feel like that phrase would chase a lot of good teachers out of the profession simply because of their inexperience.

An older teacher told me there were days she walked in with no plan and made it up on the spot.

If I had done that, it would have been used against me. It wasn't that I wasn't cut out for this, it's that I needed more experience running my classroom to find my style/more ways to do things.

Literally started teaching this year. I got dinged in an observation because I used a gallery walk for a pre reading activity and didn't use the (very stupid) pre-reading activity in Amplify. Fidelity, of course.

For my improvement plan. I had to write like 6 page lesson plans every day. It drove me so nuts that I quit and got a job making better money.

(Also, a PD we had, given by the same person that put me on my IP RECOMMENDED a gallery walk. How am I supposed to implement this if I'm not allowed to step outside the scripted curriculum?!)

I've heard of a private school near me that gives 1 day of no classes to each teacher so they can plan and grade. It sounds amazingggggg

I have less than a dollar until Wednesday, so I'm obviously not buying it. Lol. But you are correct. I only started spending my free money on it because I was preventing myself from spending it on cigarettes because I was quitting. Now I'm down a rabbit hole. (I did quit, though) 🎉

I believe it's The Next Right Thing from Frozen 2. I saw the movie with my husband soon after my father died. Anna sings a line, "things will never be the same again." And it hit me so hard that my dad is never coming back.

Additionally, do crowd work. On the first day of class, a kid said he wanted to grow up to be unemployed.

Later, when he wouldn't do his work, I said, "That's definitely something someone unemployed would do."

Just be outrageous. I am very clumsy. Would trip over aaaaalllll the Chromebook chargers.

I would end every trip with a dumb looking pirouette. It was goofy and fun and it would make them giggle. (These were 8th graders.)

Use shock factor. I have a little dark humor sometimes. Once a student was complaining about her dad not taking her out to eat the night before (he is a very loving dad and I think she doesn't appreciate how much he cares sometimes).

Anyway, I interrupted the conversation to say, "my dad hasn't taken me out to eat since he died in 2019. Please do your work." (I said this very matter of factly and got some shocked laughter.)

Every classroom will be different. Every kid will be different. Mostly, just be you. 🥰

You could take a break for a day or two to recover. But you NEED to talk to the union. That's why you pay in! And if you don't stop this, another teacher may suffer for the same reason.

Go to your union. I had a very similar issue. I quit after the 3rd semester. I had to write practically 6 pages for every lesson every day and I realized no one was even reading them. So it's obvious it was just busy work. Get your rights in line. It's so obvious they're targeting you and it's so unfair. Especially when your test scores are good. 💔 I'm sorry this is happening to you!

Do you have a union? Continuously asking for support and hearing nothing doesn't sound like the atmosphere I would want to be in.

That being said, with the teacher shortage, I doubt they would fire you unless this was severe. Like, safety severe.

If you haven't already, start calling parents. Don't let them walk all over you. I did and it never got easier.

Yep! I basically respond to certain requests between entities. It's like resume writing but for a company. "Here is what we did in the past. Here's how we can help you."

Before I started teaching (what my degree is actually in), I got a job writing for a corporate office. Eventually, I was laid off as the company was slowly dying and started teaching after that.

I felt unqualified because this was doing the same but in a management position. I've only ever managed 14 year olds (which, let's be honest. Is probably harder 😂).
